Video Conference-Based Course on HIV/AIDS Prevention

Education to the Youths

Lessons Learned

Agustin KusumayatiFaculty of Public Health University of Indonesia

IntroductionDevelopment in Information and Communication Technology has allowed people and institutions to have more access to information and knowledge. E-learning enables teaching and learning process without face-to-face meeting between resource persons/facilitators and students/participants.Video Conferencing (VC) is one technology of e-learning that enables content delivery to several sites in real time simultaneously and interactively.A VC-based course in HIV/AIDS prevention education had been conducted by the Faculty of Public Health and GDLN University of Indonesia in collaboration with SOI-UNESCO in 2009.This presentation shares lessons learned from this VC-based course.

The Background• Geographical Condition:

– Population: ~200 millions – More than 500

universities nation wide– HE students: ~ 2 millions– Most top universities are

in Java• HIV/AIDS spreads in

almost all provinces in Indonesia with cumulative AIDS cases since Jan 1987 thru March 2010 = 20.564

• Almost half of the cases were young adults aged 20-29 years

The Network

DGHE of MONE has established• Global Development Learning Network (GDLN) Distance

Learning Centers (DLCs) in 4 Universities (UI, UNUD, UNHAS, UNRI)

• A nation-wide network: Indonesia Higher Education Network (INHERENT) in ~ 200 universities

Lessons Learned

From the Participants’ Evaluation

The topics are interestingResource persons/facilitators’ knowledge are goodInformation given are adequateDiscussions are good, but need more timeVideo conference sessions are good, but need technical improvementAllocated time is not enough.

About the Course ArrangementThe course needs to be registered as a credited course attract students to participate. The course is in English limit student participation on the other hand will allow the involvement and collaboration of resource persons from various countries and international organizations.VC allows real time discussion, but with more limited time needs off-line class discussion.Needs better arrangement as an e-learning on-line discussions, assignments, exams???

About the Technology

Technological improvement is needed. The course needs a “not-simple” technological support dependency to various technological aspects lower ability to reach students from the areas or universities without these supports.Another methods need to be identified increase the coverage of the program = increase the number of students with access to the information.

Thank you very much
