They remind us all to be nicer toeach other in this beautiful season. Thankyou, Jimmy!

This year, Skillman merchants organizedthemselves and called their group, “TheSkillman Project.” They helped promotethis event among other worthy activitiesduring the year, such as opening their heartsand doors to help the Marine Corps withtheir Toys for Tots Program.

Other hard working friends in thelighting’s first two years include the inde-fatigable Tim Chen of Quaint Restaurant,Dan Glasser of Stray Vintage, attorney IraGreenberg, and Rigoberto Cardoso of ProntoCar Service. Patricia Dorfman and DanGlasser also “blackmailed” Remembers filmproducers, who donated money last yearand Pat designed the red promotional posterused this year and last. Gary and CatherineO’Neil pitched in as well as Becky Barker

Skillman Lights In Third Yearwho stepped up when she was president lastyear - she and Dan worked hand in hand.Lily Gavin got the electric work done byPetrocelli Electric, Vantage Properties madea donation, and, as always, AssemblywomanCathy Nolan gave her support.

This year, Jimmy specifically gavecredit to the Skillman Project, SwainWeiner and Lily Gavin for their help.Bless them one and all! Everyone en-joyed the beautiful caroling from thechildren of PS 150 and PS11. Neighborsmet neighbors they had not seen sincelast year, and old friends rekindled friend-ships. If you like the lights and thisevent, tell Jimmy and his staff andPLEASE PATRONIZE and thank theChamber members and contributors! Why roam? Shop at home! Congratu-lations to all for your hard work that paidoff, beautifully.

Dear Editor,The Food Pantry of St. Raphael

Church (the parish I pastor) is seri-ously misrepresented in two Lettersto the Editor that appear in the Nov.30th issue of the Woodside Herald.

Both letters were written bythe same individual using with fic-titious names. She is actuallyPatricia Magda (aka PatriciaDunbar). The surnames she uses inthe letters tweak her own surnames, while the first names she uses dothe same with her daughters’names. She wants to give the im-pression of a pattern of complaints.

Ms. Magda is literally bitingthe hand that feeds her. She hasbeen consistently and generouslyhelped by St. Raphael’s (and bySt. Teresa’s) Food Pantries, as wellas by individual parishioners here. Moreover, when her estrangedhusband died about three years ago, this church assisted her with thecosts of the funeral service.

St. Raphael’s Food Pantry cur-rently feeds about 1700 homelessand food-insecure individuals eachmonth, and receives exemplarygrades in all inspections of its ser-vices and operations. Its effective

outreach is so widely recognizedin the community that, after Hurri-cane Sandy, it was immediatelyrecruited by Catholic Charities asa resource for storm victims. Lastweek, the American Red Cross alsosought the Pantry’s assistance inthis regard.

Ms. Magda mentions the mere$10 gift card that Pantry clientsreceived at Thanksgiving time. Please realize that we are talkingabout thousands of dollars worth ofsuch $10 cards, all underwritten bythe generosity of St. Raphael pa-rishioners. We would have pre-ferred to distribute the $20 cardswe did last year, but the increasedclientele, plus the storm impact andthe economy, stretched limited re-sources that thin. In addition to thecard, each client also received alarger-than-usual amount of food.

I want to assure all area resi-dents who know about, help or usethe Pantry that every item of do-nated food, whether left in the foodbaskets in church or collectedthrough community support, is dis-tributed justly to needy persons, and is not stolen by Pantry work-ers or rerouted, in Ms. Magda’swords, to “favorite clients”. Thesefalse accusations dispirit our help-ers, all of whom are dedicated, unpaid volunteers.

I invite you and your readers tostop by to see the Food Pantry inoperation, speak with the coordina-tor and volunteers (especially theones who assist Ms. Magda in hervisits), and perhaps even witnessfirsthand people receiving a lot morethan the “rice and beans” mentioned.

Those who know the letter-writer are not surprised by herzingers. However, the members ofSt. Raphael parish, who have sac-rificed extensively over the yearsto offer the Food Pantry to needypersons in the neighborhood, aresurprised that more fact-checkingdid not precede the publication ofher vilifying comments. Most im-portantly, we hope this will nothappen again.

Thank you for your invitationto voice these matters in theWoodside Herald.

-Father Jerry Jecewiz

Dear Editor,I write this letter in response to

the woman who wrote the ‘letter tothe editor’ on Nov. 30th, about theFOOD PANTRY, to the peoplewho volunteer and to the peoplewho find the necessity to go. Icommend all the volunteers thatare gracious and care about theircommunity, as they do the bestwith what they are given and arefair on how they distribute thatwish they receive.

Lets talk Turkey: The food pan-try at St. Theresa’s receives but somany Turkey’s - not enough forthe whole community, so they de-cided to allow the large families toreceive the turkeys. The well-dressed man in your letter - hereceived a turkey because he has alarge family and NO, he did notreceive any other turkeys at anyother pantries… I know this be-cause he’s my food pantry buddy. We always go early to be the firstto leave and not because we get

first pick, but because what theygive us is no different from the lastperson to receive. St. Raphael didgive out a $10.00 Foodtown giftcard. “We are sorry we don’t havemore to give you and hope thishelps,” is what we were told whenwe received the gift card. Does thishelp? Yes it does, especially forthose who are barely making endsmeet. We go to the food pantriesbecause of necessity. A lot of thesefamilies have lost jobs and needthe extra help and are grateful forwhat they receive. Unlike the per-son who complained about whatshe didn’t get: i.e. a turkey andreceiving the same old vegetable. To the writer of this letter, I sayNEVER LOOK A GIFT HORSEIN THE MOUTH. And if you aretired of what you receive, thendon’t utilize the food pantries. Yourletter was not fair to the volunteers. So to them ‘Thank you’ for doingwhat you do and GOD BLESS.

Thank You,Lydia Caraballo
