ENGLISH POOL ASSOCIATIONMESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Firstly let me welcome all readers to the first ever on-line news magazine supported by EPA, working inconjunction with the IPA, WEPF and EEPF.

EPA made a commitment to the magazine as a positive move forward in keeping all pool playersinformed of events, competitions, reports and general information surrounding the National Association.Since EPA was formed they have made huge advances through a lot of good ideas from a number ofdedicated members. The first stage was the formation of the EPA National Inter-County league endingwith the prestigious National Inter-County Finals held at one of the largest holiday parks in Norfolk.

The second step was the introduction of the EPA National Inter-League section, again with aNational Finals event being held at Vauxhall Holiday Park. To compliment this we introduced the NationalKO Cup as a sister event for the Inter-League competition.

During this introduction I will also mention the other major events EPA hold during each year. TheGolden Cue 3-man event open to amateurs, the Champion of Champions open to local league winnersand runners-up and finally the Ladies KO Cup team event. All these being national events held atVauxhall Holiday Park. Reports on all these events and more will be highlighted more in later issues. When they introduced the National Players ID Membership cards back in 1997. This has now beenexpanded to a more comprehensive database and also a revamped website allowing for betterdissemination of information for players, tournament organisers, etc.

To follow all the latest information and links log on to our website at www.epa.org.uk.

I hope you enjoy this inaugural issue, and on behalf of the EPA, wish the World Pool Magazine everysuccess.

Geoff Wilson EPA Chairman

NEW CHAPTER FOR TOUR PROGRAMME

The title of editor may exude a certain amount of power and prestige.

Indeed, I’ve had the fortune - and misfortune - to have been editor of various cue sportpublications throughout my career. And while people outside these pages may think youare in charge, that’s not always the case.

Indeed, take our new publication, featuring the best of English style 8-Ball Pool, as anexample.

My favoured title was ‘Planet Pool’ but there was suggestions of trying to play‘Superman’by certain people so it was back to the drawing board. And after burningmuch midnight oil, the eventual choice was ‘World Pool.’

Hopefully, what follows after the front cover is what it says on the tin.

We are all about 'world pool'-providing its ‘English 8-Ball’, ‘Reds and Yellows’ orwhatever name you want to give the small table game. And while I maybe editor, themagazine belongs to the readers.

It’s your publication, whether you be in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Uganda,England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland or wherever. And as such you set the agendaof what we write about.

‘World Pool’ makes no excuse for favouring our preferred pool discipline but there’scertainly no discrimination on what we can cover.

There will be tournament reports, personality pieces, coaching advice.

We’ve even dedicated some space to the referees so that shows how unbiased we are!

In the end, ‘World Pool’ will stand or fall by the information we receive from you, thereaders.

Hopefully, you will be as enthusiastic about this project as we are. And we want to hearyour ideas and suggestions to ensure ‘World Pool’ is a success.

Indeed, you might even agree with me, that ‘Planet Pool’ is a better title and help me putpressure on those who know better.

Seriously, we do want to receive your feedback, positive or negative.

So, enjoy this first issue of ‘World Pool’ and we look forward to hearing your views andreading your news in future mags.

From start to end, this was one of the bestEuropean Championships we have ever held.Congratulations to Malta for a top class event, venue, set-up, opening ceremony and finalpresentation which were all of the highestlevel. There was also 13,000 euros Prize Fund.

With over 300 players and spectators residentat the Dolmen Hotel, the atmosphere in thegames room was electric, particularly when thehost country were at the table.

It was fitting that Malta’s Clayton Attard wonthe Mens Individuals event, whilst former

Well done to all of the event winners, detailson Page 4, some great displays and certainlyplenty of entertaining Pool for the knowledge-able spectators to view. TERRIFIC TRENT IN THE FLOW AT INTERLEAGUE FINALS

WORLDPOOLOOOOOOO

12

It was business as usual for Staffordshire’sTrent Trophies as they eased to victory againstfirst time finalists Northwich A in the NationalInterleague winner’s event held at VauxhallHoliday Park, Great Yarmouth.

The event starts with the top 96 teams inEngland divided into groups of three. Thewinner of each group then goes forward tothe last 32 knockout stages.

And there was one section that caughteveryone’s attention when the draw waspublished-the group of death with: TrentTrophies, Dawley and Ipswich.

All three teams were previous finalists. So,two sides, more than capable of winning thetitle, would be knocked out before theknockout phase!

