On 31st July Woolgoolga High School staff and students
had the pleasure of the company of John Coutis, motiva-
tional speaker and amazing human, who shared some of
his stories and “life lessons” with the audience. John is
one of the most sought-after motivational speakers in the
world and has travelled the globe inspiring others on how
to better live their lives.
The feedback received from staff and students was very
positive. We hope everyone took something valuable from
this experience. John’s words of wisdom will hopefully be
remembered for a long time to come. It was an excellent
reminder for all of us to believe in ourselves, be responsi-
ble bystanders if we witness bullying, and "treat people
the way we wish to be treated" at all times.

Good luck to all of our Year 12 students as they sit their Trial HSC Exams over the next two
weeks. I am certain they are all ready given the number of students staying back after and before
school studying.
A reminder that our P&C will meet this Tuesday 21/8/18 in the staff common room at 6.30pm.
John Coutis engaged the whole school with his interactive presentation. There was a large amount
of positive feedback from both students and staff. He is an amazing person. Thank you to Mrs Do-
rahy for organising the event.
The Year 10 snow trip was an excellent excursion. Thanks to staff for attending and especially the
Year 10 Adviser, Mr Pursch. Some great photos later in this newsletter.
Sport once again is showcased in this newsletter. Congratulations to all competitors from such a
variety of sports.
The Woolgoolga Rotary Club once again passes on its thank you to our students for giving up their
time to help at the Rotary Auctions. Thanks also to Mrs Hart.
I have included a copy of our brochure that highlights our school to international students from
around the globe. Last week I attended the International Student Conference in Sydney. Our
school was highlighted to a large audience of teachers from across the state as a great example of
a school showcasing our education across the globe. Many presenters commented on Woolgoolga
High School’s educational programs, but I think the beaches and the kangaroos also helped.
Last week our Director of Learning and Leadership, Meghanne Wellard attended our school and
we organised a morning tea for our newly arrived ten international students. The students are from
Europe and their countries of origin include Italy, Germany, Norway, Finland and Switzerland. It is
so important that access to this program helps give our students at Woolgoolga High School a truly
international perspective to education and an appreciation of other cultures.
Until next time

Safety First
Parents, carers and students are
reminded not to use the staff car
park for dropping off or picking up
their children, unless using the
disabled parking bays.
Our car park is very congested,
especially on rainy days directly
before school begins and after
school finishes. Parking is availa-
ble at the front of the school for
safety and a covered walkway for
students’ convenience leads from
the bus bay into the grounds.

John’s spine and legs had not formed properly when he was born. John’s parents were told that he
would not survive. He certainly proved the doctors wrong and has had further significant health
scares later in life, which he has overcome as well. John has not let his disability stop him from
living life to the fullest. He shared photos of himself as a happy child and more recent photos of him
"diving in" to scuba diving and "going fishing" where he caught and released an amazing fish. His
catchphrase “If I can, You can” was clearly evident in these images.
John Coutis spoke to Mrs Dorahy after the event and said he would like to return to Woolgoolga
sometime in the future to speak to parents and community members. He was very impressed with
our beautiful little town and spoke highly in his social media videos about Woolgoolga’s local
accommodation and eateries. I am sure there are many people interested in hearing his incredible
story in the future. We will let the community know if and when he will return to our area. Thanks
John Coutis for demonstrating the power of positive thinking, and inspiring hope for the future.

On Wednesday, 7th August the Woolgoolga High School Year 7 & 8 Debating Team went against
two Orara High School teams of the same year group. The topics for the first and second debate
were “We should ban tobacco in Australia” and School canteens should only sell Australian food”
respectively. Our team was negative for both topics and won both debates. The adjudicator gave
both teams invaluable debating advice and awarded three people with a “best speaker” certificate
(one of the Orara debaters, Quinn Watson and Melissa Bidlingmaier), however, all of the
members of the Woogoolga debating team played their assigned roles well as well as working
brilliantly together as a team, making it an enjoyable experience. Bring on the next debate!

Once a fortnight several Year 7 volunteers
are helping to clean up the playground.
These students are working to minimise
the amount of plastic litter that works its
way into the ocean each day. Well done to
Isaac Hay, Tahlia Lonsdale, Zavia King
and Justin Costello. Hopefully in the future
this clean up the school initiative can grow
and expand.
Thank you from Mr Lloyd!

local papers, school newsletters, and the annual report and on our
school website.

please notify the school in writing.

The boys rocked up to the stadium and had
some training at the back courts. Around
10.30am we had our practice game against
Grafton. We convincingly defeated them
43-16, Woopi’s way of giving the team some
morale and excitement. We sat down, had
lunch then at 1.00pm played a game
against Orara which we unfortunately lost
because they had a better team and were
so connected. The final score was 54-27.

Helping Learner Drivers Become Safer Drivers
Workshop Overview:
Parents and supervisors play a vital role in providing young drivers the experience they need to be
safe on the roads. The Helping Learner Drivers Become Safer Drivers workshop has been devel-
oped to help them teach with confidence so they can help learner drivers be safe on the road. The
free two hour workshop includes information about license conditions for Learner and P plate
drivers, tips for using the learner driver log book and the importance of providing constructive feed-
back. The course also reinforces the important role families play in providing ongoing support for
young motorists in their early years of driving. Courses will be held on:
Grafton October 29 : Coffs Harbour October 30 : Bellingen October 31
