Us TOO was founded in 1990 at a meeting at the University of Chicago by men with prostate cancer and their families. Their mission charted a course for the first ever peer-to-peersupport organization for the prostate cancer community. Asinternational interest grew, we became Us TOO International in1992. In 2002, Us TOO’s mission was updated to read: To communicate timely, personalized and reliableinformation enabling informed choices regarding detectionand treatment of prostate cancer.

While the Board always looks closely at their goals, in June2008 the Board of Directors also closely reviewed Us TOO’smission with the intention of creating a Corporate Plan thatwould smoothly guide the organization beyond forthcomingleadership changes toward Us TOO’s 20th anniversary in2010… and beyond! This plan was designed so the baton couldbe easily passed to future leaders and help the organizationretain its commitment to being a peer volunteer supportorganization.

The forward-thinking leadership of Us TOO’s Board of Directorsput in place a solid and clear course for Us TOO’s futuredirection.

“Working Together” perfectly captures Us TOO’s efforts and intention in 2008. Not only did Us TOO work together internally but also withother prostate cancer organizations in the United States and around the world. Some key highlights of Us TOO’s far-reachingcollaboration include:

• Us TOO’s new 2008-2011 Corporate Plan was developed in June and adopted in September. The CorporatePlan focused on key challenges, such as re-examining the Us TOO Mission, preparing for Us TOO’s 20thAnniversary in 2010 and developing education/training and standards to strengthen and expand services.

• Board Chairman, Jim Kiefert, departed as Chairman at the end of 2008 and was appointed as DirectorEmeritus; new Board Chairman, Fred Mills, was appointed and assumed his role January 1, 2009.

• The Minority and Underserved Population (MUP) Pilot Program reached its 5-year conclusion.Among the pilot’s achievements: establishing itself in 19-high incidence locations, establishinghundreds of organizational partnerships, recruiting and training hundreds of volunteers andcreating and disseminating thousands of pieces of materials to people at risk.

• Produced and disseminated new education materials and newsletters and streamlined UsTOO’s on-line order fulfillment process.

• Raised awareness about prostate cancer by working with other organizations at conferences,in the workplace, in the media, at gatherings and awareness events in the community, aswell as in locations where people relax and come together.

• Advocated at the national and international level by creating new organizations and workingwith others.

• Increased recognition of, communication with, and education for, community volunteers withthe Edward C. Kaps “HOPE” award, the Us TOO University, new email lists as well as greateraccess to Us TOO’s redesigned newsletters.

• Added new community chapter/support groups to work with the Us TOO home office to expandsupport, education and advocacy services.

2008 was a year of progress, recognition and transition. It was the forth year of the Kirk-Kiefert Teamworking with a Board of Directors that became unified and worked together in many ways, butparticularly these two:

• To develop a workable plan for the future of Us TOO International • To accomplish a smooth transition as my tenure as a board member expired.

As a result, Us TOO’s 2008-2011 Corporate Plan, which provides consistent direction throughmission and vision statements, was adopted and put into action.

One highlight this year was the recognition of Us TOO as an international organization. We were anintegral part of the formation of the Worldwide Prostate Cancer Coalition (WWPCC) which started atthe International Union of Cancer Control conference (UICC) in 2006. Us TOO was invited toparticipate in WWPCC meetings in Geneva, Paris and Australia. The Coalition is now a recognizedworldwide organization.

In response to the question, “What are we doing for Us TOO Support Group Chapters?” we canproudly point to the many new publications sent free to our chapters and available electronically on our website. We also created a special Burning Issues section with our monthly HotSheetnewsletter. These activities help to embody our mission of Providing Timely, Personalized andReliable Information.

Counted among the tens of thousands of men who die each year from prostate cancer, three formerboard members passed away this year. Ron Fabric (Director Emeritus), Harry Pinchot and RobertHeustad, MD, were valiant warriors who gave so much to others and shared their knowledge andcaring with so many.

Over the past seven years as an Us TOO Board Member, I served as Treasurer for two years andChairman for four years. A few years ago, a leadership team of Board Members helped with thesmooth transition when our previous president/CEO resigned and our Board Chairman retired. In2004, the Board of Directors did a great job of selecting a new CEO who would carry out the missionand vision of our organization. The transition went smoothly and our organization grewexponentially. It is with a great sense of accomplishment this year that I turned over the leadership toUs TOO’s new Board Chairman, Fred Mills.

