Working from Home for Year 5 Week beginning 29.6.2020 VIRTUAL SCHOOL RESIDENTIAL Hi everyone As we can’t go on our residential this year, Mrs Brown has been working hard to think up a set of challenges for you to do at a virtual residential at home! Nothing is compulsory, but the activities might be something a bit different and fun to do. The English and Maths lessons overviews can be found by scrolling down in the usual way and we have included a French activity, a music link to enjoy and the continuation of our Frida Kahlo art self-portraits work. We will recommence our other foundation subjects next week as this week is also a shorter one than usual. Wishing you a lovely week The Year 5 Team Sleep somewhere different. Do you have a tent you can put up in the garden? Can you build a den/shelter and sleep outside? Can you find somewhere else in your house to sleep? Try and spend a night somewhere different to your own bed. Can you make a leaf animal? Find a selection of leaves, and twigs – maybe you can go for a walk in the woods to collect them. Which animal can you make with what you have found? Try and learn something new. Pick up a new skill…. Can you juggle? Can you walk a tightrope? (or a line on the floor!) Can you swim in the sea? Can you light a fire/BBQ (with parental help)? Can you learn to do something outside that you have never done before. Obstacle course Can you set up an obstacle course in your garden or even on the beach? Time yourself doing your own course – how fast can you complete it? Maybe you can test it on a sibling or parent! Sensory trail Can you turn your obstacle course into a sensory trail? Or make a new one? Blindfold yourself and see if you can follow a piece of string around a trail – maybe going through some obstacles, round trees or through buckets of water! Rafting Can you build a raft that will float a soft toy for 2 minutes! Test it in the bath, in the sea or in a paddling pool!

Working from Home for Year 5 Week beginning 29.6.2020 VIRTUAL SCHOOL RESIDENTIAL

Hi everyone

As we can’t go on our residential this year, Mrs Brown has been working hard to think up a set of

challenges for you to do at a virtual residential at home! Nothing is compulsory, but the activities

might be something a bit different and fun to do. The English and Maths lessons overviews can be

found by scrolling down in the usual way and we have included a French activity, a music link to

enjoy and the continuation of our Frida Kahlo art self-portraits work. We will recommence our other

foundation subjects next week as this week is also a shorter one than usual.

Wishing you a lovely week

The Year 5 Team

Sleep somewhere different.

Do you have a tent you can put up in the garden? Can you build a

den/shelter and sleep outside? Can you find somewhere else in your

house to sleep? Try and spend a night somewhere different to your

own bed.

Can you make a leaf animal?

Find a selection of leaves, and twigs – maybe you can go for a walk in the woods

to collect them. Which animal can you make with what you have found?

Try and learn something new.

Pick up a new skill…. Can you juggle? Can you walk a tightrope? (or a line

on the floor!) Can you swim in the sea? Can you light a fire/BBQ (with

parental help)? Can you learn to do something outside that you have

never done before.

Obstacle course

Can you set up an obstacle course in your garden or even

on the beach? Time yourself doing your own course –

how fast can you complete it? Maybe you can test it on a

sibling or parent!

Sensory trail

Can you turn your obstacle course into a sensory trail? Or make a

new one? Blindfold yourself and see if you can follow a piece of

string around a trail – maybe going through some obstacles,

round trees or through buckets of water!

Rafting

Can you build a raft that will float a soft toy for 2 minutes! Test it in

the bath, in the sea or in a paddling pool!

Working from Home for Year 5 Target Practice

Can you make a target with an element of scoring on it? It could

be an archery type target or a series of bucket for example. Find

something to throw at your target (maybe a ball, bean bag or

water bomb) and see what everyone in your house can score.

Who is the best at throwing?

Water fight!

Pick a nice sunny day and have a good old fashioned water fight with sponges and cups of water

Geocaching.

With the help from an adult – can you go out and find geocaches that other people have hidden around the town. There are lots on Two-Tree Island, in Chalkwell Park, in Belfairs Woods and in Blenheim Park. There are plenty of free apps you can download to use.

Star Gazing.

