Cosalt is a leading provider o saety products and services to the industrial and oshore oil and gas markets across the globe. In 2011, one o Cosalt’s oshore support acilities participated in a pilot o the Step Change in Saety Workorce Engagement survey. Ahead o the survey, dialogue with the workorce was undertaken, advising the purpose o the Workorce Engagement survey through team members and posters. A ocus was made on the act that the survey was an industry, not a company, survey and that the entire process was condential. Saety representatives were engaged to acilitate running the survey at their constituency meetings. This resulted in a great response rate (close to 100% o those available during these meetings). The results showed solid visibility and support across the work site, but the need or improvement in the areas o communication, involvement, participation and challenge. These results provided a great opportunity to use the Workorce Engagement survey process as an engagement tool, not just a way to get numbers. Cosalt responded to the survey results by rstly making sure the key messages were clearly understood, i.e. the results were neither ‘good’ nor ‘bad’, but just an enabler or improvement. Positive scores were analysed as well as improvement areas – this ensured that engaging aspects o the work environment that already existed could be recognised and acknowledged. Undertaking the survey allowed Cosalt to compare their worksite results against an industry benchmark. This unique aspect o the survey enabled them to ocus on the top ve variances compared to other industry worksites. One key initial action ater the survey involved the saety committee exploring responses to a key “involvement” question. As part o this exploration, saety representatives volunteered to go back out to the workorce to get a deeper understanding o what led to these results. This ollow-up demonstrated that the survey was a key way to start dialogue about engagement. Cosalt’s response to the survey showed that: responses were condential people’ s attitudes and opinions had been heard key messages were ollowed up to make sure there was a shared understanding across the work site Workorce Engagement was now an on-going ocus – not  just a tick-the-box exer cise that gets led away The survey didn’t stand alone – results were cascaded across the worksite and through ortnightly/monthly departmental meetings, and incorporated into the HSEQ improvement plan So, what did a ocus on Workorce Engagement do at this work site? The ollowing images are beore-and-ater photos o a workshop designed to reduce manual handling o equipment. This initiative was suggested, planned and delivered by the workorce and is a great example o what an engaged workorce can achieve.
