OPERATION WATCH-OUT

January is National Blood Donor MonthGive Blood Today, Boost Community

Supply and Help Save Lives!New York Blood Center

(NYBC) and its divisions in Man-hattan, Long Island, Hudson Val-ley, Brooklyn/Staten Island, andNew Jersey call upon the com-munity to please donate blood, inrecognition of National BloodDonor Month, and to help savelives.

Approximately every two sec-onds, someone needs blood. Fourmillion Americans would dieeach year without it, and the onlyplace to get this precious resourceis from volunteer blood donors.Every day in the U.S., approxi-mately 39,000 units of blood areneeded in hospitals and emer-gency treatment facilities for pa-tients with cancer and other dis-eases, for organ transplant re-cipients, and to help save thelives of accident victims.

Fewer than 5 percent ofhealthy Americans eligible todonate blood actually donate eachyear. In New York, only 2%actually donate. Several donorsaiming to change those statistics

include: Alan Singer of Edison,NJ has given blood regularly for28 years, and recently introducedhis daughter, Zahava, to the self-less act of giving blood by ac-companying her to her very firstblood donation. Alan often givesblood in Manhattan, near his placeof work.

Elliot Vanacour of Marlboro,NJ, a New York City transit em-ployee and blood donor of 28years, recently celebrated his200th career blood donation atNew York Blood Services’ OneNew York Plaza Donor Center.

Albert Fischer ofMassapequa, NY, recently do-nated his 320th pint of wholeblood, a total of 40 gallons. Albertoften gives blood with the GoldenDonors, a group of dedicatedvolunteer retirees.

Blood is traditionally in shortsupply during the winter monthsdue to the holidays, travel sched-ules, inclement weather and ill-ness. January, in particular, canbe a difficult month for blood

centers to collect blood dona-tions, as approximately 15% ofregional blood collection comesfrom high schools and colleges, many of which have winter re-cess this month.

Once donated, blood can beseparated into several compo-nents including red blood cells, platelets and plasma. A singleblood donation can help save thelives of up to three people.

People can donate a pint ofblood every 56 days. An adult ofaverage weight has about 10 to12 units of blood, so one pint iseasy to spare. You may get itback someday, as one out of threepeople will need a life-savingblood transfusion in his or herlifetime.

NYBC thanks every indi-vidual blood donor and the widevariety of organizations that spon-sor blood drives throughout thewinter season.

To donate blood, please call:Toll Free: 1-800-933-2566

I have money to invest. Where do I begin?Investing is the first step toward building a more financially secure future - congratulations on

being ready to take that step. As you’re probably all too aware, investing can also be intimidating, especially when you’ve never done it before. But like anything else, it’s much simpler if you have aplan in place.

Identify Goals(The first thing you want to do is define your goals. Do you want to buy a new home?Pay for a child’s education? Or are you simply looking for long-term savings? Once you have yourgoals defined, you’ll know how much you need, when you need it, and you should be able to makebetter decisions about what investment options are best for you.

Evaluate Needs(But before you develop an investing strategy, you should evaluate your currentfinancial picture. Do you have a clear picture of your current expenses and where your money isgoing? Are you carrying a lot of credit card debt? Do you have an emergency reserve with at least threemonths of income in savings? Because investing requires putting money away for the long-term, it’simportant that you have your immediate needs covered.

The Big Picture(At Edward Jones, we’re committed to looking out for your best interests andhelping you develop an investment plan that makes sense for you. We believe the smartest way is toput money into quality investments that have solid track records to help ride out the ups and downsof the market without sacrificing your long-term goals.

Get Started(To learn how Edward Jones can help prioritize your financial needs and turn them intomeasurable goals, contact your local financial advisor Vincent Renda. He’ll talk to you one-on-oneand provide a complimentary portfolio review, a service that can help identify and prioritize yourfinancial goals and track your progress toward achieving them.

Vincent can be reached at 718-361-1306 and his office is located at 47-01 Queens Blvd. Suite 203Sunnyside NY 11104. (See Ad Page 7)

Surveillance cameras are aconstructive tool to any criminalinvestigation and follow-up. Theinstallation, maintenance andproper utilization of surveillancesystems provides an added layerof safety and security to residentsand businesses. Images capturedby surveillance systems oftenprovide valuable leads and criti-cal information to investigators. The Police Department notes thatthere are many such surveillancesystems currently being utilizedthroughout Queens North. To fa-cilitate access to these cameras,Patrol Borough Queens North isestablishing a database of these

surveillance systems. As a meansof identifying local camera sys-tems, Business Improvement Dis-tricts are invited to distribute andcollect surveillance system factsheets. These sheets may be for-warded to the Patrol BoroughQueens North Community Af-fairs Supervisor Sergeant

Everoski or the Borough CrimePrevention Officer Gumpel at fax# (718) 520-1734 for inclusion inthe Borough’s camera system da-tabase.

