Paul Fennell, La Mer July 29 - August 2 Turning Elegant & Decorative Hollow Forms J. Paul Fennell SKILL LEVEL: II - IV CONCEPT: Ready to expand your own expres- sive vocabulary? Learn how to turn elegant hollow forms and embellish them with new and creative decorative techniques. We focus on developing a sense of how subtle changes in the vessel’s line, volume and proportion can dramatically alter elements of our work. Emphasis is on enhancing our designs through texturing, carving and piercing. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Turning and embellishing hollow forms in wood. Hollowing techniques, design and layout techniques for texturing, carving and piercing. Creating basket weave designs, patterns and incised carving on vessel surfaces. Techniques to gauge wall thickness appropriate for carving and piercing. ACTIVITIES: Introduction and short demonstra- tions. Embellishment processes and specific tool uses. We explore many design ideas, concepts and techniques, then apply those to our daily work. Open forums and class discus- sions of daily accomplishments at the end of each day. FACULTY: J. Paul Fennell has been turning wood for over 40 years. His work resides in many private collections and several museums, including the Smithsonian, Museum of Arts and Design, Detroit Institute of Arts, and the Cincinnati Art Museum. Workshops range from traditional woodturning to innovative approaches in contemporary art and design. If you want to advance your skills and expand your creative imagination, then we have a workshop for you. The Pryor Turning Studio is outfitted with nine workstations, each equipped with a lathe and set of tools. WOODTURNING SKILL LEVELS: Open to all – Students of any skill and knowledge level. Level I – Students are new to woodturning and have no formal training. Level II – Students have a basic understanding of fundamental turning tools and techniques and are comfortable using and sharpening bowl gouges and spindle gouges. Level III – Students have significant turning experience using both green and kiln-dried lumber. Students are capable of selecting wood, able to use and sharpen gouges, and familiar with basic principles of 3-D design. Students have some formal technical training in woodturning and have a portfolio of their artwork. Level IV – Students have advanced skill and knowledge of woodturning. Students are highly motivated, and have multiple portfolios of their artwork. SKILL LEVEL: II - IV
