Standard H-SS 6.2.5 I will be able to describe the importance
of Egyptian architecture when taking Cornell notes.
I will know and use the words architecture and pyramids.
Egyptian architecture
The art or practice of designing
and constructing buildings.
There is architecture everywhere!
Architecture
Most important
types of building were temples for their gods and tombs for their pharaohs.
Egyptian architecture
Temples for their gods
Obelisks were important in the
architecture of the ancient Egyptians/ They were placed, in pairs, at the entrance of temples.
A number of ancient Egyptian obelisks are known to have survived,
These obelisks are now dispersed around the world, and fewer than half of them remain in Egypt.
The obelisk symbolized the sun god Ra, and the Egyptians believed that the god existed within the structure.
Ancient Egyptian Obelisks
Step pyramids were then designed as tombs for
pharaohs. They believed that they would be a stairway to the gods.
Pyramids
The pyramids of Giza- Built by and for King
Khufu, his son Khafre, and his grandson Menkaure. The tallest pyramid is the Great pyramid for Khufu.
The great sphinx guards the road to Khafre’s pyramid.
Pyramids- A lasting achievement
Standard H-SS 6.2.5 and 6.2.9
C.O. I will be able to describe the important achievements of the Egyptian civilization after completing my Cornell notes.
L.O.: I will know and use the words hieroglyphs, sculptures, anatomy, and papyrus when discussing with my peers.
Achievements of Ancient Egypt
Sculptures in Ancient Egypt
• Sculptures are statues made of clay, stone, or other materials.
• Most sculptures were statutes of people or gods.
What are some examples of sculptures in Ancient Egypt?
• Huge statutes of gods stood in temples.
• Smaller statutes of Egyptians that once lived, were placed in tombs along with the mummies.
Achievements in Ancient Egypt
Ancient Egyptian paintings
The paintings allow us to know and learn more about the Egyptians.
Paintings in tombs also gave people everything they would need after dying, in the afterlife.

Advances in knowledge
What does anatomy mean?
• Anatomy is the study of the body and the organs.
How did Egyptians learn about the human body?
• As mummies were prepared, Egyptians learned a lot about the human body.
• Egyptian doctors also studied diseases and created medicines to treat them.
The Egyptians made progress in what they knew.
Measuring time
How did the Egyptians measure time?
• The Egyptians developed the first accurate (correct) calendar.
• This calendar was based on the cycles of the moon and had 360 days.
Why did they change their calendar?
• The Egyptians changed their calendar because it was not accurate enough.
• They changed it according to the height of the Nile flood waters.
• They invented “Nilometers” and this calendar had 365 days.
• They even added 1 extra day every 4 years to make it accurate.
Hieroglyphs
What was the Egyptian’s writing system?
The Egyptians used hieroglyphs.
What does hieroglyph mean?
• Hieroglyph comes from the Greek words hieros (sacred) and glypho (inscriptions)
Let’s learn about hieroglyphs
Lets be scribes!
Directions: You are to make a cartouche (car-toosh) using hieroglyphs.
You will write your first name OR last name.
You can choose to write it vertically (north/south) or horizontally (east/west)
Please be neat!
