    Ell iot Lake is one of the s tron gest and most determin edcommunit ies in Ontario and Canada . Nothing demonstrates the resi l ience an d strongwil l of Ell iot Lakes residents more than th e events of the past year. Through al l of thetremendous chal lenges, we have remained undeterred as we continue to grow and worktogether toward a brighter future.

    I t has been more th an one year s ince the t ragic events of June 23, 2012. A lot hashappened since then to help regain an d maintain social , communit y and economicstrength in Ell iot Lake. These eff orts are the resul t of the t i reless and unyielding work ofboth private and government organiz at ions that have done nothing less than dem onstratea t rue example of p artnership and cooperat ion .

    Without the part icipat ion and sup port of residents l ike you who make up our beautifulcommunity, none of this could be possib le. I t s the people who l ive, work and play herethat make i t what i t is . This is why i t is im portant that you know whats happening i nthe community you cal l home, and how people l ike you have contr i buted to Ell iot Lakesprogress and well-being.

    REMEMBERING TOGE A special event dedica ted to the events of June 23rd , 2012

    was held. All were welc ome to share the day.

    The Ell iot Lake Centre for Developments Social and Wellness Committee

    presented Remembering Together held on June 23, 2013, 1:30pm, at the former AlgoCentre Mall entrance on the corner of Ontario and Saskatchewan Avenue. The service wasregretful ly relocated to the Lester B Pearson Civic Cen tre due to heavy rain tha t caused asafety concern when using electr ic sound equipment.

    Presented by the Social and Wellness Committee, Remembering Together wasan opportunity for the community of Ell iot Lake to gather and remember the events ofJune 23, 2012 that have become a milestone in the varied hi story of Ell iot Lake. In thisimportant t ransi t ion peri od, residents were able to tenderly remember the past whileimagining a hopeful future.

    The event included an opportunity for residen ts to wri te personal messages onenvironmental ly-fr i endly cards that were at tached to bal loons and released as a symboli cgesture of remembrance. Reverend Robert Gardn er, Minister at The Holy Trini ty UnitedChurch, acted as the Master of Ceremonies. An original s ong about the importance offr iendship and staying toget her in t imes of hardship and adversi ty by Cooper Rob insonclosed the event .

    All members of the community were invi ted to share the day. Regardless of where or howresidents chose to rememb er, the Social and Wellness Comm ittee offers thanks t o al l .

    This is an important support that can be provided to ensure that viable businesses can

    continue to operate during the transit ion period.

    ELIGIBLE RETAIL BUSINECOULD RECEIVE UP TO $Financial help is avai lable for e l igible retai l busi nesses

    while El l iot Lakes economy becomes more s table .

    Operat ing retai l businesses in Ell iot Lake who have been impacted by the closure of

    the Algo Centre Mall wil l now have access to assis tance from the East Algoma CommunityFutures Development Corporat ions loan fund, created to complement terms of the BusinessContinuity Stabi l izat ion Fund. Any new retai l business could be part of the 12 businesses thathavereopened elswhere af ter June 23, 2013.

    With the funds, el igible retai l businesses wil l now be able to receive an interest-free loan(up to two years) of $25 000 unti l the new Pearson Pl aza is open. The loan wil l enab le retai lbusinesses to diversify and regain strength while the n ew plaza is being const ructed. Thisis an important support that can b e provided to ensure that viable businesses can continueto operate during the t ransi t ion p eriod, said EACFDC General Man ager Shawn Heard.

    The fund wil l a lso be avai lable to retai l businesses that may not have been located in themall but have been losing business as a resul t of i ts closure. The applicat ion to the fundwil l be avai lable for el igible businesses who wish to apply. They wil l be reviewed by CFDCat that time.

    Revital izat ion Co-Ordinator.

    A downtown core is an important economic and communi ty driver in any ci ty, and Ell iotLake is no exception.

    Since 2010, Ell iot Lake is the only community in North ern Ontario to receive provincial fundingfor a Downtown Revital izat ion Program. T he program was created by the Ontario Ministry ofAgricul ture and Food (OMAF) / Ontario Min istry of Rural Affairs (OMRA) , and administered inNorthern Ontario by the Ministry of Northern Develop ment and Mines (MNDM). I t is proudl yimplemented by the Ell i ot Lake and Distr ict Chamber of Commerce in partnership w ith the Cityof Ell iot Lake, ELNOS, and supported in i t s early s tages by East Algoma CFDC.

    In order to build s tronger communit ies and foster greater aesthet i c appeal , DowntownRevital izat ion works in promoti ng economic growth, management and leade rship, market ing,and physical imp rovements of the downtown core.

    A committee consist ing of communi ty members from both the private and publ ic sector overseeDowntown Revital izat ion. In M ay 2013, they welcomed the new Downtown Revital i zat ionCoordinator, Lesley Kaross. Born-and-raised in E ll iot Lake and formerly t rained in PublicRelat ions, Lesley has created a 2013/2014 Downtown Implementat ion Pla n that includes new,excit ing downtown events as well as many ph ysical improvement projects to spruce up thedowntown. Memorable projects to date include a shop -local campaign, Ell iot Lake coupon b ookas well as both a chi ldrens banner project and mural p roject that came about through theDowntown Art Project .

    NUCLEAR WASTE MANAPROGRAMCommunity Liais on Committee in E l l iot Lake here to

    represent the comm unity when negot iat ing with NWMO.