The group could have been more interestingif the first match between Shropshire’sDawley and Suffolk’s finest had produced awinner.

Instead, the two sides fought out a 9-9 draw. That result was of no real use to either teamand played into the hands of Trent Trophies.

In the next match. Trent Trophies demolishedDawley 13-5 to all but securetheir path to the last 32.

In the third game Ipswich had to beat TrentTrophies and by a large score to stop themprogressing.

Faced with an all but impossible task, Ipswichnever got to grips with TrentTrophies’ attack and could only manage fourframes before Trent Trophies reached thewinning line.

While Trent Trophies demolished Ipswich, twoyoung men were deciding the fate of someof the best Interleague teams in the country.London’s James Coffey and Nottingham’s

Bradley Wilson were on stage drawing outthe pairings for the last 32.

They were blissfully unaware of the signifi-cance of what they were doing. The samecan’t be said of the various captains whowere eagerly watching and waiting to seewho their likely opponents were going to be.

Avoiding one of the ‘big’ teams in the last 32for as long as possible is one of the mustswhen reaching the knockout stage.

Meltis Club from Bedfordshire would havefancied their chances of making animpression but drew Trent Trophies. And thatwas the kiss of death.

Meltis didn’t really trouble Trent Trophiesthough they took six frames off them beforebeing put to the sword. Meanwhile, North-wich probably would have enjoyed an easierdraw than Preston South – another team thathas reached a few finals in their time.

However, Northwich put in a fineperformance and pulled of a remarkable winto secure their passage into the last 16.

Trent Trophies kept their momentum goingwith an emphatic 10-4 win over Derbyshire’sDinnington. As Trent Trophies were

removing Dinnington from their list of hazardsof contenders, Northwich were taking care ofTrent Trophies B.

In the quarter finals, there was no let up fromTrent Trophies as they crushed Hammersmith9-3. No team enjoys losing but they certainlywant to go down fighting.

And Hammersmith couldn’t mount a seriouschallenge-a result that probably said moreabout the power of Trent Trophies A than itdid about Hammersmith’s weaknesses.

Northwich kept on track for their first final bytaking out the local boys South Norfolk 10-7.

This was an excellent result for Northwich as,over the years, the Norfolk’s boys have alwaysproved to be a difficult team.

The event was now down to four teams. TrentTrophies A took on the tougher of thesurvivors, Sun Valley, who have won theInterleague title before.

But like the rest, they had no real answer toTrent Trophies and could only muster fiveframes before the champions’ elect reachedthe magical nine frames.

Northwich took on Leicester’s Midland Railwayin one of the most one sided semi-finals ever

seen in the 30 years of the event.

Poor old Midland Railway ran out of steamvery quickly. They lost frame after frame andeventually went down 9-1. With the finalmoving on to three tables sometimes it can allbe a bit of a blur if you are not ready for it.

Trent Trophies of course are well used to it butfor Northwich this was their first appearancein a National Final.

Trent Trophies came out with all guns blazingand virtually killed the contest off within thefirst six frames.

Northwich rallied slightly and managed tonotch up four frames but Trent Trophies werein no mood to be nice and rattled of theremaining frames to run out 9-4 winners.

This means that Trent Trophies are running outof space to list their achievements and in anice gesture Gareth Potts gave his winners’trophy to James Coffey – the 10-year-old whohad made the draw that saw Trent Trophiesremain the world’s greatest Interleague teamby some distance.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEWSPONSORSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT EXPECTED SOONWith only three months to go before the startof the World 8-Ball Pool Championships thereis still no final decision on who will sponsor theevent.

Discussions have been ongoing since Januaryand an announcement is expected within days.

After many years support from leading compa-nies, including Embassy, 888.com, Foster’s, weunderstand another major brand name has ex-pressed interest in the championships, whichhopefully will be confirmed shortly. If it doesn’tmaterialise then the English Pool Associationhas formulated a Plan “B”.

With or without a sponsor, there is no doubtthat the Barcelo Imperial Hotel, Blackpool willhost this year’s World Championships startingon Saturday, June 25 with the final stages ofthe National qualifiers which will be played toa new format.

In 2010, qualifiers joined the championships atthe early stages and many of them fell by theway side having only played one match in themain arena.

This year there will be 28 qualifiers who willstart their World Championships in the mainarena on June 25 where they will play a round-robin format giving each player severalmatches.

The top four from each of the groups willprogress to the next stage when the first roundof the men's individual event commenceswhilst the other competitors will leave theevent.

