EPRI Mission and Members

▪ Independent, Non-Profit, Collaborative

▪ 450+ participants in more than 30 countries

▪ EPRI members generate approximately 90% of the electricity in the North America

▪ International funding –25% of EPRI’s research, development, and demonstrations

What Are We Trying to Achieve?

EPRI’s Research Objective

• To improve the situational awareness of control center operators when operating the increasingly complex and evolving transmission system of today and tomorrow

Objective for Utilities

• How do we define the information operators need in real time for the evolving system?

• How do we present the information to operators?

• How do we make it easy for the operators to affect change based on the information received?

Objective of this Session

• Discuss an approach to work domain analysis developed by EPRI for a transmission operator in the US, building on previous work for IESO. Discuss how this can be applied to display design, alarm management, situational awareness

Context of Work Domain Analysis Efforts

Ecological Interface Design

• Work Domain Analysis developed by Rasmussen et al. 1980s

WDA for IESO

• Hilliard, Tran Jamieson developed a WDA for IESO Ontario

WDA for Duke Energy TOP

• EPRI Case Study 2019

• Specific to Transmission Operations as defined by NERC

Next Steps

▪ Define a WDA for a Balancing Authority, Reliability Coordinator, Security Coordinator, Distribution System Operator

▪ Extend or improve the abstraction hierarchy. Incorporate skills, time, relationship to situational awareness, mental workload?

▪ Seek industry and vendor feedback

▪ Design dashboards based on the WDA, in particular for PMU systems

EPRI Advanced Situational Awareness & AI in Control Center - Interest Group

Research Challenge

Research Requirements

The evolving system requires new information, data, tools, solutions, training, techniques. There is much we can learn from human factors research in other industries and apply to transmission. The hardware tools and AI algorithms are accessible and applicable.

Methodology

Advanced Situational Awareness – Derive the information requirements, map the information

flow, identify tools for monitoring situational awareness

Artificial Intelligence – Identify the tools, use cases, data flow for maximizing AI technology in control centers. Develop AI algorithms for use in

real time operations

The 2019 PlanEPRI to form an interest group of TSOs, SMEs for advanced situational awareness and AI in control centers.

Interest group will involve, knowledge share, webcasts, tool development, face to face meetings.
