Hello Members,

I’m conscious of the fact that I have only produced one newsletter this year so I thought I’d

better do a brief round-up of what the Club has been up to during the past 12 months.

When you see it all written down and covering 14 pages it looks a lot—and it is!

Compared to some clubs we are very active but then you would expect that with over 100

members.

MEMBERSHIP FACTS AND FIGURES

We have had 36 new members join during 2016 and have finished the year with 120

members:

7 Life members, 100 Corporate members, 12 Junior members and 1 Associate

member.

Licence category: 50 Full licencees, 20 Intermediate licencees, 39 Foundation

licencees, 11 SWLs)

17% of the membership is female

Sadly 6 members became Silent Key : Roy Frettsome GT4WPW, Richard ‘Ziggy’

Hudson G1ZIG , Mick Jordan G7NKE, Ray Mallender G1UPL , Aidan Ascroft

2E0LTV and Chris Ives 2E0CAG.

One of the activities which gets a good number of members participating is Contesting and we have done really well this year. 2016 has seen the club improve or maintain its place on all bands in UKAC VHF/UHF contests with some marvellous individual performances as well.

On 6m we were in 10th place in 2015 and have improved to 4th place out of 78 clubs in 2016, having also given the big contest groups a scare in the early part of the year when we held 1st place. Congratulations to Steve, G0EAK, 1st place, John, 2E0DXK, 4th place and Leading Intermediate Licence holder, and Tony, M6KTP, 5th place and Leading Foundation Licence holder, all in the low power (10 Watts) section.

On 4m, we finished in 6th place in 2015, and maintained this in 2016 out of 59 clubs. Congratulations to Steve, G0EAK, 1st place, John, 2E0DXK, 3rd place and Leading Intermediate Licence holder, and Tony, M6KTP, 5th place and Leading Foundation Licence holder, all in the low power (4 Watts) section.

On 2m, we held 10th place in 2015 and improved to 6th place in 2016 out of 105 clubs.

Page 3: Worksop Amateur Radio Society - G3RCWg3rcw.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/2016-the-year-in-review.pdfM0HOB 70 70 697 G4WZI 47 47 709 70362 15577 63643 55044 14355 218,981 ... ontesting

Congratulations to John, 2E0DXK, Leading Intermediate Licence holder and Tony, M6KTP, Leading Foundation Licence holder, both in the low power (10 Watts) section. Both John and Tony will need to collect trophies at the RSGB Convention in October 2017, the first time anybody from Worksop ARS has collected a trophy – well done to both of you.

On 70cm, we finished in 11th place in 2015 and improved to 7th place in 2016 out of 79 clubs. Congratulations again to John, 2E0DXK, Leading Intermediate Licence holder and Tony, M6KTP, Leading Foundation Licence holder, both in the low power (10 Watts) section.

On 23cm, we finished in 19th place in 2015 and improved to 14th place in 2016 out of 55 clubs.

In the overall placings we finished in 11th place in 2015 and improved to 7th place in 2016 out of 120 clubs. Congratulations to Tony, M6KTP for Leading Foundation Licence holder, having finished in 38th place overall out of a total of 739 individual entrants. Congratulations also to Steve, G0EAK, for finishing in 10th place overall, narrowly missing out to M0RKX for leading portable station.

Full details at http://www.rsgbcc.org/cgi-bin//vhfresults.pl?ContestSeries=Overall%20UKAC&year=2016

During the year 34 members supported the club by submitting logs and there were other members who supported the contesting by logging on Tuesday nights at the club, going out portable with other members or loaning equipment etc. so a big thank you to everybody who supported the contesting in some way.

The full list of members who submitted logs together with their contribution to the club score and their overall placing in the RSGB table is shown overleaf…...

Congratulations to Steve, G0EAK for heading the table for the second successive year and therefore he will retain the G0BYQ Cup. Competition is hotting up though from John, 2E0DXK and Tony, M6KTP so 2017 is likely to see a new holder of the G0BYQ Cup.

