The PictureDictionary1. Listen & Repeat & Point: Thestudents listen to the CD (or theteacher), and repeat the words.Then, the teacher reads the wordswhile students point to thecorresponding pictures in theirbooks.

2. Categorize: The students (as aclass or in groups) put the wordsinto categories (e.g. publictransportation/privatetransportation; expensive/inexpensive; fast/slow).

3. Extend the Vocabulary: Theteacher elicits from the studentsmore words not found in the book.Students form sentences with thewords in the Word Partnerships box.

4. Ask Questions: The teacher asksquestions about the vocabularywords (e.g. Do you prefer ____ or____? How do you get to class?).

5. Paired Spelling: One studentreads a word aloud (with bookopen); the partner spells it (withbook closed).

6. Bingo: The teacher tells thestudents to write down any fivewords from the picture dictionary.The teacher then randomly readsthe words aloud. The first studentto have all of his/her words readaloud wins.

7. Word Builder: Students completethe Word Builder activities usingthe Dictionary page(s).

Practicing Grammar 1. Review the Charts: The studentslook at the charts and discuss thenew grammar. The teacher asksthe students to form newsentences.

2. Activity Completion: Aftercompleting written activities,students compare answers with apartner and repeat the sentencesorally.

3. Working Together: The teacherasks two or more students tomodel new Working Togetheractivities so that students arecomfortable with the task. Whenforming groups, include studentswith different languagebackgrounds and abilities.

4. Dictations: Four or more studentsgo to the board. The teacher (orstudents) dictate sentences fromthe unit for the students to write.

5. Write a Conversation: Studentsuse the theme of the unit to writeand act out new conversationsabout the topic.

6. Find Examples: The teacherencourages the students to findexamples of the grammar in theirjobs or in the community.

7. Workbook: For additionalpractice, the teacher directs thestudents to completeaccompanying exercises in theWorkbook.

The Big Picture 1. Vocabulary Activities:

a. The students find 10 vocabularywords in the picture. Theteacher writes them on theboard.

b. The students sit in groups andlabel any 15 objects in thepicture.

c. The teacher asks the studentsto find 10 actions taking place inthe picture.

2. Questions: The teacher asksquestions about the picture (e.g.What is Elena doing? What is Harrywearing? How many passengers aregetting on the bus?).

3. Listen to the Story: The teacherplays the CD or reads the storyseveral times.

4. Label the People: The studentswrite the names on the correctperson.

5. Retell the Story: The studentsretell any part of the story theyremember.

6. Exercises: The students do theexercises in the book. Beforecompleting an exercise, direct thestudent to read the sentences orquestions first, then, replay the CD.

7. Write a Story or Dialog: As a class or in groups, the studentswrite a story or dialog about The Big Picture.

Reading 1. Discuss: The class discusses thetopic of the reading.

2. Vocabulary: Choose three or fournew vocabulary words for thestudents to learn. Discuss themeanings. Ask the students towrite the new words in theirnotebooks.

3. Silent Reading: The students readthe story silently. They underlineand ask about any new words.

4. Listen to the Reading: The teacherreads the story as the studentsfollow along silently.

5. Retell the Information: Theteacher reads the story again. Aftereach paragraph, students retell theinformation in their own words.

6. Comprehension Activities:Students complete thecomprehension activity after thereading and compare their answerswith a partner.

7. Sharing Opinions: Students sharetheir opinions about the readingand their personal experiencesrelated to the topic.

Writing Our Stories 1. Read the Model Story: Thestudents read the story silently, orthe teacher reads it aloud.

2. Discuss the Organization: Theclass talks about the organizationof the story. The students finddetails and examples in the story.

3. Writing: Each student writeshis/her own story, using the model story as an example.Students use the questions orcompletion activities to help themwrite their stories.

4. Sharing Our Stories: Studentsexchange stories with a partner andcomplete the shared information intheir textbooks.

5. Editing: The teacher collects thestudent stories and selectsindividual sentences to use as anediting exercise. Students find andcorrect the mistakes.

6. Rewriting: Based on partnercomments, editing, and teacherinput, each student rewrites his/herstory.

7. Portfolios: Students should keepindividual folders of all theirstories.