All qualifiers involved in the round-robin stagewill receive accommodation at the Imperial forthis part of the competition.

As an additional prize, the final 16 qualifierswill also compete (on June 25) in a knockoutevent with the winner receiving the massiveprize of a place in the last 48 stage of thechampionships.

This is just one round away from where the

seeds enter, including defending championMick Hill.

So, this is surely a great incentive for anyonefortunate to gain entry at the Regional Quali-fiers.

There will be 20 venues in the National quali-fiers. (See page 46-47 for details)

All aspects of the championships will be as perlast year, including Tiered Seating and T.V.Arena. If the championships are not televised,it is planned to “Stream” live on the WorldWide Web.

Prize monies will still be a total of £ 26,000 if“Streamed” and £ 30,000 if “Televised.”

THREE THE MAGICNUMBER FOR HILL?

Mick Hill aims to join an exclusive club of onewhen he gets to Blackpool for this year's World8-Ball Championships.

Hill defeated Gareth Potts in last year's excel-lent, high quality final to claim his secondmen's singles crown.

But it was a long time between drinks for theWest Midlands born star`who first lifted the tro-phy in 2004. In doing so he became only one offive players to win the title twice after Potts,Jason Twist, Rob McKenna and Chris Melling.

Potts is out on his own with three and Hill hashis sights set on equalling that total while alsobecoming the second player to successfully re-tain his crown.

The women's singles has almost become thepersonal property of Sue Thompson. The Hullbased star has an aura about her that intimi-dated many opponents before they even get tothe table.

Thompson is a 10-time world champion, 15years after taking the title for the first time.

Northern Ireland's Emma Cunningham hassuffered more than most at Thompson's cue inrecent years. They've contested six finals and Thompson haswon the lot bar one. And after winning theEuropean Championship in Malta,Cunningham will be confident of finally gettingthe better of her left handed rival.

The individual tournaments may be the blueriband events but the team competitions arejust as closely contested. And it promises to bejust the same in 2011.

Wales' men inflicted defeat on favourites Eng-land at the Europeans and are now looking toemulate their 1998 and 2002 winning squads.Indeed, it could prove one of the most openchampionships of recent years.

Australia are sending their strongest squad formany years and the return of the SouthAfricans add an unpredictable note.

Kenya and Uganda won't be challenging forthe title but their participation adds to thecosmopolitan nature of the tournament.

England ladies want to get their trophy backfrom Wales.

The English cue queens were stunned byNorthern Ireland in the 2010 semi-finals whileWales defeated Australia before going on towin the title.

London teenager Frank Costello returns todefend his junior prize and it might not be longbefore the 17-year-old is challenging for seniorhonours.

All in all it promises to be another fascinatingchampionship. And you can catch up with allthe news and results at www.wepf.org

KENDALL BACK TO SKIPPER ENGLANDBUT POTTS AND DAVIS ABSENT

England's chances of retaining their worldteam title in June have suffered a double setback.

Stoke pair Gareth Potts and Adam Davis havedecided not to take up their internationalplaces.

And that gives hope to other nations includingrecently crowned European champions Walesand Republic of Ireland-the only team otherthan England to be crowned champions since2003.

However, skipper Lee Kendall, who has playedin every edition of the world championships, isback to lead the squad.

Kendall was one of six players assured of theirplaces along with: Gareth Hibbert, Neil Toms,John Rowe, Ben Flack and Ian Hubbard.

The four players to join them are former worldjunior champion Jordan Church, Chris Gill, JackPople and Darren Price.

JAMES THE THIRD

James Croxton won six matches, including thescalp of 1998 world champion, Carl Morris, toqualify for the final stages of the World Cham-pionships for a third successive year.

The Newcastle under Lyme cueman was one offour players to make it throughto Blackpool from nearly 300 players whostarted out at Vauxhall HolidayPark.

AUSSIES SEND STRONG SQUADTO REGAIN TEAM TITLERarely does any Australian team go 15 yearsin their chosen sport between world titles(writes Joe Fanto).

And that’s why this year’s Aussie men’s poolteam travelling to Blackpool for the WEPFWorld Championships is determined to showits true colours.

The men in green and gold are looking torepeat the feat of our 1996 worldchampionship winning team.

Since then the trophy has always eluded themdespite a couple of near misses.

Tough competition, in particular fromEngland, has had a lot to do with it.

However, due to the excessive costs to eachindividual that makes an Australian side eachyear, it is rare for us to send our best team.

