Page 2: WOODSIDE HIGH SCHOOL TASK GRID 3: YEAR 9

Who said—“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand, Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed; And on the pedestal, these words appear: My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings; Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair! Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away.” The poem is about a traveller who is telling someone about a statue he

saw of a great king called Ozymandias. The statue is now broken and over time his head has fallen down but the words of power are still written on the pedestal near his feet.

Write a paragraph answering the following question: How does the writer present power in the poem? What: Think about how power is lost using a quote. How: select a method the author uses and show its effect. Why: think about why Shelley may have written Ozymandias to show that

power is never forever.

Task 2:

Use the above poem as inspiration and write your own poem about a powerful person who lost their power, eg. Hitler, Stalin etc.

Task 3: Read for 30 mins a day.

Jewellery Design Elective

Task 1

Create a floor plan for a physical jewellery shop you could open in London.

You need to think about the layout of the shop- what sections/different rooms would you have? E.g. recycled section, unisex section, section inspired by nature… How big would they be and how would they be laid out? You should annotate to show details e.g. where mirrors, tables, shop fittings would go… and what styles/themes/colours you would choose to decorate. Write a description of your shop underneath your floor plan, explaining what it would be like. You can use Google to help you get some ideas! You can print out images to glue into your book to show your ideas more clearly if you have printer access.

Explain where your shop would go in London (do some research and think about your target audience e.g. a trendy shop in Shoreditch, a high street shop on Oxford street, a quaint pop-up shop in a park, or an expensive shop in the jewellery district etc…)

Additional task: Create an attractive and bold poster promoting the grand opening of your shop. It needs an address/place, date, time, shop name and details of the opening event. E.g. you could run a workshop for kids and offer champagne to parents.

Example floor plan:

If you have internet access, watch ‘Mary Portas, Queen of Shops’

You should aim to do 2 hours of elective work per week.

Each task should take you roughly 2 hours.

Page 28: WOODSIDE HIGH SCHOOL TASK GRID 3: YEAR 9

on YouTube to give you some shop-keeper inspiration!

Task 2

Write an article for a online fashion blog and printed magazine, explaining why jewellery and accessories form an important part of many people’s identity. You might want to interview a friend or family member, or Google celebrities famous for their statement accessories to give examples.

You could talk about the following themes:

● Sentimental jewellery/accessories e.g. passed down or inherited from older family members

● Romantic e.g. engagement rings ● Eccentric styles- showing personality ● DIY, homemade or crafted yourself ● Following fashion trends ● Being inspired by a particular decade e.g. 60s ● Familiarity, comfort ● Uniform or status e.g. badges, pins ● To show a political stance ● Jewellery/accessories specific to a culture or background ● Religious or social reasons ● To enhance or hide part of a person

Talk about as much as you can. Consider your own identity too, and why you may or may not choose to wear certain things. Your piece of writing should take up roughly one whole lined A4 sheet. (one page in your book).

Page 29: WOODSIDE HIGH SCHOOL TASK GRID 3: YEAR 9
