Seaweeds as at-tractive source

of biomass from the sea – ex-perts meet at

North Sea Area

To express the im-portance of this

new industry, experts from all over the world will gather at Seagricul-ture 2013: the Second International Seaweed Conference. This con-ference will be organ-ised on 25 and 26th of September 2013 at the North Sea Area (Den Helder and Texel) fol-lowing the success of the first edition at the Oosterschelde-area in 2012.

The conference will have specific atten-tion for the sustain-able seaweed chain. The seaweed chain will be explored with knowledge transfer op-portunities between companies and on-going science. Both plenary and bilateral sessions are planned with the following topics: Hatchery and Farming, Marine Spa-tial Planning, Market Chain Development, Mechanization, Pre-processing, Storage and Logistics, Biorefin-ery and products.

During the second day all attendees are invited at NIOZ Texel. At NIOZ Texel, the Netherlands Seaweed Science Centre (NSSC, in short Seaweed Cen-tre) is being estab-lished. The goal of the Seaweed Center is to perform fundamental and applied research on seaweeds. For ex-ample, research on the ecophysiology of seaweeds, selection of the most suitable seaweed species for cultivation at the North Sea, will take place at the Seaweed Centre.
