Address people by their name and introduce yourself (don’t assume they will recognise your voice)
Avoid situations where there is competing noise
Speak naturally and clearly in your normal speaking voice
Continue to use body language as this affects the tole of your voice
Use accurate and specific language when giving directions
Relax and be yourself!
For overhead lighting use florescent lights Use blinds or tint the windows to control
glare Use general and direct lighting from a
lamp. Encourage the person to experiment with lighting
Maintain even lighting throughout the building
Use black text on white paper A sighted person can assist in reading
material Use upper and lower case letters for
better visibility – do not use capitals only. Do not underline words For typed print – Arial font style above 12
pts is recommended Magnifiers can be useful
High contrast colours such as black on white make objects easier to see
Tips: Use dark liquid in light cups and vice
versa Use plain colours rather that patterns Use contrast to assist with the office
environment eg. contrasting black stair railing on a white wall
Contrasting door knobs, doors, windows walls and floor coverings will assist
Large tactile room numbers and signs are helpful
Fully open or close doors Use matt finish paints on surfaces to reduce
glare Ensure things are well organised and stored
in consistent locations Reduce clutter Glass doors should be well marked Mark the edge of all steps and ramps with
high contrast paint or tape.