such a dressing gown?” we, too, have been noticing that his bath-robe is ridiculous. But as the evi-dence mounts in one direction, and the victim decently offers toforget about it if he gets his moneyback, our sympathies for the up-per class characters fade.Galsworthy’s theme isthat loyalty to one’s own, mixed with an inabilityto draw the line in howfar we take that loyalty, takes a wrecking ball towhat we wish to pre-serve. As a nation, werecoiled with shamewhen the photographswere shown of the hor-rors of Abu Ghraib, judging harshly, but fewof us experience first-hand the necessary loy-alty unto death withwhich bands of brothersare instilled. Often weall “stick together” withour own when the lightof day later shows us tobe wrong and our livesin rubble around us. Theplay is a not a dull lec-ture about our failings,or an indictment againstthe upper class, but avery entertaining andundeniable exposure ofa quality all of us treasure inourselves, our loyalty to eachother and what we consider mostvaluable, a Tony Soprano storyin reverse, a moral code whichsociety’s elite behave like thugs. As Margaret, the cynical flapperadventuress, played with verveby Amelia Randolph Campbell, asks about Jews, “They all sticktogether; why shouldn’t we? It’sin the blood. Open your jugular, and see if you haven’t got it.”Then speaking apparently forGalsworthy himself, she asks,“Prejudices – or are they loyal-ties? Chris-cross. We all cut eachother’s throats from the best ofmotives. Even the accused be-comes more sympathetic as he isforced to defend himself by hissociety friends for their ownhonor, though most know thetruth. a fault, and whose devotion even-tually brings about a sort of con-version in the excitement junkieaccused; both he and his accuserby the play’s end manage a kindof grace. The true-blue wife andher husband’s society attorney,

acted beautifully by Evan Th-ompson, are characters alsodriven by loyalty, but theirs areto the love and the law, respec-tively. Director Geierπs inspiredmulti-role casting works espe-cially well with Thompson whois first on stage as the punctiliousbutler. The butler, despite hisservile station, enacted quite hu-morously, exhibits no love lostwith the Jewish accuser, show-ing Galsworthy does not singleout only the elite as prejudiced.Jaike Foley-Schultz portrays aquavering obedient valet and alsoa stuttering, fey gentleman togood effect. Geier wittily hasboth the butler and valet, wheninterrogated by the police, replylike army recruits, standing atattention, in a funny turn. Alsowell acted is Alfred Gingoldπs asmilitary family friend whosecold-blooded damage control in-forms the entire sequence of

events. Sunnyside’s own CeliaMontgomery is well cast as LadyWinsor, whose sexual teasing andpeaches and cream beauty hidethe ugly society prejudice thatincreasingly peeks through. Thecostumes were unexpectedly fine

in this production, andthe care and attentionto such small details ona limited budget revealthe passion for excel-lence shown by direc-tor Geier. The play con-tains some inside light-hearted references suchthe revered lawyer de-scribed as turningdown a knighthood, asGalsworthy himselfdid. Galsworthy wasawarded the NobelPrize for literature in1937. Also mentionedis a reference to theDreyfus affair, whichhad previously rockedEurope with its vilifi-cation of a Jewish mili-tary officer.Galsworthy was amember of the upperclasses himself and onecan see why he attainedsuccess. He is not filledwith self-loathing forthe upper classes; he

understands how their faults areuniversal in different guises. Thisauthor enjoyed the $6 vodka tonicat intermission at LICπs CassinoRestaurant, now a lively bar, which is quite easy to get to onthe #7 and had free parking after7pm right out front. Producer/director Sofia Landon Geier hasdone the theater world a serviceby the exhumation of a damngood script which had been un-discovered since its Broadwaysmash run in 1922. ComposerGeorge Andoniadis’ evocativeoriginal music was perfect. Star-tlingly good was the casting bySunnysider Kimberly Graham asproven in the unexpectedly fineensemble cast.

City and State Tax FormsAvailable at Assemblyman

Gianaris’ OfficeAssemblyman Michael Gianaris (D-Queens) has ensured that city and state tax

forms will be locally available to those who would like to pick them up at his office at21-77 31st Street in Astoria. Among the forms available are the New York City SchoolTax Credit (NYC210) form and the Claim for Real Property Tax Credit for Homeownersand Renters (IT214).

“While filing taxes electronically is very efficient, not everyone has online accessor familiarity with the internet,” said Assemblyman Michael Gianaris. “I’m happy toprovide a neighborhood location where these forms are readily available to those whoneed them.”

New York State stopped mailing tax forms in 2007, encouraging people to fileonline. Paper forms are often used by older Americans and those who do not haveaccess to computers.

Tax forms available at Assemblyman Gianaris’ Office: IT1099R, IT150, IT201,IT201ATT, IT203, IT203ATT, IT203B, IT213, IT214, IT215, IT216, IT272, NYC210.Please note: Tax forms and information booklets are available at AssemblymanGianaris’ office, but tax preparation services must be sought elsewhere.
