Working with DesignersStuff I learned from being a designer and PM
Design is becoming more important every day, and there are difficul>es to both working with & without designers.
Think Sketch PrototypeDesign Production
Work together to set the vision and define problem
space & constraints
Lean on designers for design solu>ons, but help maintain focus by driving the vision
Help priori>ze/map design concepts based on the current focus of the product. PMs have the broad understanding designers don’t.
Early inves>ga>ons with dev team is always helpful.
Help enable the selected designs
Think Sketch PrototypeDesign Production
PMs I loved when I was a designer Clearly define * What to solve for, * Related condi>ons that maNer,* Any (Really) hard-‐set stakes in the ground.Otherwise, allow explora>ons & freedom
Words can be misleading Don’t be afraid to draw. Anything on paper can help your words.
Communica8ng your sketches Draw enough to convey your message, without designing for the designer
Communica8ng your sketches When you communicate the idea, What maNers is the “spirit” of the idea, rather than how it looks.
Communica8ng your sketches Same func>onality can be designed visually in so many different ways. Suggest ideas, but let the designers figure out which design works best.
Without a dedicated designer You don’t need to be pixel perfect.Easy to search for tools online Powerpoint can be used also (Storyboard).
Without a dedicated designer Helps to draX out the experience & ask for designer’s review