Indeed, it costs each player approximately$4,000 - $4,500 AUS (£2,500 - £3,000) torepresent their country at a WorldChampionship in England.

However, in Surfers Paradise, Australia 2004we did become World Cup winners, defeating England in the final. Sadly, this wasthe only time the event was held.

In 2011, however, the first eight selectedplayers have committed to travel, hence all 8-Ball followers in Australia are expecting bigthings from their men’s team in Blackpool.

That team then is: Brenton Collier (2010Australian Champion), Ron Kelly, Ben Nunan,Stev Woods, Paul Hancock, Jake McCartney,Justin Sajich and Marc Robertson. Marc, brother of reigning world snooker champion,Neil Robertson, is captain of a team managedby Warren Ross.

The Australian women’s side, winners in2007, will be represented by:RenataDelahunty (captain), Lauren Jelly, NicoleFielding, Julie McEwan, Tania McClure andKolbe Poole. The team manager is CherylCongram.

Unfortunately two of our top three selectedplayers are not able to travel: 2010 Australianchampion and World Championship semi-finalist, Elise Mabbott, and 2009 Australiantitle winner, Marg Gorski.

However, it is still a strong team and expecteddo very well.

The Australian Junior Team were semi-finalists last year and expect to go one betterby making the final in 2011 to givethemselves a chance for a second world title.Their one and only World victory came in1997.

The Australian Junior team is: Luke Foster(2011 Australian champion and captain),Jason Hawker, Dane Van Kempen, MathewGartrell, Luke Anglessey and Nick Young. Theteam manager is Shane Congdon.

The Australian Over 50’s team rate themselvesa good chance for their second title, butunfortunately John Lehman, 2010 worldchampion will not be able to travel. The over50’s team will be Terry Bond (captain), ShaunBaker and John Howson.

Eight ball Pool in Australia is enjoying greatsuccess and the game played using WEPFWorld Rules is by far the largest participatedcue sport in the country.

The World Championships are held in highesteem. And all elite players aspire to wearthe National green jacket and Australian vestto pit their skills and represent their country, regardless of the financial sacrifice required.

It’s also a spring board for our NationalChampionships- the main event on thecalendar for the last 27 years.

Also players take great pride in representingtheir State or Territory and great rivalry existsbetween States.

The game in Australia is run by the AustralianEight-Ball Federation and a memberincorporated administrative body in each ofthe eight States and Territories.

National titles rotate around Australia eachyear with events for Men, Women, Over 50’sand a separate special event for Juniors in theunder 12, 15 and 18 category.

In 2010 the event was in Adelaide, SouthAustralia and in 2011 they will be in Sydney,New South Wales.

FLEMING CAN’T TAKE THE MIKECLARK CROWNED SCOTTISH CHAMP

Mike Clark avenged last year's finaldefeat on his way to becoming BISSalamis Scottish Open champion atAberdeen Rileys.

The experienced and prolific Scottishinternational knocked out 2010conqueror Pat McCarron in the semi-finals.

And Clark, who backed himself at 10-1prior to the tournament, then defeatedUnder 21 international and IPA Tourplayer, Ryan Fleming 9-5 in the final.

Clark started the final strongly, graduallyedging away from Fleming. Indeed, hisexperience and memories of last year'sfinal defeat to McCarron helping himconcentrate on doing the job.

It wasn't mistakes costing Fleming thegame, just the clinical finishing of Clarkkeeping him away from the table.Halfway through it was clear there wasonly going to be one winner.

Clark's triumph ended an excellent day ofpool which began with an early shock.Region 4 Tour winner, Peter Fyffe, surprised front-runner Richard Craddockin the prelims, demolishing him 4-0before the bar had opened!.

First round victories of note includedveteran Phil Craig Snr's victory overanother favourite, Shaun Wishart whileformer World Junior and Under 21Champ McCarron defeated ThomasBannon who was named player of thetournament at the U21 EuropeanChampionships.

Fyffe met his match against DarrenMatthew but only after the three-timeworld junior champion clinched a decider.

Big games in the last 32 saw ChrisCorcoran demolish Scottish captain,AdamMacleod, 6-1, while Matthew beatinternational team mate, MartinMcIntosh,6-4.

Dundee's Fleming brothers went head tohead, with Ryan edging out Marc bythe odd frame in eleven.

McCarron brushed aside former Scotlandskipper, Alex 'Zod' Stephen 6-2 andClark saw off Mark Oaten.

