Working Group on Intelligent Data Mining and Analysis (IDMA)
Intelligent Systems Subcommittee
2014 IEEE PES General Meeting
Monday, July 28, 2014, 12:00-13:00
Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center on the Potomac,
National Harbor, MD (Washington, DC Metro Area), USA
Room: Chesapeake 1
Chair: Zita Vale, Polytechnic of Porto
The meeting started at 12:00 PM with the following Agenda:
1 – Welcome and introduction of attendees
2 – Approval of the minutes of the 2013 IDMA Working Group Vancouver meeting
3 – Publications and panel session organization
4 – Working group website contents (www.sites.ieee.org/psace-idma)
5 – Study and use cases for data mining applications in power and energy systems Task
Force
6 – Discussion concerning other WG activities
7 – Adjournment.
1 – Welcome and introduction of attendees
The Chair welcomed everyone present in the meeting and each attendee introduced
him/herself. The attendance list is in annex; 24 people attended the meeting, fully or
partially; their signatures, affiliation and email contacts are registered in the attendance
list.
2 – Approval of the minutes of the IDMA Working Group meeting at IEEE PES GM
2013 in Vancouver
The minutes were approved unanimously.
3 – Publications and panel session organization
As previously decided, a proposal of a special issue on “Intelligent Data Mining and
Analysis Applications in Smart Grids” has been submitted to the IEEE Transactions on
Smart Grid. Zita Vale, Ganesh Kumar Venayagamoorthy, Germano Lambert-Torres and
Hiroyuki Mori are in charge of this task.
The panel “Data Mining for Power Market Regulatory Issues” proposed to the IEEE
PES GM 2014 has been accepted and will take place on Tuesday, July 29, 2014, from
1:00 PM to 03:00 PM in Room Magnolia 3 at Gaylord National Resort & Convention
Center on the Potomac, National Harbor, MD.
The organization of panels in future conferences has been discussed, considering the
decisions taken in previous meetings and the currently most relevant topics. It was

decided to propose a panel with the following tentative title “From smart metering and
PMU data to intelligent power and energy management” to be held in the scope of IEEE
PES GM 2015.
Other panel sessions concerning the following topics:
- Smart metering and big data
- Data quality, integration, and standards in smart grids
- Cibersecurity, privacy, and big data in smart grids
will be considered for other IEEE conferences, namely IEEE PES T&D, IEEE ISGT
and others in the area.
Cooperation with other conferences will also be targeted, namely ISAP and ASME (The
American Society of Mechanical Engineers) conference. These possibilities depend on
the working group members’ participation in those conferences and their availability to
organize the panel sessions.
The working group will intensify the efforts to ensure a good industrial contribution to
the panel sessions being organized. This is presently easier than before as IEEE PES
conferences are not requiring any longer that full papers are submitted by each of the
panellists. The working group will confirm if this rule applies to all the targeted
conferences.
4 – Working group website
Working group members are encouraged to contribute to the material published in the
working group webpage by sending suggestions of relevant information to be included
(please email them to [email protected] or to [email protected]).
Some topics to be considered:
- include a link to the working group webpage in the working group members personal
and/or institutional webpages
- include in the working group webpage new material such as: call for papers, dates for
relevant meetings and panel advertisement.
5 – Study and use cases for data mining applications in power and energy systems Task
Force
The task force has not been considered to start operating due to the on going
reorganization of the PES commitees, subcommittees, working groups and task forces.
Activities concerning use cases and data sets for data mining applications in power and
energy systems will continue to be undertaken in the scope of the IDMA working
group. The working group members are requested to contribute with new inputs to the
data sets published in the working group web site (http://sites.ieee.org/psace-idma/data-
sets/).
6 – Discussion concerning other WG activities
The reorganization of the PSACE subcommitees and their respective working groups
are likely to include the merging of IDMA working group and the CAMS task force on
IDMA WG Meeting, Vancouver, 2013 ANNEX – Page 3 of 3
“Big Data Driven Analytics for Smart Grid Operations” into a new working group,
directly under PSACE. Due to time restrictions, no more topics have been discussed.
7 – Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned at 01:00 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Zita Vale
