• Purpose: To examine the role and responsibility of universities to promote global awareness

and peace through education.

• 1965: The inauguration ceremony of the IAUP at Oxford University, UK

• 2005: The 14th IAUP General Assembly in Pattaya, Thailand

• Today: 1032 member universities from 128 countries

• The 36th UN General Assembly adopts the International Day and Year of Peace on November 30,

1981

• International Day of Peace: third Tuesday of every September

• Since 1982: Annual conference to commemorate the UN International Day of Peace

3. Establishment of the Graduate Institute of Peace Studies (GIP):

Recipient of the 1993 UNESCO Prize for Peace Education

• Purpose: Established in 1984 to educate a new generation of leaders dedicated to fostering

• Program: Interdisciplinary education on peace studies leading to a Master‟s degree in Public Policy

or Public Administration

• Scholarships of full tuition, room & board

• Instruction in English

• Extracurricular training programs in leadership, Model UN, meditation, martial arts, etc.

• Theme : The Role of NGOs in the 21th Century

• Hosts : The U.N. Conference of NGOs, U.N. NGO/Department of Public Information Executive

• Attendance : Registration of 1,360 NGOs and over 13,000 NGO representatives from 108

countries

6. The UN Peace Park and the Global NGO Complex

• Background: Being built on 82 acres of Global Campus land, the UN Peace Park and the

Global NGO Complex symbolize the commitment of Kyung Hee University to foster lasting

world peace and cooperation. They are the result of promises made at the 1999 Seoul

International Conference of NGOs.

• Vision: To become a global hub for civil society activities, research and education to

promote the civic values of engagement and the betterment of humanity.

"The Peace Park is a magnificent reaffirmation of the ideals that the University of

Kyung Hee and the people of Korea share with the United Nations. It is a powerful

testament to the feelings of brotherhood shared by all Koreans, no matter where

they live. And at a time when you have been so deeply saddened by the murder in

Iraq of one of your beloved sons, the Inauguration of the Peace Park is a fitting

occasion for us all to reaffirm our belief in the essential goodness of the human

spirit."

9. Social Contribution - Kyung Hee‟s Support and Engagement with the Millennium

Development Goals

Purpose

• To contribute to the MDGs through local Kyung Hee Programs

• To promote awareness about the MDGs through campaigns and public

information

• To promote the MDGs through joint programs with UN DPI, UN DESA

Activities

• Kyung Hee participation in the Global Poverty Reduction Network

• The Establishment of Students for MDG Frontier

• The Fund raising for poverty reduction

10. Social Contribution - Humanities courses for Poor and Disadvantaged People

Purpose• To help the isolated and disadvantaged population regain confidence and hope

in life through courses on the humanities

• To contribute academic knowledge to society

Program

• Started programs in poor areas in Shillim-dong, Joongae-dong, Dongdaemun and

Suwon

• Mobilize resources from the Government and private sector and expand the activities

nationwide with the cooperation of civil society organizations

• Build partnerships with other universities, UN DESA, UNDP, etc. for global programs

Future Plan• Establish implementation unit/committee

• Collaborate with the College of Liberal Arts on specific programs

11. Social Contribution - One Fine Day: 365 Ways to Share and Love

Purpose

• To dedicate one day of the year for students, faculty and staff to volunteer

for a social contribution program.

• To expand on the Kyung Hee University – The Beautiful Foundation Partnership

Program

• Promote nationwide volunteerism through mass campaigns

• Raise awareness about global issues through the “One Fine Day” website

and build social responsibilities

• Collect experiences and publish exemplary volunteerism in a booklet entitled

“365 Ways to Share and Love”

• 2006. 10. 28 Opening of the Beautiful Sharing Center

• 2006. 11. 28 “The world we change” SBS TV program feature

• Initiate joint projects with the government, private sector, media, civil society

• Raise awareness on volunteerism through mass media events

• Establish a website “One Fine Day” to allow online contributions