I really appreciate the Board of Directors electing me as a Board Member Emeritus and naming anUs TOO University Scholarship in my name. It has been a very rewarding and fulfilling experience. I loved it!!!

In reflection, 2008 was a year of excitement and progress as well as planning for our future. And then, by year’s end, we experienced a period of new unforeseen economic challenges. It alsoconcluded my fourth year as Us TOO President & CEO and closed the chapter on working withJim Kiefert as Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Jim was on the search committee that brought me to Us TOO and was a dynamic, tireless, engaging leader who will continue his involvement with Us TOO Board as a Director Emeritus aswe move into the future. There will be more to enjoy, Jim!

From day one, Jim and I sought to form collaborations and leave behind old barriers. We certainlysaw that pay off during 2008 and we have titled this Annual Report “Working Together”. As Jimmentions in his message, new progress was made internationally as well as here in the UnitedStates to work closer with other prostate cancer groups, building on years of relationship-buildingand discussion.

We also welcomed new support groups, saw the launch of Rick Lyke’s new awareness effort,“Pints for Prostates”, conducted or first Edward C. Kaps Hope Award program to recognizeoutstanding support group volunteers, concluded the five year Pilot Minority and UnderservedProgram collaboration with the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and dealt withrecord-breaking rain fall and flooding during our Chicago Run, Walk ‘n Roll event. It was anoutstanding year and we did not back away from the challenges.

I am confident that our collaborative approach will continue into the future as Fred Mills assumesthe Chairmanship during a dramatic and unforeseen economic downturn felt globally. We will seewhat impact this will have as we attempt to implement the new 2008-2011 Corporate Plan in atime period of economic challenge, but I am hopeful and excited.

With our new Corporate Plan in hand, Board leadership in place, volunteers actively working withthe home office staff in growing numbers and important projects receiving resources --we enter2009 with concern for the developing new economic uncertainties but also a resolute commitmentto stay active on our mission.

My thanks goes out to all those that have helped and supported our efforts during 2008 andenjoyed our collaborations; as we focus on our work ahead I look forward to continuing our SEA Blue campaign together…support, educate and advocate!

A MESSAGEfrom Tom Kirk, President and CEO, Us TOO International

Sincerely,

Thomas KirkPresident and CEO

A SUCCESSFUL PILOT PROGRAM

This year saw the successful completion of Us TOO’s five year pilot program, EarlyDetection on Survivorship of Cancer in the Underserved Populations Program. The program and successfully accomplished its mission and exceeded its goals.

By its very definition, a pilot program is not meant to be a permanent program. A pilot program is meant as a test to demonstrate viability in key areas, in this case:

• Private organization and government agencies can effectively work together

• Us TOO can establish an effective infrastructure to serve the goals of the program

• Us TOO can create meaningful materials for target populations, materials well received

• People will respond to the call for action and volunteer/participate, and enjoy the program.

The project goals were:

1) to develop education materials and publications

2) to advocate and provide supportive resources

3) to conduct outreach and support by training volunteers

4) to build awareness of the danger and threat of prostate cancer to assure early detection and effective treatment in targeted minority and underserved communities.

The program reached out into the targeted Pilot-Site areas and built collaborativerelationships with a growing number of organizations such as universities, hospitals, community agencies, churches, health departments and State Comprehensive Cancer Control (CCC) agencies, of which Iowa is one. (See page 5.)

This program was the largest program ever undertaken by Us TOO. As a “train the trainer”program, it was designed to empower people to reach out in their community with anaccurate and vitally important message, armed with effective tools. Working within theircommunities, hundreds of trained volunteers were able to reach those who are currentlyunderserved.

Most notably, the fifth year of this program continued to expanded:

• the volunteer base

• the reach of the program

• the number of targeted materials.

In May, Us TOO staff flew to Atlanta for a special CDC Program/Meeting, where GeneWheeler, program director, made a presentation about Us TOO’s successful program.

Special thanks to Us TOO’s volunteers and Board members for their vision, commitment anddedication to the minority and underserved population, which set Us TOO on course for thisprogram. Great appreciation to Gene Wheeler and the hundreds of trained volunteers for theirfine work throughout the program. Also to Terri Gibbons, Us TOO Program Manager, for herenthusiastic commitment to the program.

Locations were selected because of high incidentrates. The number of pilot sites grew from the original4 to 17.

The Program reached out into the targeted Pilot-Siteareas and built collaborative relationships with agrowing number of organizations.

