A challenging year for air transport with below trend growth forpassenger volumes and declining cargo volumes in 2019

Passenger demand slowed but remained solidDemand for air passenger services remained solid in 2019, with industry-wide revenue passenger kilometres (RPKs)increasing by 4.2%. This represented a sizeable slowdown from the strong pace of 7.3% recorded in 2018.

In 2019, RPK growth fell below the long-run industry average growth rate (which we estimate to be in the order of5¼–5½%) for the first time in seven years. Air travel demand in 2019 was impacted by a softer (but still supportive) globaleconomic backdrop and weaker business confidence amidst international trade tensions, including between the US andChina.

World GDP growth slipped from 3% in 2018 to 2½% last year and the RPK/GDP multiplier fell to below its long-run medianlevel for the first time since 2009.

The China domestic market once again added the most passengerjourneys…Despite the moderation in growth, there were more than 3.9 billion origin-destination (O-D) passenger journeys worldwidein 2019.

Among them, domestic routes within China again provided the largest incremental increase in passenger trips comparedto 2018. This market alone added a little more than 30 million journeys in the year, at a brisk annual growth rate of 5.8%.The United States domestic market followed with almost 27 million more passenger journeys in 2019, growing at a robust4.6% pace for the year.

Vietnam contributed 4.7m additional domestic passenger journeys in 2019, increasing at a strong 16.4% pace and rankingit the third largest contributor. Among the top 10 ranking, Vietnam’s impressive growth performance was outpaced by bothNigeria (48%) – which moves into the ranking for the first time – and Colombia (19%).

After double-digit growth over a number of years, the India domestic market was impacted by the demise of Jet Airways in2019 which contributed to a sharp growth slowdown, to just 2.7% in 2019. Even so, India still added more than 3 millionadditional passenger journeys last year.

…but the US domestic passenger market remained the world’slargestAlthough China’s domestic market added the most passenger journeys in 2019 compared with 2018, the US domesticmarket remains the world’s largest single O-D air travel market.

More than 610 million passenger journeys were undertaken in the US domestic market in 2019. China continues to closethe gap, ranking a close second, with 550 million passenger journeys for the year. These two markets are followed atsome distance by India, with 125 million journeys in 2019.

Unsurprisingly, domestic markets dominated the rankings. The Spain-UK combination was the first international countrypairing, at number 10. The top 12 markets accounted for almost half of the total number of O-D passenger journeys in2019.

  • World Air Transport Statistics

Air cargo volumes declined in 2019Air cargo volumes began to decline in Q4 2018, and this weakness was carried through 2019, resulting in the worstperformance for the air cargo segment since the global financial crisis a decade earlier, in 2009. Not all air freight sectorswere equally affected, however, with e-commerce and pharmaceuticals, for example, continuing to perform well.

In 2019, cargo tonne kilometres (CTKs) contracted by a sizeable 3.2% year-on-year, the first negative outturn since 2012.Global trade tensions created strong headwinds for the industry over the course of the year and came in addition to abroad-based and not entirely unrelated slowdown in global economic activity, including in several major manufacturing-intensive economies. Global goods trade growth slowed from 3.7% in 2018 to just 0.9% in 2019 (also the weakestperformance since 2009).

Towards the end of the year, business conditions for the air cargo market showed some signs of stabilization supported bythe US-China trade war truce, which included the signing of the so-called phase 1 agreement.

  • Industry Economic Analysis

Regional differences were evident in passenger and particularlycargo outcomesThe mixed fortunes of the air passenger and cargo markets at the global level were also reflected in outcomes at theregional level. Passenger market results showed less regional variation than cargo on this occasion.

With the exception of the Middle East, the air passenger growth performance (in RPK terms) was relatively consistentacross the regions in 2019, ranging between 3.9% (North America) and 4.8% (Asia Pacific). For the Middle East carriers,2019 was a challenging year in many respects. Falling business confidence in parts of the region, combined with somekey airlines going through a process of structural change after a sustained period of strong growth, along with geopoliticaltensions all weighed on industry outcomes, delivering modest RPK growth of 2.3% for the year. Having said that, MiddleEast passenger volumes showed a clear improvement in the second half of the year, supported by more robust growth toand from Asia and Europe.

