Southern Atelier Core ProgramOverviewProgram Director: Charles Miano

Atelier (atil-y) is a French word literally translated as workshop . In English, it is used to referto a working studio, typically an artist s studio. It can also be used as shorthand for the Atelier Method,a style of art instruction modeled after the private art studio schools of 15th-19th century Europe.

The Southern Atelier is part of an ever growing International Atelier artistic movement dedicated topromoting classical principles in contemporary art. The Atelier s primary intention is to provide a highlevel of artistic education in realist drawing and painting at an affordable cost to artists. The SouthernAtelier emphasizes the application of Old Master craftsmanship, working from life and the study of naturein the subtropical climate of the southern United States a geographical location allowing for a seriousconsideration of the sun s illumination. Our goal is to train and support artists associated with the SouthernRealist Movement and enhance the visual Fine arts of burgeoning Gulf Coast Florida communities. It isalso our endeavor to encourage and fortify 21st Century artists in their pursuit of skill, depth, purposeand truth.

Thank you to our generous sponsors...The Southern Atelier is the first atelier in the state of Florida to receive approval from the prestigious Art Renewal Center. Your Support playsa vital role in the success of The Southern Atelier’s commitment to provide a high level of artistic training at an affordable cost to students.

“An artist must always be in search of an absolute truth which can reveal a universal way of seeing.”- Miano

The curriculum of Southern Atelier advocates an in- depth study of nature leading the student to identify with fundamental artisticprinciples or truths. It is a well rounded and balanced course of study which incorporates the best aspects of traditional studiopractice with progressive innovation. The primary advantage of the course is the emphasis on learning to “see”. This is achievedby means of repetitive exercises designed to develop and enhance hand- eye coordination. Students immediately begin to studythe personification of the natural world working directly from the live model using comparative measurement. In addition toaccuracy and refinement, guidance toward imparting life, energy and feeling is also stressed. Naturally lit studio conditionshighlight instruction based on the sun’s exposure of color through prismatic light allowing for refined color study and a comprehensionof a vast array of light keys.

“A painter is only great when he is a master workman”- Alfred Stevens

It takes many years to develop ones eye as an artist. With that in mind the core program does not advocate a set number ofyears to study. Students are encouraged to become a part of the atelier family and grow foundational skills slowly and thoroughly.Artists are encouraged to stay as long as they possibly can and through consistent hard work acquire competence. A studentwho is unable to take advantage of the core program consistently with the added benefits of open studio sessions for instance, cannot expect to progress as fast as one who devotes more of their time in the studio. 5 to 10 years of full time study was notuncommon in the great academies and ateliers of the past, yielding some of history’s greatest artists. Leonardo da Vinci forexample, apprenticed over 10 years in Verroccio’s atelier . However, Southern Atelier’s Core Program allows for those withvarying circumstances and backgrounds to acquire the skills that they desire.

“It is austere and profound studies that make great painters…one lives all one’s life on this foundation and if it is lacking one will only be mediocre.” – J. L. Gerome

Southern Atelier is fully committed to giving students the training they need for life as a painter. By studying the fundamentalprinciples of painting independently, progressing students are given the opportunity to build their confidence as they master eachprogressing stage. The program seeks to impart the knowledge at the right time when a student is capable of fully grasping it.The culmination of this approach is skilled application of all the artistic truths inherent in our craft resulting in outer and innerharmony, naturalness and spontaneity.

Charles Miano’s apprentices have access tothe galleries of the John and Mable RinglingMuseum of Art where artists spend monthscopying real Old Master paintings and ancientstatuary. Open palette paintingalso allows artists to learn to bridge colornotes and create pictorial color vibration.Demons are frequent as well as discussionsand critiques.

Red Chalk DrawingThe use of Chalk has its roots in prehistoric times, yet it wasn’t until the Renaissancethat it came into its own. In 16th and 17th century Italy. Great masters such as Leonardo,Michelangelo and Raphael to Pontormo and Carracci popularized the poetic power ofthe medium.Today, advanced students of SA have the opportunity to study this expressive yetchallenging medium just as in the days of the Renaissance and Baroque guilds. Regularclasses and Chalk drawing workshops are held annually.

The principle of the hierarchy of forms is stressed, small forms take their place within medium and mediumemerge from large forms and so on. The main model forthe class would be my clay piece rather than a life modelas the goal is learning the forms in a clear diagrammaticand universal manner. The goal is not a portrait but thecomprehension of the structural analysis of the forms thatlead to portraits.
