WordPress Made Easy

Getting started with Wordpress? We put together this job aid to make it easy to understand Wordpress and help you get started administering your WordPress powered website. Have fun and enjoy all the features and functionality available to make your site everything you need! ACCESS ("wp-admin" is the default URL addition. If it doesn't work ask whoever installed your site) http://www.yoursite.com/wp-adminLogin: (put in your username)Password: (put in your password) DASHBOARD The WordPress dashboard is what you first see when you login. The left menu is the navigation where you add Posts, Pages, change appearance of the site, and also set settings.

POSTS Posts show up on the first page of the site. You can add, edit, remove posts, and change setting for commenting, how many posts appear on the first page, and also add categories and sub-categories. When you click Posts from the Dashboard you get the Edit Posts screen. You can quick edit to change high level settings or fully edit and basically go to the Post and edit.

The left column allows you to ‘Add New’ posts and manage Categories. On the Add New Post page you write a post using the tools similar to MS Word. You can also categories the post and at the bottom of the screen set whether or not to allow users to comment on posts. When you’re done writing your post you can Save Draft, Preview, and when ready you Publish.

Inserting Media You can insert media into Posts and Pages easily using the tools in the toolbar.

You can select files from your computer or add the images and video using the URL (For example; get the URL of a video from YouTube and insert into post). If you have previously used an image it automatically gets added to your WordPress Media Library and you can reuse it later. When you insert an image you need to click Insert into Post, not Save Changes! Save changes is only if you are changing characteristics of media you’ve already added in your post or page.

PAGES Pages are created and manipulated like posts but they are the pages of your website (other than your homepage). You create your pages and set the order of pages. Order is what order the pages show up in your website menu. The default is Order = 0. Set any number for Order in the order you want the pages to display in the menu (i.e. 0, 1, 2, 3).

APPEARANCE Appearance allows you to quickly change the design of your site. If you have designs uploaded to the server they will show up here. You can then simply select the design to see a preview of how your site ill look and decide to either activate it or just close the preview and keep your existing design.

Get New Themes The easiest way to get new themes by installing them from the WordPress Theme gallery. Just click Add New Themes and you will get to the Theme Gallery. Search then pick the theme you like and install it. When it’s installed it will show up in the available Themes under Appearance.

Widgets Widgets allow you to add modules to your site to display content, bring in feeds, etc. It is best to play around with Widgets to learn what they can do or get support from your site admin.

SETTINGS You most likely will not need to change Settings but if you do you do so after clicking Settings in the left column. The only thing you might want to change is the Blog Title and Tag line.

ENJOY YOUR SITE! The Dashboard left menu also allows you to add users (very easy) and use plugins (which you will likely not need) but feel free to explore everything WordPress has to offer. The best way to learn about everything you can do it to try it. That’s it. Enjoy your new site!
