It’s part of a project run by the Centre multi-ressources de Lachine, an organization raising citizens’ awareness of the need to take care of our seniors. Working together

Committed to a vibrant community

Bike rickshaw project | $6,300All summer long, it’s impossible to miss: a bright green bike rickshaw weaving its way through the streets of Lachine. It’s part of a project run by the Centre multi-ressources de Lachine, an organization raising citizens’ awareness of the need to take care of our seniors. Out of this goal came this new method of local alternative transportation. The bike rickshaw is much appreciated by seniors and offered free of charge. During trips, rickshaw drivers can share information about resources, organizations and activities in Lachine throughout the summer.

A delivery van for GRAME | $4,200Local environmental group GRAME is known for its innovative and practical solutions to big environmental problems. GRAME is often involved in urban greening and other projects out in the community—and that requires a lot of travel. By getting their own van, GRAME is now able to get a lot more done. GRAME has deep roots in the Lachine community and really gets the most out of their new vehicle by occasionally lending it to other local groups!

We’re all committed to people and communitiesWe support the socio-economic vitality of our community through donations, sponsorships and the Community Development Fund (CDF). Members like you contribute to the CDF by voting to earmark part of your dividends for the fund during the caisse annual general meeting.

In 2019, we invested $113,240 to support a wide array of projects.

Co-op Week 2019Caisse Desjardins de Lachine organized a number of activities to celebrate Co-op Week, including 2 volunteer activities in support of a local organization. This year, directors, employees and managers helped with a neighbourhood cleanup and planting trees at the Jardin du Triangle-Fleuri with GRAME.

Cocktail de la coopérationOn April 10, 2019, the caisse held a celebration for 25 community organizations at the Cocktail de la coopération. We celebrated their perseverance and all the hard work they do to provide a wide range of activities and services for Lachine residents. The caisse is proud to support local organizations and projects that benefit our community.

#DesjardinsFoundation Prizes | $11,250The #DesjardinsFoundation Prizes help educators and youth workers carry out special projects for kids ranging in age from kindergarten through high school. In Lachine, 4 projects received funding:

• École Catherine-Soumillard: Ne sois pas statique, utilise moins de plastique (using less plastic) and Le carnaval des petits auteurs (young authors’ fair)

• École Philippe-Morin: School yard renovations• Carrefour Jeunesse-emploi Marquette: Le jardin de Passeport (garden)

This team isn’t afraid to roll up their sleeves!

Committed to health and healthy lifestyles

Centre de pédiatrie sociale communautaire de Lachine | $15,000On June 20, 2019, the Centre de pédiatrie sociale communautaire de Lachine officially opened. Local organizations, partners and contributors came out to celebrate the culmination of a community-wide effort.

The Marquette MNA Hockey Tournament benefiting the Centre de pédiatrie sociale communautaire de Lachine | $2,500 The caisse participated in the first Marquette MNA Hockey Tournament on Notre-Dame Street. It turned out to be a beautiful day for local residents and players. We had 2 teams representing our caisse: a team of employees and a team of members. Both teams fully enjoyed the friendly competition and played great. The tournament was a huge success, raising $5,750 for the Centre de pédiatrie sociale communautaire de Lachine.

Mardis cyclistes de Lachine | $5,000For the 12th year, the caisse sponsored Mardis cyclistes de Lachine. Held over 10 weeks, the competition features elite-level racers who take to their bikes to show off their speed on our city streets. Nearly 200 cyclists race each week, cheered on by tens of thousands of spectators.

Lachine Soccer Club | $5,000The caisse purchased jerseys to support the club’s recreational league. 600 soccer-loving kids ages 4 to 10 were kitted out for the summer. Great season, everyone!

As a sponsor of the Lachine Soccer Association, the caisse also contributed to the end-of-season festivities at Complexe sportif Dalbé-Viau on Saturday, August 17, 2019.

Lachine Bonneville Half-MarathonThe caisse was on site for the Lachine Bonneville Half-Marathon on August 18, 2019. Employees, managers and directors all helped make the event a success. The half marathon is a fundraiser for the Alzheimer Society of Montreal. While some of our employees skilfully managed the water station, others ran in the race!

Committed to academic success and helping kids stay in school

Scholarships – École secondaire Dalbé-Viau | $5,000Once again, the caisse showed its commitment to student success in Lachine by awarding scholarships to graduates of École secondaire Dalbé-Viau. These scholarships reward students for their hard work and provide a financial boost as they begin their post-secondary education.

Celebrations at the Centre Fernand-Laplaine, new home to the social pediatrics centre.

Committed to the financial literacy of young people

School caisseOur caisse also takes part in the school caisse program. Through this program, elementary school children learn the value of money, the cost of goods, and the importance of setting savings goals and meeting financial commitments. In 2019, students from four schools in our area participated in this program.

www.schoolcaisse.com has a wide range of activities, videos and games for young people, parents and teachers to help young people become independent, responsible and capable.

Preparing for the future with Personal Finance: I’m in ChargeThrough the Personal Finance: I’m in Charge® program, Desjardins provides guidance to young adults at a time in their life when they have to make a lot of financial decisions for the first time. One of the goals of this program is to help them become responsible consumers by preparing them to make informed decisions and choices that are right for them.

The program is offered in partnership with Carrefour jeunesse-emploi de Lachine.

Celebrating arts and culture

Festival de littérature jeunesse de Montréal | $2,000It’s mission accomplished for the organizers and volunteers behind the first ever children’s literature festival called Festival de littérature jeunesse de Montréal (FLJM), held at the Parc de la Marina d’Escale in Lachine. The FJLM was a big hit with families. With a wide choice of programming, book lovers of all kinds and fun activities, plenty of literary discoveries awaited!

At some of the workshops sponsored by Caisse Desjardins de Lachine, festivalgoers got to try their hand at designing comic strips, writing poems and doing a poetry slam.

Preparing the next generation of Desjardins leadersWe believe it’s important for the caisse’s board of directors to reflect the diversity of our members and our community. That’s why we’ve taken steps to boost the number of young people on the board. With the Young Intern Director Program, one young person between the ages of 18 and 30 can participate in meetings without necessarily being elected to the board. A number of young people have taken part in our Young Intern Director Program in recent years. This past year, we had the pleasure of having Myriam Dion attend our board meetings. If you’d like to get involved and have a say in the direction of our caisse, please let us know!

Children watch in rapt attention.
