Jumping Pixies

Equal numbers of pixies and reindeer face each other. (In this example 3 of each).

They have to get to the opposite side of the grid.They can jump over one of the opposing side into an empty space,

or slide into an empty space next to them.They can move in no other way.

Investigate the least number of moves it takes to swap sides.

Below are some counters and gridsyou can cut out that may help

in this investigation.


Push Pixie

Each counter can move forwards or backwards any number of spaces.The counter cannot go off the board or through an opponents

counter (so may only move next to it).Decide who moves first, then take turns to move.

The first person who cannot move loses.

What method will always win? Do you need to go first or second?

Does this strategy change when the number of squares on the gird changes?

Does this strategy change when the number of counterson the gird increases to 3 or 4

(ie the width of the grid would increase to 3 or 4)?

Get Santa Down the ChimneyCopy the picture onto card or squared paper

and cut out the squares.Don’t throw away the outer part as you will use it as a frame.

Put the squares back into the frame and removethe black square (chimney).

By sliding the squares into the empty spacesget Santa into the chimney.

You are not allowed to move squares outside the frame.All the other squares must be back to their original positions.