When play resumed at the last 16 stageon the following day, Corcoran continuedwhere he'd left off the previous session, blitzing Phil Craig Jnr 6-2.

Fleming enjoyed a great 6-3 win over theworld number 15 Matthew andMcCarron stepped up a gear with a

business like 6-1 demolition of PaulSimpson.

Lindsay Ahern beat brother Derek 6-2 toset up an encounter with McCarron.Clark comfortably defeated RaymondMackenzie 6-2 to set up a tie with the inform Ian Daniel.

McCarron kicked off the quarter finalswith an impressive 7-1 win over Ahernwho only managed to touch the cue balltwice in the first five frames.

In a classic encounter, Phil Craig Snr rolledthe clock back 20 years to gain a 7-5 winover Corcoran whilst Fleming cruised pastKev Coutts. The tie of the round sawClark raise his game to overcome Ellonbased Daniel 7-5.

In the semis, Fleming squared up to PhilCraig Snr who was playing his best poolfor years. Fleming held his cool to win thematch 8-5.

In a repeat of last year's final Clarkdefeated McCarron, 8-6. Both produceda high standard but it was Clark's surgicalprecision whilst under pressure thatswung the balance. And he continued to show his best form

in the final against Fleming.

*Phil Craig Snr won the Over 40s ScottishOpen, defeating Alex 'Zod' Stephenin the final.

FEDERATION FLOURISHES

The Scottish Eightball Pool Federationgoes from strength to strength with arecord amount of entries for the ScottishOpen, the creation of a new

Headed up, initially by the Obanand District Pool League, theyhope to begin their six event tourseries in the summer with the topranked player at the end of the

season gaining automatic entry to theScotland Squad for 2012.

In Malta, the Under 21 Team reached theEuropean Championships semi-finals andwere unlucky to lose to the hosts whothey defeated twice in the group stage.

The 2011 European championships were held in Malta from February 19thto 26th and Team Wales took a strong squad as normal.

The men’s “A” team at last lifted theEuropean Championship trophy after adominant performance in Malta. Wales havecontested three of the last four finals and lostto England on every occasion, but not thistime

Wales won the group stages easily after beatthe host nation Malta 9 – 6, followed by theholders and current World ChampionsEngland 11 – 4. This seemed to spur Wales onas they won all group matches to record an 8out of 8 performance.

In the semi final Wales took on surprisequalifiers Belgium, who sneaked into the semisas a result of Wales beating Ireland in the lastgroup game. Once again Wales were totallydominant and won the match easily by 8frames to 2.

The final was to be against England who camefrom 7 – 4 down in the semis against Malta towin 8 – 7.

The final was full of drama as it started withtwo very long tactical frames both being wonby England for a 2 – 0 lead. Wales howeverbounced back as Russell Burgess cleared thetable for his win while Wayne Smith capitaliseon a missed black by Lee Kendall to also clearthe table.

This seemed to give Wales the belief as theythen ran the next four frames very quickly tolead 6 – 2. Gareth Potts then dished PaulHawkins to reduce the lead to 6 – 3. Next upwas Oly Bale against Gareth Potts and after apoor positional shot Gareth left Oly Bale achance to clear and he did in double quicktime.

Tom Cousins now had the chance to win thetitle for Wales from the break against LeeKendall. Tom Broke well but the table was a

mess and no chance of a clearance. That’swhat we all thought, as Tom started to pull outshot after shot to leave a double on his lastyellow for position on the black in the middlebag. In it went and he rolled the black in, theplace went mad with delight as all of Maltaand Wales started to celebrate the victory.

A great run by the Welsh lads and a credit tothe nation as usual.

Tom Cousins and Paul Hawkins were top ofthe averages for Wales and the whole eventas they lifted player of the tournament with19 wins from 24 frames.

All five welsh players were in the top six placesof the rankings, showing how dominant theywere.

So Wales now look to the WorldChampionships in July for what promises to bea show down between the two best sides inthe World.

WELCOME TO TOUR TWO

WELCOME TO THE TOUR 2

29

As always Tour Two is the players’ favourite, combining a trip to Hinckley Island Hotel alongwith the ever popular Festival of Poolcompetitions.

We start with the Tour and then the Club eventfor the amateurs plus U.K. ProfessionalChallenge.

Starting on Saturday, we see the introductionof the Open event for Festival of Pool playersand to top it off we have the ever popularBarcelo Doubles competition involving all ofthe entrants to the weekend.

And just for good measure we also have theWorld Championship Qualifiers for four placesat the Blackpool finals in June.