The air cargo growth performance across the regions was more mixed. Only the African carriers saw their CTKs increasecompared to 2018, at a strong rate of 7.4%. Trade and investment flows from Asia in particular, helped to underpin thisimpressive growth performance. In contrast, airlines based in Asia Pacific and in the Middle East were the weakestperformers in 2019, with volumes falling by 5.6% and 4.6%, respectively. With the US-China trade tensions being animportant driver of air cargo developments at the global level, it is little surprise that the Asia Pacific market – a key globalmanufacturing and distribution hub – was heavily impacted in 2019.

The passenger load factor achieved a new record high in 2019For the air passenger market, available seat kilometres (ASK) increased by a moderate 3.4% globally in 2019 comparedwith 2018, the slowest pace since 2009. The grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft played a role in this subduedindustry-wide capacity growth outcome. With the increase in demand (RPKs up 4.2%) outpacing that of capacity, thepassenger load factor (PLF) increased by around ½ of a percentage point to 82.6% - the eighth consecutive year ofincrease and a new record high level. The PLF has risen around 10 percentage points over the past 15 years.

The contrasting fortunes for air cargo are clear. Against the weakness in air cargo demand (CTKs down 3.2% in 2019),airlines also sought to limit the pace of capacity increase. However, available cargo tonne kilometres (ACTKs) stillincreased by 2.2% year on year, a pace that was some 5.4 percentage points faster than the rate of demand growth. As aconsequence, the cargo load factor (CLF) declined substantially in 2019, by around 2.5 percentage points, registering oneof its weakest outcomes in recent years and returning to levels of around that of the global financial crisis.

Oil prices were relatively steady for much of 2019, at a moderatelevelThe jet fuel price began 2019 trading at roughly US$75.50 a barrel, following a significant fall in Autumn 2018. The fuelprice initially tracked upwards, increasing by more than 10% between January and May, to reach its year-high level ofaround $84 per barrel in May 2019. This upward price trend was supported by oil supply cuts from the OPEC group ofproducing nations.

From May to September, however, fuel prices oscillated around a general trend level of $80 per barrel, amidst acombination of slowing global economic activity and geopolitical tensions in the Persian Gulf, which included the missileattack on the Saudi oil processing facilities at Abqaiq and Khurais. During the latter part of the year, oil and jet fuel pricesremained relatively steady, as weaker demand – reflecting the slowdown in global economic activity – was broadlybalanced by production cuts. Jet fuel prices ended the year at just above $76/bbl., little changed from their Januaryopening level.

The yearly average jet fuel price was a little below around $80/bbl., down from an average that exceeded $86 in 2018 and, overall, a moderate level in comparison to the past 15 years.

Achieved load factor eased slightly but remained solidly above thebreakeven levelThe key drivers of airline costs – such as oil prices, interest rates and labor costs – were broadly stable in 2019. In turn, this underpinned an essentially unchanged estimate for the industry-wide breakeven load factor, at 65.9% compared to66% in 2018.

As discussed above, a record high passenger load factor in 2019 was countered by a sharp decline in the cargo loadfactor. As a result, the combined achieved load factor – measured as a share of available tonne kilometres (ATKs) –eased by around 1/2pp to 69.4%.

However, this did not prevent airlines from maintaining a solid gap above the level required for financial breakeven. Thegap between the breakeven and achieved load factors is driving profitability and returns and was again a criticalcontributor to the industry’s overall financial performance in 2019.

While financial performance was robust, returns remained below theoverall cost of capitalThe global airline industry experienced another year of robust financial outcomes in 2019. Our latest estimate is thatairlines generated an industry-wide net post-tax profit of $25.9 billion last year, with an operating (EBIT) margin of 5.1%.Both of these outcomes are modestly lower than those recorded in 2018 and reflect the more difficult businessenvironment for the industry, particularly the slowdown in demand.

Despite moderating for a fourth consecutive year following its peak in 2015, the industry-wide return on invested capital(ROIC) remained relatively elevated in historical terms, at 5.7%. The cost of capital also eased in 2019, returning to its2017 level, and remained above the level of ROIC.

Creating value for investors on a more sustainable basis than the industry has managed to do historically will be anincreasingly crucial element in attracting the capital necessary to fund fleet renewal and replacement in the years ahead.

