870 million people were suffering from chronic undernourishment in 2010-2012.

Working to End Hunger in Australia

Hunger in Australia

• It’s a hidden problem

• 1 in 10 Australians experience food insecurity every year

• Half of them are children

• Not just the homeless and unemployed. Biggest group now seeking help is the working poor

• Charities don’t have enough food to meet the need – 65,000 people are turned away every month

What we believe

In this country of abundance, no one seeking food assistance should be turned away empty handed due to lack of food

What is Foodbank?

• Formed in 1992

• The largest hunger relief organisation in Australia

• Warehouses in every state capitals and 11 regional centres

• 107 staff

• 3,500 volunteers annually

We make a difference

700 food company partners

25.6 million kgs of food

34 Million meals

$180 million in charity saving

2,600 charities assisted

2012-13 figures

Disaster Resilience

• A first responder in times of disaster with the networks to get food where it’s needed

• Able to call on food industry assistance and then direct their donations to the right places

• Provide support for the weeks and months it takes for people to rebuild their lives

Where does the food come from?

• The entire food chain – Farmers – Manufacturers – Retailers and Wholesalers

• Every point of production – Pre production (e.g. ingredients) – Post production (e.g. extended runs) – Incorrect labels or damaged packaging – Surplus stock (e.g. close to expiry, slow

moving and deleted lines)

Our Challenge

• Double our food provision

• Increase donations of essential staples

• Increase the volumes of fresh foods

• Improve the nutritional profile of our supply

Collaborative Supply Program

• Proactively partner with food companies

• Seek donations of ingredients, production, packing and transport

• Produce essential items such as breakfast cereals, milk, pasta and sauce, canned and fresh fruit and vegetables

• $ donations help to complete the deal

Primary Produce Programs

• Fresh & Long Life Milk

• Grains

• Fruit & Vegetables

• Eggs

• Meat

Ways to help - fundraising

• For food (e.g. rice program)

• For programs (e.g. school breakfast program, cooking program)

• For infrastructure and equipment (e.g. trolleys, vehicles, warehouse racking)

• For resources (e.g. merchandise, marketing materials)

Ways to help - volunteering

• Lifeblood of Foodbank

• Skilled and unskilled help needed

• 100 volunteers needed a day nationally for warehouse operations

• Commitment is totally flexible

• Wide variety of opportunities (e.g. hamper packing, warehouse maintenance, fruit picking, school breakfast programs, events)

Ways to help – food drives

• Provides a direct connection

• Stand alone or as an addition to an event

• Themed drives – fish for Easter, hams for Christmas

• ‘Spring clean your pantry’

First Steps

• Invite us to come and speak at your club • Take a tour of the Foodbank warehouse

followed by either breakfast or dinner.

Thank You