The “Train-the-Trainer” Program recruited and trainedgrowing numbers of community volunteers. Programevaluation showed participant satisfaction with thetraining and increased knowledge levels of prostatecancer.

The trained Facilitators actively distributed Us TOOProstate cancer awareness material, reached out intheir communities and had growing levels of face-to-face contacts with individuals (encounters) in theircommunities at health fairs, churches andbusinesses.

SEA BLUE EVERYWHERE!

“We greatly appreciate theopportunity to partner withthe Us TOO organization toeducate Iowans, specificallyAfrican American men and

families about their high rateof prostate cancer. Us TOOprovided the message and

organizations working toconquer cancer.”

- Holly Smith, IowaComprehensive Cancer

Control Program Coordinator.

In 2007, the SEA Blue campaign was created to highlight Us TOO’s focus on Support, Education and Advocacy – S E A – and to highlightthe disparity of awareness between prostate cancer and breast cancer. The 2008, the SEA Blue Campaign continued with an updated posterand a collaborative billboard campaign in Iowa which followed. These efforts were designed to coincide with National Minority Awarenessmonth in April and built upon the September 2007 SEA Blue campaign poster.

RAISING AWARENESS

Awareness activities included:

• More active media contacts, with mention of Us TOO in the New York Times, cancerpublications, Iowa Public Radio, Johns Hopkins newsletter and the Vital Options Radio show, for example.

• Awareness materials and exhibits at key medical and research meetings, such as the AmericanUrological Association (AUA), the American Society for Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and theSouthwest Oncology Group (SWOG).

• Us TOO accepted the invitation to serve on the Stand Up to Cancer Advocacy AdvisoryCouncil with over 20 other cancer organizations, with representatives present at thetelevision filming at Kodak Theater in LA, a nationally televised event which highlighted theneed for cancer research funding.

• Us TOO once again was a sponsoring organization, with volunteers and staff conductingsupport groups and greeting attendees at an exhibit booth, at the 2008 Prostate CancerResearch Institute annual conference held in Los Angeles. Us TOO volunteer Ralph Vallewas awarded the Harry Pinchot award by Tom Kirk during the conference.

• Based on the 2007 agreement with America’s Prostate Cancer Initiative, Us TOO was againactive with Sneakers@ Work Day awareness event in September 2008.

• Also in September, National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, Us TOO Board member BillPalos was active with the Quad Cities Marathon, assuring that an opportunity was available tohighlight prostate cancer and support Us TOO. In Houston TX, Tex Us TOO volunteers(including past Us TOO Board member, Joe Piper) again conducted the ‘Dad’s Day 5 K’ whichsupports local prostate cancer organizations and Us TOO’s home office.

A core element of Us TOO’s SEA Blue Campaign, launched in September 2007, is to increase the awareness of prostate cancer. In fact, thename ‘Us TOO’ recognizes the long-standing disparity between the recognition of breast cancer and prostate cancer. The new 2008-2011 UsTOO Corporate Plan emphasized this focus.

RICK LYKE’S PINTS FOR PROSTATES LAUNCHED“Pints for Prostates” Prostate Cancer awareness campaign was launched in 2008, with a goal of reaching men through the universal language of beer. “We want to communicate with them in a friendly and non-threatening way about the need for regular PSA testing,” says Rick Lyke, a 47-year-old Charlotte, N.C., marketing executive and drinks journalist who was diagnosed and treated with prostate cancer in 2008.

Rick’s response was to give back so he designed and createdPints for Prostates. This included a pro-bono awarenesscampaign that was featured in major publications, such as Time,Sports Illustrated, Draft Magazine and others, reaching over 25million people. This campaign directed people to a new webpagewhich was linked to Us TOO’s information and resources. Inaddition, Us TOO benefits from the funds raised by Pints forProstates.

Pints for Prostates events took place in: Durham, NC; Charlotte,NC; Denver, CO; Fort Worth, TX; Austin, TX.

A special thank you to corporate sponsor, Rogue Ales, as well as the vitally important in-kind sponsors and individual donors.