Spend an evening outside your house and have a look at the stars. Which constellations can you find? A really good app which shows you the names and location of the stars, constellations and satellites is SkyView

English:

The accompanying English file entitled, “Holes week beginning- 29.6.2020” contains details of the English work for this week as we continue using Holes as our vehicle for learning. The digital copy of Holes can also be found here. This week, we revise features of familiar genres and explore the Western Genre. We also explore the historical context of the novel further. Reading Please continue to read Holes up to chapter 39 (2 to 3 chapters a day). If you find it tricky to sustain your concentration with several chapters, perhaps an adult or family member could read with you taking it in turns. Oxford Owl allows children to access books via a computer or tablet that are closely matched to the banded books they are familiar with reading in school. You will need to register for a free account to access the materials. When browsing the e library, to filter the books that match your child’s book band under the ‘levels’ drop down select ‘Book Band’ and then the number band your child is currently reading. https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/books/free-ebooks/ The following website has lots of stories too! https://www.youtube.com/user/puffinbooks1 Staff stories & Video Don’t forget to check out the staff reading stories on the school website in the video centre! New stories are being added all the time. Summary of content Lesson 1 Children look at examples of genres features for a variety of fiction texts. They then try to match some extracts to their genre. Lesson 2 Children explore the features of The Western genre and think about elements of Holes that might match with the features of this genre Lesson 3 Children learn about “The Wild West” by reading an explanation text and make notes using a mind map. They are then asked to prepare and give a talk on this subject Lesson 4 Children read some information about some infamous outlaws. They can then choose from a choice of tasks where they need to select key information from the information they have read and then evaluate and make judgements about it. Spellings Please have a try at learning to use these words. How many can you use during your home learning activities today either orally or in written form?

Purple Mash 2 do task History/English Last week, we learned about Martin Luther King Jr and drafted a,“ I have a Dream Poem”. We would love to read them and offer you some feedback, so your 2do task this week offers you a vehicle to do this on. Of course, if you have difficulty logging on to Purple Mash or would prefer to submit your poem via the class email, then that is absolutely fine as well. Maths This week, we will be following Week 9 Summer Term of the White Rose Maths Scheme of work. The core programme of lessons starts with 2 days on subtracting decimals followed by a day on multiplying decimals and a day on dividing decimals. For those pupils who are already confident with decimal subtraction, we have also included 2 days of alternative Maths lessons which revise tables and charts should you feel that this might be a more suitable option for your child. Lesson 1 = subtraction of decimals revision or alternative lesson 1 = tables and charts Lesson 2 = further subtraction of decimals revision or alternative lesson 2 = tables and charts Lesson 3 = Mutliplication of decimals Lesson 4 Division of decimals https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-5/ For children that require a little more support Why not use the flashback file on the Home Learning Page which has lots of examples of questions to revise previously taught content. We suggest 3 slides per day. For those children who may have further to travel before they are able to access the Year 5 curriculum, please look at work posted on alternative year groups pages as the content is roughly aligned to the same area of maths. For those children who would benefit from deeper challenge, we suggest working through the “Number, operations and calculation methods” worksheets found at the link below. There are also answers. There are a variety of levels of challenge offered. Be aware that there are also challenges for 14+ on this website which will cover content not taught in primary school. Please focus on worksheets labelled 11+.

https://nrich.maths.org/14104 Art/DT L.O. To create a self-portrait inspired by the work of Frida Kahlo This week, we will continue to create our Frida Kahlo style portraits. You might wish to use a photograph of yourself to work from. An example of how you might want to approach this can be seen at the link below. To use this method, you will need a sheet of clear plastic, a sharpie style pen, paper, card, brushes and paints. However, this is not the only approach you could take. Feel free to create your self-portrait in any media that suits you and use whatever materials you have available. We would love to see some examples of your work. https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=self+portrsits+in+the+style+of+frida+kahlo&qpvt=self+portrsits+in+the+style+of+frida+kahlo&view=detail&mid=D05ABC509C2B3A040C00D05ABC509C2B3A040C00&&FORM=VRDGAR&ru=%2Fvideos%2Fsearch%3Fq%3Dself%2Bportrsits%2Bin%2Bthe%2Bstyle%2Bof%2Bfrida%2Bkahlo%26qpvt%3Dself%2Bportrsits%2Bin%2Bthe%2Bstyle%2Bof%2Bfrida%2Bkahlo%26FORM%3DVDRE French L.O. To continue to become familiar with vocabulary for commonly used food ingredients

1. Watch the film about shopping for pizza ingredients ( there are some rather strange topping choices) https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/pizza-party-with-friends/z7ynvk7

2. Draw a picture of your own favourite fantasy pizza. Label your toppings. ( You could use an online bilingual dictionary such as GoogleTranslate to help you)

Wellbeing/PSHE You can find some ideas and information to support wellbeing on the PSHE information sheet on the Home learning page. Each week the national academy hosts an assembly in partnership with TES, available from 11am Thursday. These are opportunities for us all to come together, hear from some inspirational guest speakers, and to think and talk about wider things affecting us. https://classroom.thenational.academy/assemblies/
