SOY MORATORIUM – MONITORING
DATA ACCUMULATED
In the 2013-2014 crop soybeans have been identified on 47,028 hectares of
accumulated deforestation since the start of the Soy Moratorium.
These 47,028 hectares in non-conformity with the Soy Moratorium correspond to 0.8%
of the deforestation in the states of Mato Grosso, Pará and Rondônia, in that part of
their territory that lies within the Amazon Biome.

PUBLIC RECOGNITION
“The Soy Moratorium and negotiations with the meat sector are programmes that could
serve as models for other countries”. Kumi Naidoo, Greenpeace Global Executive Director,
quoted in Valor Econômico, 9th March 2010
“Those who thought the Moratorium would not last will lose money and market. The soy
industry is setting the example for respecting the forest and the consumers”. Paulo Adário,
Greenpeace Diretor
“Through INPE’s monitoring results, one can understand the problem’s dimension and
complexity. We can no longer state that new deforestation in the Amazon Biome is
associated with soybeans”. Izabella Teixeira, Minister of the Environment
![Page 24: Workshop Produção sustentável de óleos vegetais: sustainable soy production in brazil](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022051710/5a6dbd877f8b9ad4678b4691/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)

RECOGNITION BY INTERNATIONAL CLIENTS
The European Soy Customer Group – AHOLD, ASDA, Carrefour, Co-
operative, Kraft, Marks & Spencer, McDonald’s, Nutreco, Ritter-Sport,
Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Wal-Mart – applauds another year of positive
progress by the Soy Task Force:
“We see the Moratorium as a powerful and essential tool to enable all of us
to achieve our ultimate goal of sustainable sourcing. We encourage other
companies and other sectors to engage in similar efforts to ensure that the
Amazon is not cleared for the production of any commodity. In particular,
we would like to acknowledge the further improvement of the mapping and
monitoring system, now supported by the involvement of National Institute
of Space Research (INPE) in Brazil.”
