In 2011, the power saved by our drives cut global carbon dioxide emissions by 260 million tons.

For wind power, our induction and synchronous generators lower carbon dioxide emissions and help save the environment even more.

Our building automation technology (KNX) cuts up to 30% from the energy consumption of homes and facilities.

ABB’s solutions and applications are used in many fields deeply integrated in our everyday life. ABB technologies are used in homes, facilities, factories, power plants, trains, ships and even at the bottom of the sea.

ABB leads the way in smart grids: reliable distribution of electricity, energy efficiency and energy production based on renewable energy sources are the very core of our expertise.

Our industrial solutions and applications improve the effi-ciency, quality and safety of the customers’ processes – and save energy. We also offer the maintenance service for sup-porting the efficiency of the customer’s production equipment throughout its service life.

The greatest challenges of the future lie in climate change and the increased dependence on electricity. We cannot provide all the answers alone, but our products and solutions play a major role in coping with these challenges now and in the future. This brochure introduces you to ABB’s solution offering and operations in Finland.

Power ProductsThe division primarily serves electric utilities, as well as gas and water utilities and industrial and commercial customers, with a wide range of products and services to facilitate power generation, transmission and distribution. Key technologies include high- and medium-voltage switchgear, circuit breakers for a range of cur-rent ratings and voltage levels, power, distribu-tion, traction and other special transformers, as well as products to help transmit and distribute electricity efficiently and reliably, maintain power quality as well as control and manage electrical networks.

ABB products, systems and services guarantee reliable power transmission and distribution from production to end customers

Service The ABB Service business unit offers exten-sive maintenance services for industries and utility companies. The equipment and system maintenance contracts include planning and implementation of preventive maintenance, maintenance services, spare parts, train-ing and monitoring using indicators selected together with the customer. As a leading pro-vider of technology, ABB is able to assume responsibility for efficient production opera-tions throughout the life cycle of the produc-tion equipment.

Power SystemsThe division delivers solutions across the pow-er value chain. This includes system solutions for power generation, transmission technolo-gies like HVDC and FACTS, substations and distribution technologies for network manage-ment. The scope of a typical turnkey project includes design, system engineering, supply, installation, commissioning and testing. We integrate products from our own Power Prod-ucts division and external suppliers, adding value through domain expertise, engineering, project management and life cycle support services.

Discrete Automation and MotionThis division provides products, solutions and related services that increase industrial productivity and energy efficiency. Its motors, generators, drives, programmable logic con-trollers (PLCs), power electronics and robotics provide power, motion and control for a wide range of automation applications. The lead-ing position in wind generators and a growing offering in solar complement the industrial focus, leveraging joint technology, channels and operations platforms.

Low Voltage ProductsThe Low Voltage Products division manufac-tures low-voltage circuit breakers, switches, control products, wiring accessories, enclo-sures and cable systems to protect people, installations and electronic equipment from electrical overload. The division further makes KNX systems that integrate and automate a building’s electrical installations, ventilation systems, and security and data communica-tion networks.

Process AutomationThe main focus of this ABB business is to pro-vide customers with products and solutions for instrumentation, automation and optimiza-tion of industrial processes. The industries served include oil and gas, power, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, pulp and paper, metals and minerals, marine and turbocharging. Key customer benefits include improved asset pro-ductivity and energy savings.

The biggest energy challenges are increasing demand, availability, price and climate change. Improvement of energy efficiency on a global scale is the fastest, cheapest and most sustainable way to cut greenhouse emissions and guarantee the availability of energy.

Industrial control systemsABB delivers software and control systems to boost the oper-ations of power plants and industrial production units. With these systems, various industries can achieve top efficiency, steady quality and effective prediction of maintenance needs. A successful combination of control systems, efficient electri-cal motors and drives can multiply the energy savings. More than 40% of global consumption of electricity takes place in industry; electrical motors are responsible for two-thirds of the total. They are the tireless machines that keep industry going, and can be best controlled by drives. Drives may lower the energy consumption of pump, fan and conveyer motors by 50%.

ABB’s products, systems and services help customers produce and deliver more products and electricity per spent energy unit. ABB technology doubles the energy efficiency.

Energy efficiency, high industrial productivity and smart grids are the core of ABB expertise.

Lower investments and lower life cycle costsProducts, systems and services developed for process control, protection and operation help industrial customers improve the availability, productivity and energy efficiency of factories. As a leading provider of technology, ABB is able to assume responsibility for efficient production operations throughout the life cycle of the production equipment. Prod-uct maintenance is a major area of focus for our customer services. The offering ranges from individual device and sys-tem maintenance services to the complete ABB Full Service® solution.

Sustainable energy for the world

Building a smarter gridRenewable energy sources, improved energy efficiency and consumers’ prospects of managing their own energy usage mean significant changes in power networks.

Distributed power generation based on renewable energy sources is an integral part of a smart grid. It is a necessary response to the growing need for electricity and helps lower greenhouse emissions together with energy efficiency. Our advanced control and storage technology allows us to make major improvements to the reliability of the grid.

Together with renewable energy sources, reliability of power distribution is a core component of a smart grid. New distri-bution network technologies such as remote monitoring and control, automatic switching and fast location of faults are what we do best. They improve the quality of electricity, short-en outages and keep maintenance operations efficient.

1 | In 2011, our drives saved a total of 310 MWh of electric-ity around the world. The amount corresponds to the annual consumption of 75 million western families. The savings cut about 260 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions, which corresponds to the annual emissions of more than 65 million cars.

2 | Thanks to the ABB building automation system, the lighting of the Helsinki Music Centre requires up to 30% less energy.

3 | The power produced by the solar power plant on the roof of the ABB Pitäjänmäki facilities helps balance the fac-tory’s consumption peaks. Solar energy also keeps the fac-tory’s forklift trucks running.

Sustainability is about balancing economic success, environmental stewardship and social progress.

Products and systems developed and manufactured by ABB save raw materials and energy while improving efficiency.