    The Nuclear Waste Management Organizat ion ( NWMO) has conducted ini t ial

    screenings in the Ell iot Lake area to determine if i t is el igible for a possible s i te for a nuclearwaste deposi tory. According to NWMO, there are no condit ion s to date that would exclude Ell iotLake as a possible s i te .

    Should Ell iot Lake want to develop a potential s i te , NWMO wil l engage the community moreand more as part of an important process that ensures the comm unity ful ly demonstrates i tswil l ingness to host a reposi tory. Step 3 of the p rocess has already begun in March 2013, wherecommunit ies under consi derat ion wil l be sh ort- l is ted down to 2 or 3.

    An addit ional aspect to Step 3 is the form ing of the Community Liaison Commi ttee (CLC)consist ing of members of the commun ity and the City when negotiat ing with N WMO. Accordingto Mike Krizanac, Manager of Communi cat ions for the NWMO, The purpose of the CLC is not topromote the project ; their purpose is to ref lect the commun ity to the NWMO. The next s tep isto conduct feasibi l i ty s tudies focused on areas in col laborat ion with the community.

    The committee is a Committee of Council and consists of Chair Ken Bondy, Vice-Chair PierreVail lancourt , Mayor Rick Hamilton as ex-of f icio, City Council lor Ken Rast in , Ed Pearce, SonyaCloutier, Pat St ir l ing, Mark Robin son, Dr. Dave Matheson, Christ ian Giroux, and Larry Parker.

    If any member of the community has quest ions concerning the reposi tory or the Nuclear WasteManagement Organizat i on, they can bring them to the committee where they wil l b e directed toNWMO. Have your voice heard.

    In May 2013, Council of the City of Ell iot Lake accept ed the Economic Development and

    Diversif icat ion Strategy, a long-term p lan to enhance and reinforce Ell iot Lakes economy in anumber of sectors .

    Authored by urbanMetrics and BrookMcllroy, and commi ssioned by the EconomicDevelopment Advisory Committee ( s tanding-committee of the City of E ll iot Lake), thestrategy outl ines the growth and diversi ty of Ell i ot Lakes economy in 4 dist inct pi l lars:heal thcare, readiness and at t ract ion, cap aci ty building and cul tural heri tage. T he goalsrun the gamut of foster ing Ell iot Lakes exist i ng economic inst i tut ions, to methods of

    encouraging and engaging private in vestment . The strategy places the comm unity of Ell iotLake and i ts opinion s as the focus of i ts s tudy and key f indin gs. I t serves as a resourceand planning document and provid es an opportunity for the community to be involvedin planning the future of Ell iot Lake.

    Seven Goals of El l iot Lakes Economic D evelopment

    1. Shape the Inst i tut i ons of Tomorrow, TodayEstablish an Economic Development Corporat ion.

    2. Build a Network of NetworksThe coming together of numerous community cha mpions.

    Explore Ell iot Lake as a l iving l aboratory to complement i ts growing seniorpopulat ion.

    Northern Growth Plan and tradi t ional economic development factors .

    PEARSON PLAZA: TOENGINEERS ENSURESTRUCTURAL INTEGR

    Stores now confirming Pearson Plaza as their new home.

    Pearson Plaza has been on Ell iot Lakes radar s ince th e beginning of the 2013 year, and i ts

    opening wil l be a t remendous welcome for the Ell i ot Lake community.

    Not only wil l i t mean new opportunit ies for job s and economic growth for eager businessowners, i t wil l a lso be an epicenter for al l ages to gather, social ize and shop. In addit ion topublic t ransi t s tops, the mall wi l l feature a common area for residents to rest , enjoy a coffeeand converse with fr ien ds and family.

    On Monday, May 14th , a number of s tores a nd services were confirmed to be in the Pearson

    Plaza. Foodland, Investors Group, New Orleans Pi zza, Dail ies l l , Robins Donuts and Subwa ywil l f ind a new home in the brand new faci l i ty. Past merchants of the former mall may f in d anew home in Pearson Plaza as well . I t wil l a lso welcome relocat ing and expanding busines sesfrom Ell iot Lake and abroad, with more names to be announ ced soon.

    To ensure the safety of patrons and emp loyees, the City has h ired special engineers to assessthe rock face at the West s ide of the property. A compa ny from Sudbury has been hired todri l l and pin the exposed rock. According to Will ia m Ell iot t , Project Manager of the PearsonPlaza, the rock movemen t would be a safety con cern now and into the future, so i t mustbe properly addressed. T he process is expected to take up to 2 weeks and i s essential toprevent natural movement of the rock.

    S ince i t opened i ts d oors in October 2012, the E ll iot Lake Centre for Develop ment hasspearheaded and hosted a number of professiona l development and community outreachprojects in E ll iot Lake.

    Funded by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universi t ies , the Centre has impacted 61 jobssince October 2012, a very high number for s imilar centres in North ern Ontario. Partneringwith the East Algoma Community Futures Devel opment Corporat ion to provide business coun-sel l ing to both star t-up and expandi ng businesses in the region, entrepren eurs and seasonedbusiness people have access to assis tan ce completely free of charge.

    Due to i ts growing posi t ive impacts , the Centre may b e used by the province of Ontarioas a case s tudy to demonst rate what can be done b y a community in cr is is . The Centrewas founded under extraordinary circumstances and in record t ime. I ts posi t ivecontr ibutions to the community s ince i ts in ception stand out as powerful examples of whata community can accomplish and how they can recover in a t ime of extra ordinary hardship.Without the support of the community memb ers in Ell iot Lake who take advantage of theCentres counsel l ing, workshops and administrat ive services, none of this could be possible.
