Civility Training: Sensitivity Skills in a Diverse Workplace

Do your employees respect one another, your customers and your company as a whole? No matter how hard you try to enforce a positive workplace culture, it can all be undone in a moment by one rogue tweet, email, or comment across the water cooler.

A culture of workplace civility and respect—one in which harassment is simply not tolerated—must come from the top. But enforcement can be difficult. And walking the tightrope between what you should regulate and what you cannot regulate can perplex even the savviest HR professionals and Managers. But help is here.

With insight, understanding, and skill development participants can learn to value differences as opportunities and strengths. And bottom line a culture of trust and respect enhances team efforts and goal attainment.

Learning Objectives

• Gain an awareness of the impact of actions upon others, the organization, and the individual.

• Understand the difference between behaviors that are appropriate, inappropriate, and perhaps illegal.

• Understand what constitutes cultural competence and cultural incompetence.

• Improve skills in communicating across cultures.• Know the action steps needed to value others in the

workplace.

Communication for a Diverse Workforce

Differences in culture, generation, style, race, sex and religion all add up to miscommunication.

This session is designed to increase awareness and understanding of differences among people so that we can communicate better; it is critical to organizational success. Learning to step into each others’ shoes establishes a common ground, encourages dialogue, and creates a shared understanding. Identifying barriers, building strategies, and acquiring the “know-how” to interact effectively across differences is the focus of this session.

Learning Objectives

• Define what being “different” means and its impact on communication

• Understand the benefits of a culturally diverse workplace

• Identify the 6 Dimensions of Diversity• Observe a “real-to-life” case study of a collaborative

multi-cultural society• Understand where an individual’s values fit in the

equation of differences• Assess communication styles in order to better

understand ourselves & others• Explore generational differences that impact our

ability to communicate• Identify strategies that help us relate to people who

are different than ourselves

Communicating with Diplomacy

Those who have experienced foot-in-mouth syndrome know it! Speaking when you shouldn’t, saying what should be left unsaid, or framing things in a way that is inappropriate are barriers for career success.

Yet, communicating with tact is truly an art, science and discipline. Knowing when and when not to say something is only a starting point. The choice of words, timing, tone and volume are all critical factors as well. To be effective when communicating takes great self-awareness, training, and the know-how to apply skills and techniques in work and life situations.

During this session we will look at word choice, nonverbal cues and more. Those attending will self-assess their own approach: What’s working? What’s not? The goal is to learn how to navigate work situations, build a high-quality personal brand, increase credibility, and improve the chance for greater career success.

Learning Objectives:

• Examine perception; yours as well as those around you, and how it impacts communicating

• Explore key techniques to harness diplomacy and tact to build credibility

• Recognize how stress affects what you say and do• Identify the “Top 5 Skills” for effective

communication• Uncover roadblocks that get in the way of

communicating with tact, and strategize techniques to overcome barriers

• Incorporate good listening skills into the mix• Build an Action Plan to incorporate new skills

back at work

The Strategic Leader

This 2-day, strategic-level leadership program is designed to inspire and engage, and give organizational leaders a chance to gain insights into their own personal development needs to meet whatever leadership challenges lie ahead for themselves, their executive teams, and their organizations.

Leadership is an Observable, Learnable Set of Practices, Not a Gene.

Perfect for an executive team, this program is based on 30 years of research and data from Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, authors of The Leadership Challenge®. By gathering evidence focused on exactly what great leaders actually do, their findings identify and validate 5 Practices that are critical for leaders to be successful.

Makes a Difference in How Leaders Impact Their Organizations

Participants in this program will work to identify specific actions for improving the Five Practices and for communicating that plan with their team or manager. With a plan of action in hand for taking the key learnings from the workshop back to the workplace, participants are prepared to implement these new leadership practices back on the job and apply them to current organizational challenges.

ADA – Accommodation Procedures and Compliance Training

From its inception, the ADA was intended “to assure equality of opportunity, full participation, independent living, and economic self-sufficiency for individuals with disabilities.” Unfortunately, what this has meant for employers is a very complex law, with rules that are confusing and often misunderstood.

Plus, the law has undergone significant changes in the 25 years since it was signed into law. Did you know, for example, that in many instances the ADA will require that you provide leave to an employee who requests it as a “reasonable accommodation”? (which is why the ADA has often been called “the FMLA for small employers”). Employers also often overlook that they too have rights under the ADA, and that the employee also has various obligations under the law.

When and How to Investigate Sexual Harassment Claims

In today’s workplace, it is critically important to recognize when to investigate a sexual harassment allegation and equally important to understand how to properly conduct a workplace investigation. Having conducted a proper investigation at the right time is often crucial to an employer’s ability to defend against regulatory and civil liability, and failure to promptly and properly investigate a particular complaint can waive an employer’s legal defense, or significantly undermine its legal position in litigation. Conducting effective workplace investigations can also help an employer improve employee morale, increase productivity (when coupled with appropriate disciplinary action), reduce turnover rates, and improve organizational culture by ending inappropriate conduct on a company-wide level.

In this workshop you will solidify your understanding of:

• When to investigate an allegation of sexual harassment; and

• How to investigate allegations of workplace misconduct, including how to determine: • Whether allegations of misconduct have merit; • Who was involved in the misconduct; • Disciplinary or other measures that should be

taken against the alleged perpetrators to prevent recurrence and limit employer liability; and

• Preventative steps to avoid future similar incidents.

Why Attend

The EEOC specifically recommends that workplace investigations be performed by “well-trained, objective, and neutral investigators.” In light of this, and considering that an improperly conducted investigation

can exacerbate the underlying problem being investigated and, in some instances, create additional liability for the company, it is critical for your company to understand the various legal issues associated with conducting an investigation.

Course Overview/Learning Objectives

This workshop will cover the following topics:

1. How to Determine When to Investigate Workplace Conduct

2. Understanding the EEOC’s Guidelines for Effective Workplace Investigations

3. A Step-by-Step Guide on How to Conduct a Workplace Investigation, including:

• Developing your investigation plan; • Collecting and analyzing evidence;• Conducting witness interviews; and• Making credibility determinations;• Making factual determinations;• Documenting your investigation efforts;• Drafting the your investigation report;• Determining the response;• Communicating the outcome; and• Monitoring future conduct.

Train-the-Trainer

Know what you’re talking about, but not sure how to convey it to others?

Even if you’ve never spoken in front of a room full of trainees you can still learn to lead an effective training program in, “Train-the-Trainer”, a one-day, interactive workshop.

Designed for in-house trainers and leaders or supervisors with training responsibilities, this workshop will teach you to create clear, measurable learning objectives and write and deliver training content. You’ll review principles of adult learning, learn group facilitation and on-the-job training methods, and develop a task analysis. At the end of the session, you’ll be prepared to deliver effective employee training, no matter what the topic.

• Identify performance gaps and training needs• Write clear, measurable learning objectives• Develop a task analysis from a job description • Conduct training effectively from preparation to

the actual delivery• Write and deliver training content using adult
