LOCAL HISTORY AT UCLAN (1)

Conventional approaches to local history have largely fallen away here, except for dissertation work:

• Younger students show little enthusiasm.• Numbers are small.

However, employability modules allowed a more successful approach

THE PLACEMENT MODULE (1)FINDING A PLACEMENT

While we encourage all students to include a placement in their programme, there is no right to take this module.

You must start the process by identifying a willing provider, and we cannot guarantee that this will be successful unless you are prepared to be persistent and flexible.

We reserve the right to refuse to allow particular students to seek a placement: anyone doing the module becomes an ambassador for the University in general, and for placements in particular, so anyone not taking it seriously does a great deal of lasting harm on both counts.

Students with a proven record of failing to complete modules, or of poor attendance, will have to convince the staff team that they will complete a placement: the provider is not paid to facilitate your learning, unlike the University, and they expect students to attend regularly according to an agreed plan. If you have continuing medical or other problems, these would have to be made plain to the provider in advance, and the implications discussed.

THE MODULE (3)‘This module relies heavily on your following the formula laid down in this handbook and discussed during the preliminary briefing session, and doing so without regular supervision.

If the module tutor feels that you have fallen seriously below standards that are expected, you will be warned, and if it continues, you will be penalised by the docking of 8% of the overall mark.

There are also penalties for unreasonably late submissions, so if you have problems, contact the module tutor.’

CONCLUSION• We have got students researching and passing

on local history without realising it, while also giving them practical skills

• We are building links with organisations and helping make good their shortage of labour

• We are offering our expertise without trying to exert dominance locally

• We are raising general interest in a wide range of local history topics among the general public
