STUDIO AND THE ENTREPRENEUR• We visited a salon by the name of Neha. It is located at Kirti Nagar in West Delhi. It was established in the year 1979. It’s a beauty clinic, spa centre and academy.

• Started in a single room in 1979, with the help of its quality services and over whelmimg response of the clients it is now spread over an area of 400 yards. In the recent renovation 2 halls, 6 cabins, 3 bathrooms and 2 spa room’s were incorporated.

• Mrs. Neelam Harish who worked as a makeup artist and hair stylist in the Oberoi Hotel is the main brain behind this successful salon. Being in the beauty industry for over 35 years, she now conducts seminars, workshops, conferences and her own training academy.

• She’s a beauty therapist, make-up artist, hair designer, skin treatment specialist, aroma therapist, acupressure therapist, cosmetologist and spa therapist.

• She has won many national and international awards.

• Her thumb rule is QUALITY OVER QUANTITY.

INNOVATIONS• The salon has innovated a number of services within its area. They were the first one to introduce SPA(2007) and AIRBRUSH(2007) in their area.

•They are very flexible and adapt themselves to changes and advancements in fashion. Example- hair extensions, nail art and extensions.

•As per customer’s demand they also started hair, beauty and makeup academy. There's a 6 month course which include all the three and costs about a lakh rupees.

•Another important innovation was to get RAF skin treatment from London. Galvanic Machine, Ultra Sonic Machine, Spa beds, Jacuzzi, Hair Steamers, Massagers and Micro Dermabrasion was also introduced.

CHALLENGES FACEDAs everyone faces challenges in the initial years so did NEHA.

• Initially was the education and exposure factor. Neelam had to educate clients about the difference between a body spa and a body massage. Also the clients were adamant to take spa because of the high cost.

• As airbrush makeup is expensive than the normal makeup, so it was difficult to convince the clients to opt for it.

• Clients were not ready to experiment with new products and techniques.

• Wedding season is the bread and butter of the salon business, so the off season becomes challenging when the only money earned is from the beauty and hair services.

• Since the key success factor of any salon is a friendly, educated staff, and the owner Neelam Harish is fortunate to have the above two.

• Besides it also provides quality services. In west Delhi, due to this it is famous, growing and on going since years.

• Bridal makeup at NEHA is very popular which is done by Mrs. Neelam Harish.

• Also the training academy run by Mrs Neelam is one of the success factors of the studio, as it runs certified courses of hairstyling, hair treatments, hair services, makeup, beauty treatments, nail art, nail extension, sari draping, salon management, spa therapy, reflexology, air brush makeup.

• Physical capital 1. Rent expenses –rs.40,000-50,000 at a good location. 2. Salary expenses of the staff and the manager ,generally a hair dresser gets higher salary as compared to a makeup artist and beautician. 3. Overhead expenses include water, electricity.

• Financial capitalImportant machines-ultra sonic machine, hair steamer as they have a very important role to play. Besides these a wide range of good quality, latest hair, makeup and beauty products are a must haves. Since the beauty industry has no end to it so one should have quality rather than quantity.

Would the owner send her staff for training programme to upgrade their skills? • Mrs. Neelam Harish is really open to upgrade the skills of her staff, so whenever there are good hair and beauty conferences ,seminars , hair and beauty exhibitions whether in India or abroad she sends her staff in order to adapt new theories and innovations in the field of hair , makeup and beauty.

• Ms. Divya Dahiya, writer of the beauty magazine DIVA TALK and daughter of Mrs. Neelam assists her mother in management of the salon and she provides in-house training to the staff to keep pace with changing needs of the industry.
