Nelson Mandela

Nelson MandelaMajor Contributions:• Nelson Mandela was a civil rights leader in South Africa. He

fought against apartheid, a system where non-white citizens were segregated from whites and did not have equal rights. He served a good portion of his life in prison for his protests, but became a symbol for his people. Later he would become president of South Africa.

3 Interesting Facts:• Nelson was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.• He spent 27 years in prison.• Invictus was a 2009 movie about Nelson Mandela and the

South African rugby team.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu

Desmond TutuMajor Contributions:Desmond Tutu is a well-known South African activist, whose efforts to solve the issue of apartheid, during 1980s, gave him worldwide fame. Tutu became the voice of the 'voiceless' black people, who suffered from racial discrimination in South Africa. His lectures and writings at home and abroad played a significant role in solving the issue of apartheid. Apart from this, Desmond Tutu has organized several campaigns to fight AIDS, poverty and racism.

3 Interesting Facts:• He was the first black person to become the Archbishop of Cape Town. He

also became the first black Bishop of Johannesburg.• Tutu is the second South African to receive Noble Peace Prize.• In 2007, he joined The Elders, a group of seasoned world leaders including

Nelson Mandela, Kofi Annan, Jimmy Carter and others, who meet to discuss ways to promote human rights and world peace.

Aung San Suu Kyi

Aung San Suu Kyi Major Contributions:Myanmar - previously known as Burma - gained freedom from colonial rule in 1984 and became a democracy, but the democratic rule ended in 1962 with a military coup.

In 1990, elections were held for the first time after almost 30 years. The national league for democracy (led by Aung San Suu Kyi - pronounced Soo-Chi) won the elections. But the military leader of Myanmar refused to step down and did not recognize the election results. So, the military put the elected pro-democracy leaders, including Suu Kyi, under house arrest.

3 Interesting Facts:•She was released from house arrest in 2010•While she was under house arrest, she read philosophy and piano•She is a Nobel Peace Prize Winner.

Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma GandhiMajor Contributions:Gandhi is one of the most famous leaders for justice in the world; he led the fight for Indian independence from the British Empire. He organized non-violent civil disobedience campaigns where large groups of Indians would do things like refusing to work. These protests led to India getting independence from the British.3 Interesting Facts:• His belief in non-violence has been followed by many other

important civil rights leaders including Martin Luther King, Jr. and Nelson Mandela.

• Gandhi was assassinated on January 30, 1948. He was shot at a prayer meeting by a terrorist.

• Gandhi wrote a lot. The Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi have 50,000 pages!

Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr.Major Contributions:Martin Luther King Jr. was a civil rights activist in the 1950s and 1960s. He led non-violent protests to fight for the rights of all people including African Americans. He hoped that America and the world could become a colorblind society where race would not impact a person's civil rights.3 Interesting Facts:• Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4. 1968 in Memphis,

TN. He was shot by James Earl Ray while standing on the balcony of his hotel.

• King was the youngest person to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

• King’s "I have a Dream" speech has become one of the most famous speeches in history. It was a success; the Civil Rights Act was passed a year later in 1964.

Bono

BonoMajor Contributions:• Bono has been a leader in the fight against AIDS and poverty in

Africa since 1998. He is the co-founder of ONE, a group backed by more than two million people that is dedicated to the fight against global poverty and disease. (RED) has generated more than $120 million from some of the biggest brands in the world for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria to finance AIDS programs in Africa.

3 Interesting Facts:• He was given the Nobel "Man of Peace" prize at the Ninth Summit

of Nobel Peace Prize Laureates.• In 2007 he was awarded an honorary British knighthood• The lead singer of the Irish rock band U2, which has sold more

than 140 million albums and won 22 Grammys.