On 6m, 4m and 2m we were the highest placed local radio club, only being beaten by the large contest groups and on 70cm we narrowly missed out to Bolton who were just one place above us for leading local radio club. In 2017 there will be separate leagues for contest groups and local radio clubs which should benefit Worksop ARS.

Page 4: Worksop Amateur Radio Society - G3RCWg3rcw.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/2016-the-year-in-review.pdfM0HOB 70 70 697 G4WZI 47 47 709 70362 15577 63643 55044 14355 218,981 ... ontesting

Unfortunately 2017 will see some more changes to UKAC activity which will not benefit Worksop ARS. The 6m and 4m contests are moving to the second and third Thursday of each month so we are not likely to be as competitive in 2017, with fewer members able to commit to operating twice a week. However, there may be some members who were unable to participate on a Tuesday evening that may be able to participate on a Thursday evening – if this is you and you need any help with equipment, aerials or logging etc. then please speak to Martin, M0ZMF, or Steve, G0EAK. We’d love to have you as part of the team!

In January we were pleased to welcome 4 new members to the Club: Matt Bradbury, 2E0GMV, Paul Jones 2E0BPB, Ken Parker M6KJP and Brendan Cartwright SWL,

An overhaul of the Club’s database was begun and we introduced the Paypal facility for paying Membership subscriptions. At the beginning of this year we had 107 members (36 Foundation, 19 Intermediate and 45 Full licencees and 7 SWLs); Ladies made up 15% of the membership ; 7% of the membership was aged under 26; 28% of members were also RSGB members

John Whitworth 2E0DXK received the monthly award for good radio operation and etiquette, for January 2016

7 members who passed their Intermediate exam in December got their new call signs: (l to r): Aidan Ascroft (2E0LTV), Kevin Davies (2E0VKB), Shaun Button (2E0SNS), Chris Button (2E0ZCB), Matt Bradbury (2E0GMV), John Whitworth (2E0DXK) and Lewis Sadler (2E0YZV)

UKAC 2016

On the contesting front, having finished 2015 in style we started 2016 with a bang. Steve, G0EAK, was laid up for 3 weeks in January so everybody else rallied around, including members like Ziggy (I hate contests) G1ZIG, enticed by a new production delta beam, Chuck G0PGA on his long wire and Dave, M0IKE who submitted logs for 6m – and we achieved First place! Can we entice you to join in for 2017?

6th October: 70cm antenna construction night. An enjoyable night with

something useful at the end of it!

JOTA WEEKEND 14th to 16th October. On Saturday, 15th October, we had the

pleasure of welcoming Beavers, Cubs and Scouts from Bassetlaw District Scout

Association to our Clubhouse to help them celebrate Jamboree on the Air (JOTA)

2016. Using our radio equipment the youngsters had a chance to talk to folk in

various parts of the UK and into Europe, including Sweden, Austria, Italy, Brittany,

Czech Republic and Spain. They also did a little bit of direction finding outside,

learned some Morse code and how to find beacons using beam antennas…. Most

definitely some future young amateurs in the making!

27th October—By popular demand, we welcomed Paul Redfern 2E1HYI and Terry

Depledge 2E1FRW from the Retford Repeater Group for a talk on DMR radio.

Vickers M0AKB.

3rd November: we showed a new video presentation, recently released by the RSGB

Propagation Committee which looked at the physics behind different VHF, UHF and

microwave propagation modes. It also looked at tropospheric enhancements and

ducting, sporadic E, aurora, meteor scatter, rain scatter and much more. This was

followed by an interesting Q & A Skype session with Jim Bacon G3YLA ( some of you

may remember him as a BBC weatherman many moons ago). A first for the Club and

for Jim and it was nice to have our own meteorologist for an hour!

17th November: We had a fascinating

presentation ’Pigs can fly’ by Andrew Garratt

M0NRD, which was all about high altitude balloons

and the tracking systems and cameras used. Plus

there was a ‘live’ demo and details of a couple of

flights Andrew was involved with..