2019 financial performance was varied across the regionsAt the global level, the industry operating (EBIT) margin moderated in 2019, to an estimated 5.1% of revenues from 5.7%in 2018.

Across regions, the financial performance remained mixed in 2019. North American airlines continued to lead the way, delivering an operating margin of almost 10% in 2019, up around 1/2pp on the previous year.

Similar to the pattern observed in 2018, airlines in Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America also generated moderateprofitability outcomes, with an operating margin in the range 3.5-4.7%. Once again in 2019, airlines in both the Middle Eastand in Africa faced more challenging operating environments; with the former generating a substantially negative operatingmargin overall (-5.2%) on this occasion.

North America and Latin America were the only regions where the industry operating margin improved in 2019 comparedwith 2018.

On a per passenger basis, the airline industry is a high-volume, low-margin business. Examining net profits on a perpassenger basis highlights this and provides an alternative perspective on regional airline profitability. By this measure, theindustry generated a modest US$5.70 net profit per passenger in 2019.

Regionally, performance again varied, with the North American carriers easily the strongest performers, earning anestimated $16.81 per passenger. Airlines in Europe followed at some distance, generating moderate profits of $5.21 perpassenger. Airlines in the Asia Pacific were the only other region to be profitable, with profit of a little less than $3 perpassenger.

At the other end of the spectrum, airlines in the Middle East lost, on average, $6.84 for every passenger they carried in2019. Smaller losses were also incurred in both Latin America ($1.32) and Africa ($2.13), confirming the ongoingchallenging operating environment for the air transport industry in these regions.

Air transport connected more cities at lower cost in 2019…In 2019, airlines continued to increase the number of city-pair routes operated globally. More than 22,000 unique city pairsare now regularly serviced by airlines. This is an increase of almost 1,000 over the number of city-pair connections in2018. At the same time, the inflation adjusted (i.e. real) cost of air travel declined by a further 2.3% in 2019.

The doubling in air connectivity over the past two decades, in conjunction with the halving of the cost of air travel over thesame period has secured aviation’s position as ‘the business of freedom’ and has led to the democratization of air travel;more people are now able to fly more often, to more destinations, all around the world.

…supporting economic growth and prosperity through tourism andtradeAir transport is central to world tourism and trade. Tourists traveling internationally by air are estimated to have spentabout $900 billion in 2019, a solid increase of around 7% over 2018. The additional number of city-pair connections andthe lower cost of air transport also boosts trade in goods and services and heightens foreign direct investment and otherimportant economic flows.

Air transport accounts for only a small proportion, less than 1%, of world trade by volume but for a much larger share byvalue, at about 35%. In 2019, the value of goods carried by air is estimated to have been slightly above $6.7 trillion, amodest decline on the outcome for 2018, primarily reflecting the impact of the global trade tensions on world trade (and aircargo) volumes.

Air travel was more accessible – for more people – than ever beforeWorldwide air passenger numbers continued to rise in 2019, moving beyond 4.5 billion passenger journeys, on a flightsegment basis. Connecting cities directly cuts the cost of air transport by saving time for shippers and travelers. Combinedwith cheaper airfares, this enables more people to fly more often. In 2000, the average citizen flew just once every44 months. In 2019, the time between passenger trips had more than halved, to just 20 months.

  • Section 1—Demand for AirTransport 2019This section outlines, in summary, traffic and capacity trends of the global air transport industry. The operational statisticsare presented for international, domestic, and scheduled operations, worldwide and by region. Traffic flow data by routearea is provided in this section, along with passenger traffic by cabin class. IATA's latest forecasts for the industry arepresented last.

The data presented in the subsections 1.1 to 1.5 are sourced directly from airlines through direct data submission, andextrapolated in order to reflect the entire industry. The data refer to total scheduled traffic, including low–costs, non–IATAmember airlines, dedicated cargo carriers, regional carriers, etc. Only non–scheduled (or “charter”) traffic that does nothave pre–published schedules is not covered.

Airline traffic data are compiled based on on–flight origin–destination counting, which–in the case of passengertraffic–roughly compares to the amount of boarding passes issued. This means that passengers making intermediateconnections will be at least counted twice. The equivalent applies to freight and mail data.