Greater Chicago Prostate Cancer Run, Walk ‘n’ RollRain Day - September

When planning an event, there are countless detailsto organize and coordinate. The one thing that isimpossible to anticipate is the weather! Despitemonths of preparation and meticulous attention todetails, the greater Chicago area received recordbreaking rain and flooding on the scheduled dateon the Greater Chicago Prostate Cancer Run, Walk‘n’ Roll and the event was postponed (notcancelled). E SUPPORTING THE CAUSE

The "Re-Run" - October

Fortunately, October 19th was a glorious day and the rescheduled Greater Chicago Run, Walk ‘n’ Roll - dubbed the “re-run” –went off without a hitch. Many extended families, couples, individuals, as well as local celebrities participated in a well attended, inspiring day. We were pleased to have Mrs. Illinois, Michelle Beckwith, attend the event, whose father lost his life to prostatecancer. She represents those whose loved ones face prostate cancer.

This event is the result of a vital collaboration between The Wellness Place andUs TOO International. This year marked the fourth anniversary of this eventwhich continues to be the result of working together with The Wellness Place. From its origin, the event was designed to raise funds for a new model ofprogramming for prostate cancer patients and their families. As a result of thisevent, there has been a dramatic increase in prostate cancer-related servicesprovided in the Chicago area at the Wellness Place and in Us TOO chapters.

ADVOCACY AT HOME AND ABROAD

In the USA

As a Chicago-based organization, Us TOO’s work on the advocacy side isbased on collaborations with Washington, DC - based advocacy groups, such as the Cancer Leadership Council (CLC), One Voice Against Cancer(OVAC), the National Health Council (NHC) and key prostate cancergroups. There were some significant activities that occurred in 2007 thathelped us move into 2008. For example, the Department of Defense held its10th Anniversary of the Prostate Cancer Research Program (PCRP) byholding the “IMPaCT: Innovative Minds in Prostate Cancer Today” meetingin September 2007. This meeting drew together Consumer Peer Reviewsincluding dozens of volunteers nominated by Us TOO and deepened thesupport Us TOO has for the Department of Defense PCRP.

During 2008, Us TOO moved to further collaborate and more actively speak to the need forincreased prostate cancer research funding at the Department of Defense. The Board Chairmanand President and CEO, Jim Kiefert and Tom Kirk, both attended September activities organizedby AdMeTech Foundation, Zero-The Project to End Prostate Cancer and PHEN in Washington,DC and visited elected officials to speak for increased support for the PCRP and vowedincreased effort in 2009.

Of high importance to Us TOO’s advocacy strategy is improved screening for prostate cancerdetection and treatment. In expanded collaboration throughout 2008, Us TOO worked closelywith AdMeTech on an effort to develop a Consensus Conference on this issue. In September,AdMeTech and Zero-The Project to End Prostate Cancer, featured a Congressional Briefing titled,Prostate Cancer Crisis: Early Diagnosis as a Solution. Us TOO was there and actively speakingon the issue from the patients’ view and during 2008 highlighted and sought support for thePRIME Act imaging research authorization bill.

Also in September 2008, working to highlight the African American Disparity issue, Us TOO waspresent and verbal during the PHEN (the Boston-based Prostate Health Education Network)developed Disparity Summit which featured a Town Hall meeting to develop a Prostate CancerBlue Print for the New Administration. Clearly, as Us TOO ended 2008, such increasedcollaboration will develop further in the years ahead.

We give a special thank you to key volunteers, Fred Gersch and Kathy Meade, for theirunwavering support and continued participation in prostate cancer-related advocacy activities. They both do a beautiful job representing and speaking for Us TOO.

OME AND ABROAD

Putting the International back in Us TOO International

This year’s activity breathed new life in to an important piece of our name, putting “International” firmly back in to UsTOO International, Inc. Three key events provided further international connections and opportunities for globalcollaboration:

• The UICC (International Union of Cancer Control) International Cancer Congress August meeting in Genevaaccepted a proposal to present a session on the formation and development of the World Wide Prostate CancerCoalition (WWPCC). Us TOO’s President & CEO chaired a panel presentation on the progress and plans for theWWPCC.

• In November, Ferring Pharmaceuticals sponsored a meeting in Paris attended by key WWPCC members toformulate an international effort to explore and focus on the impact of prostate cancer on the individual, the familyand the workplace, titled: Learning, Loving and Living with Prostate Cancer. Plans are underway for 2009 to holdawareness events in Europe and the US as a result of this collaboration.

• Also in November, the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia organized and supported a national conferencewhich presented another opportunity for key members of the WWPCC to move forward work on the group and toserve as faculty during the conference. Board Chairman, Jim Kiefert, and President and CEO, Tom Kirk were invitedto attend and present.

