It's a new year! A senior class has graduated, and a newsenior class has taken over. A new freshmen class hasmoved in, beginning the journey through high school. Thefreshmen began their day in the main gym where they splitinto their forever homes known as advisories. After thelunch, the rest of the student body began pouring into theschool. The newest trends, fanny packs, hydro flasks, scrunchies, and permed hair, could be seen as the upperclassmen arrived. The second half of the day consisted of allstudents going to their classes for both 'A' and 'B' days. Thisgave everyone the chance to become familiar with classlocation, advisory changes, and new teachers. The schedulethis year was new for not only the freshmen, but for theentire student population. Instead of two 'A' days, two 'B'days, and a 'C' day, there would no longer be a 'C' day in theschedule. Also new to the returning students and staff wasthe lunch schedule which, instead of two lunches, there wasnow three lunches; the lunches were based on academy, andresulted in a study hall and advisory time that totaled anhour for all students. Although students were apprehensiveabout this change, everyone adjusted.

everyone excited for the busy day ahead of them.Students got creative with their class lip syncs and wenthead-to-head in challenges organized by the StudentCouncil. The lip sync winner was a tough decision for thejudges, but luckily the seniors ended up on top with ashowstopping performance. Although, if the parentscould have won, some agreed they were a closecontender. This was our day to show our school spirit, to getcompetitive, to honor our seniors, and to prepare for thebig homecoming game against the Crete Cardinals. Tomake things even more competitive, we had games suchas chubby bunny, musical chairs, numerous differentrelay races, and a crowd favorite- tug-of-war. The classesbecame rivals for the day. Some classes may holdgrudges against others, but at the end of the day, we allcame together, sat in the same bleachers with our BlueDevil pride and cheered on our football boys.

This season was full of hard transitionsand many obstacles. The team enteredthe year blindly with a whole newcoaching staff. Thistruly showed the passion and potentialthis group of girls had. "Since I came fromthe middle school to the high school [as acoach], it was so intimidating at first, but Ifeel like we had a successful year. Thegirls were so fun and welcoming. Overall, that was the best record our team has hadin 10 years, and I'm glad to be the one tohelp make it happen," Coach AshleyClassen. Not only did the girls improvepersonally on the court, but they also gaveback to the community through volleyballcamps for younger girls who are eager toone day play volleyball at the high school.Although this was a transition year forvolleyball, the team rallied together tosupport one another as well as the newcoaches. "I felt our season was an excitingexperience with new coaches and, for me,playing with the seniors who I've basicallygrown up with," junior Mackenzie Caba. Cross country is more than a team; it's a family. "Cross countryis one of this schools most successful sports and to be apart ofit feels really good. You won't see a group of more determinedpeople," senior Sydney Nelson shared. Rain or shine- runners do what they do best. Run. From thehottest summer days to the bitter cold of fall, this sport isabout pushing your body to the absolute limit. Step-after-step,mile-after-mile, they built their endurance for the ultimate goal:run at the state course in Kearney. To cheer for the runners, you almost had to be in just asgood of shape as they were. Every course is different andunique in its own way. Many of the Blue Devil runners favoritecourse was at Syracuse because it is notorious for being a fastcourse, and often, the first cold meet of the season. Some races, it was more important to focus on time cutsthan place and vice versa. At the district meet, where the fieldof runners was a lot smaller than most other races, so it wasmore important to focus on those places. Boys had a field of36 and girls had a field of 37. Senior Stockton Graham tookfirst place at the district meet breaking the 17 minute barrierwith a time of 16:57. The boys team won with five of six varsityboys earning medals. It was remarkable to see how much the teammates mean toeach other. At the cross country banquet, awards, voted on byteammates, were handed out: Team Captain and Most ValuableRunner was awarded to seniors Stockton Graham and MadisonNelson; Rookie of the Year was awarded to freshmen CarterMoss and Natalie Briggs. The runners, led by head coach Todd Nott and assistantcoach Mikayla Rhone, learned more than just running; thecoaches shared, with the team, valuable lessons to carry withthem for the rest of their lives. Rhone left the team at the endof the season, and she will be greatly missed. She left hermark and shared many miles of smiles with the runners.

The band's motto for the year was "Striving forExcellence." They earned an "Excellence" rating at theNebraska State Bandmasters Association competitionwith their show titled "Afterworld", mastering thismotto. There were many changes this year, includinga new band director, new equipment, and newuniforms. The band was able to purchase newuniforms and equipment because of the schoolcontribution, of the student fundraising, and a greatamount of donations from community supporters. The Plattsmouth Alumni Association puts on aBand Galla every year. In the spring of 2019, theyhelped to raise over $40,000 in donations. Thesedonations gave the band the ability to buy somemuch-needed new equipment, including: new mallets, mallet racks for the bass drums, a field sound system,an auxiliary cart, a marimba field cart, chimes on afield cart, two drum major podiums, a drill-writingsoftware called "Pyware", and marching drill. Theschool district approved a grant of $67,000 thatcovered new drum heads, a fifth bass drum, threenew Sousaphones, and all new uniforms.