Passengers, freight and mail are counted by the airline that operates the flight, which operation is identified by a uniquecall–sign that is used for air traffic control purposes, even though another airline might have sold the ticket or airway bill(for example in the case of code–shared operations).

    WATS 2020

Section 2—Rankings 2019The rankings section contains a list of the top 200 airlines (passenger traffic) and 100 airlines (freight traffic), together with statistics for major airline alliances. Airlines are ranked in terms of international, domestic and total scheduled passenger numbers, freight tonnes, passenger–kilometres, and freight tonne–kilometres. Top countries, airport–pairs, and airport rankings are also displayed in terms of their passenger or freight traffic. Also included are top 50 airlines ranked by financial results, operating revenue and operating profit. Another ranking included is top 50 airlines ranked by number of employees. In addition, a set of rankings of the top 25 airlines by fleet size is presented.

2.1 Top 25 Airlines: Ranked by Passenger TrafficThe data presented in the Passenger Traffic Ranking are sourced directly from airlines, the US Department of Transportation, or estimated by IATA. The data refer to total scheduled traffic, excluding non–scheduled (or “charter”) traffic that does not have pre–established schedules.

Airline traffic data are compiled based on on–flight origin–destination counting, which–in the case of passenger traffic–roughly compares to the amount of boarding passes issued. This means that passengers making connections will be at least counted twice. The equivalent applies to freight data.

The distinction between domestic and international traffic is determined by the flight stage (a flight from take–off to landing). Passengers or freight on a flight with both an international and a domestic flight stage are included under both domestic and international traffic. Cabotage traffic, i.e. flight stages within a single state flown by a carrier that is not resident of that state, is counted as international traffic.

Passenger data refer to the revenue passenger concept. Non–revenue passengers such as airline staff flying on preferential fares are excluded. Infants not occupying a seat are also excluded. Airlines may include “no–shows”, provided that the tickets were non–refundable and non–changeable.

Airline data are presented according to the operating carrier, which means that passengers flying on tickets issued by other airlines on code–shared operations are included under the airline that operated the flight. In the event that airline data include traffic of other operators, this occasionally occurs for certain airline groups and/or airlines having subsidiaries, notes will be made.

    (1) IATA Estimate(2) US DOT(3) Airline has additional notes regarding coverage; please see the Notes section at the end of the Rankings for further information.(4) Passenger data include 'no-shows' on non-refundable and non-changeable tickets

2.2 Top 25 Airlines: Ranked by Cargo TrafficThe data presented in the Cargo and Freight Traffic Ranking are sourced directly from airlines, the US Department of Transportation, or estimated by IATA. The data refer to total scheduled traffic, excluding non–scheduled (or “charter”) traffic that did not have pre–established schedules.

Airline traffic data are compiled based on on–flight origin–destination counting. This means that any cargo (in tonnage terms) that makes an intermediate connection will be at least counted twice. Surface transportation (for example trucking) is not included.

The distinction between domestic and international traffic is determined by the flight stage (a flight from take–off to landing). Cargo on a flight with both an international and a domestic flight stage are included under both domestic and international traffic. Cabotage traffic, i.e. flight stages within a single state flown by a carrier that is not resident of that state, is counted as international traffic.

Cargo data refer to Freight (consignments accompanied by an airway bill and express mail) and traditional Mail. Passenger (excess) luggage is excluded. Cargo and Freight figures are reported in actual tonnage terms, as opposed to chargeable weight.

Airline data are presented according to the operating carrier. In the event that airline data include traffic of other operators, this occasionally occurs for certain airline groups and/or airlines having subsidiaries, notes will be made.

2.4 Top Freight Country–Pairs, International and Regional TrafficThe top freight country–pair rankings as presented in this table are estimated by IATA. It covers all scheduled traffic, on all airlines world–wide, however excluding integrator traffic. The data are uni–directional and compiled on an on–flight origin–destination counting basis. This means that, for example, freight (in tonnage terms) that is shipped from China, P.R. to Germany with an intermediate connection in United Arab Emirates, will be presented twice, once under China, P.R. to United Arab Emirates, and once under United Arab Emirates to Germany.
