A FABRICAsociedade Antiga Cerâmica de Coimbra - Refurbish of an Old FactoryProject Manager: Luísa Bebiano Correia; Atelier “O Corvo” | Team: Diogo Rodrigues, Pedro Canotilho, Ivan sachArea: 700 m2
This old building was used as a ceramic factory at least for two hundred years. many of the building’s main fea-tures are the result of several and consecutive informal “up-grades” done by the workers themselves in order to solve increasing production needs. The comission is to refurbish this factory and transform it into somekind of “industrial museum cluster” open to gen-eral public which also includes a design office and a small cafeteria, and suitable enough to host a small team of artisans. We decided to touch as little as possible in the factory’s original structure, preserving it’s peculiar and awk-ward architectural layout, only to include special skylights in order to facilitate proper natural lighting.

The construction of lobito’s Ethnographical museum has the purpose of both ensuring appropriate infrastructure to the exhibition and preservation of the actual museographic collection and increases that same collection, with empha-sis in Ovimbundo patrimony. The study and analysis of Southern angola modern archi-tecture were very important to the project’s preparation, so as to comprehend the main themes and technical solutions. That same study has enlightened a will to guide the build-ing in a relation between full-empty, indoor-outdoor. from a formal point of view, the museum’s building, that also in-cludes a Conference Center, is defined by several outdoor covered paths that connect the series of interior programs available at the museum, which results in patios and out-door areas with different applications to the museum. The indoor areas include programs that intend to merge the educational concept of the museum with leisure. With that purpose in mind, the project to the museum included exhibition rooms, a movie theater, a coffee shop or a store. regarding administrative and logistical areas, both are independent from the museum’s program, by separate circulation areas.

This house belongs to a larger comission to refurbish an old country estate and transform it into a country hotel lo-cated in the province of Portalegre in alentejo which is a large agricultural region in Portugal. The complex com-prises an early XX’th century mansion which will be used as the main hotel , and other several smaller buildings ( the barn, the caretaker house and the celler ) which are to be adapted into guesthouses. The house’s design follows some of the traditional local architecture principles, seen on the existing remaining buildings , with thick walls cov-ered in white plaster , small framing in the facade to avoid intense sunlight. Despite, being built in concrete, it bounds with the existent estate’s outerwall and many of the house’s design features are evocative of local architecture: small framed windows, single roof and white plastered walls. The house includes a masterbedroom and a living room with mezzanine, a kitchen and fireplace.

The comission was to design a beauty parlor on a ground-floor shop with a glassfront facing a pedestrian street. The shop is quite small, narrow and long and the program had to preview several treatment cabinets, so it was quite clear we had to think of a scheme that would allow us to fit all it was requested. We started to define a central axis in which we set two birch plywood boxes which host the treatment areas. The boxes do not touch the ceiling and specially designed spotlights are located above these boxes to set a quite the-atrical ambiance. also we chose to use a white coloured floor and walls in order to provide a clean and minimalist atmosphere.

The comission was to plan a small and very low budget agriculture facility dedicated to aromatic herbs production, including all the support buildings , fences and main ware-house. Therefore we thought it would be clever to divide the completion of the main warehouse in three stages, ac-cording to estimated revenue and the client’s interest to expand storage area. The building scheme starts with a 150sq m initial module composed of two recycled ship containers and a pre-fabricated metal roof which is easily expanded by adding several equal modules.

To whom it may concern,it was with great pleasure that i directed Diogo da Costa Coimbra rodrigues’ architecture internship in my studio. iwitnessed the excellent way in which all works were met, showing proof of accuracy, intelligence and imagination.Extending his interests not only in the field of architectural design as in wider areas, Diogo always met the challeng-es in a uniquely professional way and with a sensitivity rare to find.i also believe his team work integration capabilities are a very valuable factor in studio and business environment. Therefore, i strongly recommend the prospect of approv-al for an application to work in a studio or any creative field.

i believe that all backing to a professional work by the architect Diogo da Costa Coimbra rodrigues will be an asset to the team where he enters, besides the stimulus of architectural practice and its relations with capable people is also an investment in architecture as a discipline and profession.
