Love him or hate him, Jimmy Carr’s new show Funny Business is one of the hottest tickets in Toon this month.

The show, we are promised, is packed with jokes (one hopes so), perceptive musings on the human condition (we’ll be the judge of that) and is rude and offensive (it wouldn’t be Jimmy Carr if it wasn’t). It’s also only 25 quid, which is a bargain! Newcastle City Hall, October 2, £25 newcastlecityhall.org

ROLL UP!

One of the most talked-about productions of 2015, Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour, by Billy Elliott writer Lee Hall, follows a rowdy group of Scottish Catholic schoolgirls as they head off to compete in a singing competition.

This month I’ve mostly been occupied with a new game - rhyme an MP’s name with an activity you would like to do with them.

So far I’m going Zorbing with Jeremy Corbyn; to the shops I’m splurging with Nicola Sturgeon; and I’m making Rennet with Natalie Bennett.

I’m not doing anything with David Cameron - not for the lack of activities that rhyme with his name, just that I don’t think he wants to play British Bulldog and he probably has a note from his mam. And he would get chinned; not off me, like.

According to David, Jeremy would be out that Zorb and would be giving him the lickings of a dog. Possibly a scrubbing with some grass or maybe even a burn on his arm - at least David thinks he would.

If you disagree, or think I am talking a load of rubbish, check out Dave’s tweet describing the new Labour leader as ‘a threat to our national security, our economic security and your family’s security’.

Some one is telling porky’s (what else they do with them is their business).

A STAR IS BORNKenny Atkinson’s restaurant House of Tides has been awarded a Michelin star, just 18 months after it opened on the Quayside.

A regular on BBC1’s Saturday Kitchen, Atkinson brings the first star to the city since 2000. The 37-year-old chef, who started out on a fruit and vegetable stall in the Grainger Market 20 years ago, said: “I’ve had a star twice before and it felt great but now it feels so much sweeter and the satisfaction is taking something from nothing to what it is now.” Congrats!Quayside, houseoftides.co.uk

Influential musician, inspired songwriter, natty dresser and all-round dude Johnny Marr will be gracing the Toon with his messianic genius this month.

What is Newcastle going to bring to the Rugby World Cup?Newcastle has a passion and a fire for sport so we can expect an incredible atmosphere.

What’s it like to see the Rugby World Cup here in Newcastle? It’s a proud moment. I spent a long time here with the Falcons and to see the World Cup played at St James’ Park is a treat for the players, the fans and me.

What should visitors do in Newcastle?Spend some time waking around and find the personality of the city. Get into the town and the Quayside and see some of the architecture - as well as sampling the nightlife.

If you had to pick one game to watch at St James’ Park which would it be?I’d have to go for the Scotland v South Africa game. The intensity will be high.

Have you got a message for the fans?Come and be part of the tournament. The best teams in the world are here playing, but also come and see what the city is like. Catch a game if you can, and if not, catch a night out.

10TH BIRTHDAY

Having transformed live music in the city since its opening in 2005, the O2 Academy welcomes a host of local talent including indie pop band Little Comets, retro duo Hyde & Beast, Du Blonde, Shields and more to celebrate its 10th anniversary this month. Here’s some history:

Picture house turned ballroom turned bingo hall turned music venue - the O2 opened in 2005 with a Futureheads gig.

The fastest-selling gig was Guns n’ Roses’ Slash, which sold out in five minutes.

Originally built as a cinema in 1912, it became the Majestic Ballroom in 1958 and hosted The Kinks, Small Faces, and The Beatles, who went

on to write their biggest selling UK hit, She Loves You, after their show.

Some 7,500 bands have played the Academy; that’s more than 2.5m music fans!

In that time, not everything has gone smoothly: Staff once had to eject a reveller for throwing Kinder Eggs at kiddie rockers McFly.

The stage-side tech office has often been used as an extra dressing room. We’re told they could smell the hairspray for weeks after Steel Panther had been in.

Art rockers Everything Everything got stuck in the lift after their gig but didn’t let it get them down - they filled the time by harmonising and whistling away happily.

Pop princess Paloma Faith had some interesting first aid requests: 1x Nipple rub from new shirt: gauze pad applied. 1x Blister on foot due to ill-fitting shoes: adhesive dressing applied.

Two of the Academy’s technical crew got dressed as monkeys, chucked bananas at the audience and pretended to ‘attack’ Basement Jaxx for their last song.

An inflatable penis prop couldn’t fit on stage, so the Academy didn’t get a Tenacious D gig unfortunately.

One of the street team took Pete Doherty for a hot beef dip at Dickinson’s once. For a full list of upcoming gigs, see the website.

CLIFF RICHARD

After 57 years (57 YEARS!) in music, Harry Webb (aka Cliff Richard) is still selling out tours. Not a fan? What’s wrong with you? Wired for Sound is a classic! Here’s more:

Cliff’s annual calendar – a vehicle for his toned 75-year-old abs and enough to make any woman of a certain age hot under the collar - sells way more every year than David Beckham, Kylie Minogue, and The Krankies - regularly topping the calendar charts.

Born in 1940 in British India, young Harry grew up in Cheshunt in Hertfordshire, where a block of flats named Cliff Richard Court now stands. Cliff is said to consider this his greatest accolade.

City Hall, October 7, newcastlecityhall.org

Harry changed his name to Cliff in the 1950s, because it sounded more rock-y. See what he did there?

Cliff was once a pop pioneer. As John Lennon said: “The first English record that was anywhere near anywhere was Move It by Cliff Richard. Before that there’d been nothing.” Sadly, Lennon did not live to see what was arguably Cliff’s greatest musical moment - the 1999 number one The Millennium Prayer - a mash-up of the Lord’s Prayer and Auld Lang Syne.

Cliff is a confirmed bachelor (ref his 1963 hit Bachelor Boy) and is famously celibate, saying

that his decision to shun sex and drugs made him “the most radical rock star there has ever been”. Tell that to Keith Richards.

Cliff represented the UK in the 1973 Eurovision Song Contest, finishing second with Congratulations. Conspiracy theorists claim the ’68 vote was fixed by General Franco to allow Spanish songstress Massiel to win with La La La.

Only Cliff and Elvis have made the UK singles charts in all of its first six decades (1950s–2000s), though of course Elvis has been dead since 1977, which in our book makes is a little more impressive.

Cliff is still churning out albums, compilations and DVDs plus mugs, hoodies and Cliff gifts. The cover of his 2016 calendar features Cliff in a white suit, emerging from the sea with a bottle of rose wine and two glasses in his hands. The man is a god!