The World Wide Prostate Cancer CoalitionUs TOO has had a long standing goal to expand our reach internationally, fully embodying the name, Us TOOInternational. Our focus this year was to be actively involved in “a leadership role of international/global collaborations.”In large part, this has taken place through the World Wide Prostate Cancer Coalition (WWPCC).

• The World Wide Prostate Cancer Coalition concept began in 2006 at the UICC meeting in Washington, DC as search by many for better ways to collaborate globally.

• Us TOO stayed involved and organizing continued in 2007 and into 2008.

MENTORING AND ACKNOWLEDGING LEADERS

Us TOO University

Launched in 2006, this year’s Us TOO University built on the success of its three previous well-received events in SouthCarolina, Texas and Chicago. In 2008, Us TOO University continued to deliver its motto, Learn, Laugh, Lead with a new lookand a refocused theme resulting in the most successful event and the best attendance to date! The fabulous location forNovember’s event, lovely Tempe, Arizona, certainly didn’t hurt attendance in any way.

In keeping with Us TOO’s broader theme - “working together” – Us TOO University’s chapter leader workshop was far moreinteractive, fostering lively dialog and lasting connections. Us TOO’s Chapter Leader Guidelines and Standards, in developmentin 2008, were presented, clarifying roles, vision, and generating vibrant dialog.

Special thanks to the Us TOO chapters in Arizona, who worked tirelessly with Us TOO staff to develop, design, promoted andsupport this event. Special thanks also to sanofi-aventis, for provided funding for this program, which was designed to mentorleaders.

Peer-to-peer support is at the core of Us TOO’s mission. Through the volunteer network, prostate cancer support takes on a new and caringface in communities around the globe. While Us TOO chapters/support groups are independent, Us TOO home office provides a resourcecenter and facilitation, as well as the central webpage with links to each community volunteer group and the latest information, support, materials and tools for the prostate cancer community as a whole.

In addition to regular support group meetings, many Us TOOsupport groups also engage in some or all of the followingactivities:

• Arrange for qualified speakers on topics of interested totheir attendees

• Offer educational seminars or symposiums

• Create awareness and educational materials

• Become involved in prostate cancer detection/screeningevents

• Advocate for national and statewide prostate cancerlegislation

• Create regular newsletters, websites or blogs

• Distribute materials at community healthy fairs

• Speak with the media to tell prostate cancer stories

• Conduct awareness and fundraising events

An independent network of vital, action-oriented volunteerchapter leaders brings Us TOO’s mission to life incommunities all over the world.

Working TogetherIn 2008, our goal was to increase internal collaboration, cooperation and communication within the volunteer network, sharing peer-to-peer resources so no one needs to reinventthe wheel. One activity that reflected that goal was the ‘Gettingto Know You’ project, the first step enabling the home office tobetter communicate with volunteers, link people to local supportgroups and help volunteers tobetter communicate with eachother - - - a real network ofchapters. In addition, thesemi-monthly Chapter LeaderNewsletter became ChapterNews! and moved to UsTOO’s home page for greatervisibility, idea sharing andpeer support.

FINANCIALS

The Us TOO Chapter Revenue and Expenses, for the most part, are not included in the Us TOO International, Inc. financial audit conducted by John Kopczyk,Ltd., Certified Public Accountants. The majority of Us TOO chapters are small community groups that do not solicit or raise finds. Reporting information wasreceived from 142 chapters reporting for the calendar year 2008 ending December 31, 2008. The groups in Houston and New York City reported revenuesand expenses that appear in the 2008 audit.

The unaudited reports submitted by the chapters summarize the revenue and expense activity of their group. The compilation report was compiled from the25 groups reposting income and expenses and was combined into a report by the Us TOO staff for management reporting purposes and are listed above. Theaccounting practices of the local Chapter groups are not necessarily the same practices followed by the Us TOO international office.

In Memoriam

For warriors who fought their battle

as long and hard as their bodies could stand;

their war is now over, their legacies written in our

hearts and minds. We remember them one by one.

(From One by One, A Warrior's Reflection, by Jerry & Jo Ann Hardy, 2007)

Ron Fabric (Director Emeritus)

Dr. Robert Hustead, MD

Harry Pinchot

Every year we work diligently to support, educate and

advocate for those living with prostate cancer and

their loved ones. The sad truth is, however, the far too

many men die from this disease. While we raise up the

names here of the fallen warriors who have provided

leadership to Us TOO by serving on our Board of

Directors, we know these man represent thousands of

others whose battle is over.
