THE passion for antiqueChinese artefacts is unabatedto the delight of auctioneerswho often find their cautiousestimates ignored by the

specialist buyers competing for finequality items.

In several sections of the recent

antiques and fine art sale atBrightwells Easters Court inLeominster, Chinese porcelain,carvings and metalwork took some ofthe best prices.

An impressive pair of antique blueand white urns with covers anddecorated with trees and branches soldfor 3,400. It was blue and white waresof this type that attracted the followersof William Morris in the 19th centuryand led to the establishment of severalOriental warehouses that importedChinese antiquities for middle classhomes adding to the porcelain that hadbeen purchased by the owners ofgrander houses in the 18th century.

Consequently, Chinese ceramics areoften found in family houses whereeven damaged pieces are now re-examined in the hope of discoveringsomething rare and precious.

A group of four carved Chinesehardwood panels, the low reliefdecoration showing birds amongfanciful trees, made 1,800. while a pairof carved hardwood table screens withfretted borders went at 720.

The greatest surprise of the sale wasan African stool-like headrest withinlaid beadwork decoration that ledthe ethnic section selling for 2,600.

A long-bow, probably of Indian originwith painted decoration made 330,while a large rocking chair in the formof a fierce seated warrior and apotential focus of attention for anyshop window or exhibition stand, soldfor 170.

The highlights of the Europeanfurniture section included an elegantRegency library table with oyster typeveneers and unusual fitted drawers toboth sides that made 3,000.

The simple lines and light colour of apolished pine housekeepers cupboardwith arched panelled doors and nineuseful drawers appealed to currenttaste and sold for 1,300 and a set ofeight mahogany dining chairs withcarved cabriole front supports made680.

A Victorian grained dresser withglazed and panelled doors abovedrawers and cupboards went for 1,250and a walnut and oak side table inWilliamand Mary style achieved 900.An 18th century continental chest ofthree drawers, the top surface anddrawer fronts inlaid with griffons andcherubs, was purchased for 1,950,

while an English-made davenportmade 500.

In contrast, a pair of Le Corbusier-style black leather sofas with chromeframes and with a matching chromeand glass coffee table made 800 and aConway Stewart fountain pen glazed

shop display case sold above itsestimate for a good 720.

A pair of oil on canvas town scenesof Abbeville and Mulhouse in Alsace,France, signed by Henri Schafer,attracted several potential buyers andsold for 780.

An oil on canvas entitled The Dale,dated 1809 and painted by BenjaminBaker of Bath, Somerset, made 800,while an unframed Victorian oil of anunusually chubby and healthy lookinginfant holding an applesold for 380.

A small watercolour, The CooksAssistantcommissioned by thepublisher WR Chambers and obviously

destined to illustrate an Edwardiangirls book sold for 560 while asketchbook of botanical watercoloursmade 260.

A Royal Worcester vase signed byJames Stinton and painted with hischaracteristic highland cattle sold foran expected 880, a pair of Grainger &Co. Worcester two- handled vasespainted with scenes of Malvern andWorcester, 600; a Royal WorcesterMathon hop part dinner service, 320; atwo-handled mug, signed E Townsend,300 and a similar mug painted withfish, 200.

Objets dart included a 19th centuryoctagonal Barbados type sailorsvalentine worked in characteristiccoloured shells as a pair in a hingedcase which reached 1,000 and severalgroups of Mauchlinware that sold forbetween 120 and 200.

A 19th century steel corkscrew with aturned bone handle made 180, while anovelty corkscrew in the form of awomans legs with striped stockings

and high heeled shoes sold for 160. Apapier- mache card case painted with alandscape and contained in a very rareJennens & Bettridge makers box was agood buy at 200, while a spiritdecanter in the form of a barrel on awheeled base sold for 350.

Diamonds again attracted somesatisfactory prices, a tanzanite anddiamond three-stone ring selling for1,500 and a diamond line bracelet with55 flexible links achieving 2,500. Adramatic diamond encrusted bangle,the front pave set with rose and yellowdiamonds to form a stylised sunburstmade 1,200.
