• Originally designed as a blog but has now grown way beyond it

Content Management System (CMS)

• Separates the Design, Functionality and the content of the site

• A CMS allows one area to be updated without effecting another

• WordPress is currently the most popular CMS in use on the Internet

wordpress.com – A cloud based blogging platform. It is hosted on WordPress servers.Not very customizable

wordpress.org - Powerful web publishing platform hosted on your server. Very customizable

Post vs. Page

Page - Top tier information that does not change (about us, contact)

Post - Single article focused on a specific topic, event or interest. Usually presented in reverse chorological order. Posts can be categorized and tagged to help sort content.

Custom Post Type – Similar to regular post but may have a different layout or a specific purpose. (ex. galleries, events)

Categories and Tags

Category - Your website table of contents. Like a newspaper section or a table of contents in a book.

Tags - Are index words. Keywords. Like an index at the back of a book.

Plugins are bits of code that add functionality to your site.

Widgets are areas in the side bar, footer or

article that support plugins