It is good to see that the recession is notcausing us too much problem with Festival ofPool numbers which are up again.

However, this is not surprising. For only £120,players receive two nights’ accommodationplus entry into the £4,200 Barcelo Open andthe £7,400 Barcelo doubles.

It’s also good to see previous Tour membersand new faces returning to play in the Festivalwhich is, without doubt, the number oneamateur event on the pool calendar.

Entry figures are looking good. We havereceived more entrants since Tour One whichgives us an opportunity to further increase theprize fund from Tour Three onwards.

Indeed, there will be an increase on both Tourand Club events. Exact figures will beannounced after the executive meeting at TourTwo. As with our policy since the Tour started,we are a non-profit making association. Any

additional monies that come in will be used toincrease the prize funds.

Tour Two also sees a qualifier for the WorldChampionships with four members receivingentry to the individual event and three nights’accommodation.

But the real excitement for this Tour is theintroduction of World Pool magazine whichwill include our own Propool Magazine alongwith articles from countries around the world.

Our partners in this venture are the EnglishPool Association, supported by the W.E.P.F.

Not only can you read the printed copy here atthe Tour but thousands can now visit our ownwebsite www.propool.co.uk and read the en-tire magazine FREE OF CHARGE.

We have opened a channel in all areas of theworld where pool enthusiasts can read howthe Professionals are doing.

This is already proving to be of interest toadvertisers and potential sponsors who wantto reach the vast number of 8-Ball Pool Playersthroughout the world.

Now, there is no need to look at other cuesport magazines, which have only anoccasional mention of our sport. We now haveour very own magazine dedicated only to Poolplayers.

Details of how to contact our Editor, TrevorBaxter, are shown in this magazine.

Looking forward to another great Tour. See youat Barcelo Hinckley.

HARRISON HAS A CUNNING PLAN

PROFESSIONAL TROPHY

31

Phil Harrison knows what it takes to beatthree-time former world champion GarethPotts.

And in the final of the Professional Trophy atLeicester, Harrison's master plan worked atreat.

The Cambridgeshire window cleaner won 9-5to capture the final title held over from 2010.

“A lot of players get down hearted when theyplay Gareth because they know they don’t getmany shots,” explained Harrison.

“And he has got that little edge over people atthe moment.

“But as long as you realise that from the start, then you can beat him.

“Gareth does give you some chances andwhen you get those opportunities, you musttake them.

“And that’s what I did in this final.”

However, the 2009 world champion admits hisvictory came as something of a surprise.

“I always seem to start the year badly. Becauseof my work load and looking after theyoungster, I don't get much time to practice.

“I seem to get better as the year goes on. So,to win this tournament in January came assomething of a shock.

“It’s probably only my fourth or fifthprofessional title.

“I’ve been in loads more finals but usuallyended up losing them.

“And for two or three years, I really struggledto get past the quarter-finals of a pro event.”

Harrison almost came a cropper in the last

eight of the Professional Trophy. He trailedDerek Murphy 4-0 before reeling off eightstraight frames for victory.

“Fortunately for me, Derek made a couple ofmistakes and let me back in the match,” addedHarrison.

“Then I started to play better, beat NeilRaybone in the semis and went into the finalwithout any pressure.

“Hopefully, now I can go on and win a fewmore this year."

TOUR 1 REPORT

34

Gareth Potts established a new record forStrachan IPA Tour victories thanks to anopening campaign win over Lee Kendall.

Potts prevailed 8-5 in this all-Potteries clash toincrease his number of tour titles to 12.

That's one more than Keith Brewer and threeahead of Mick Hill and Darren Appleton.

And Potts has chalked up his dozen wins in justseven years.

“It’s a big achievement for me,” said Potts afterdefeating a resurgent Kendall.

“And hopefully I have got a few more left inme yet.”

Potts has triumphed in at least one Tour everyseason since 2004 apart from a barren year in2006.

And he certainly earned his latest success, avenging his world final defeat by Mick Hill inthe semi-finals.

“I actually had a real tough draw all the waythrough,” says Potts, whose close rival PhilHarrison lost 7-5 in the last 32 to FrankCostello.

“But the match with Mick was of a real highstandard.

“I was 4-1 down and took out a big finish toget to 4-2. That was a big turning point.

“I started to play really well after that andfortunately Mick missed his last ball in thedecider to let me in.”

While Potts beat Hill 8-7, England skipperKendall rolled back the years to beat RobChilton 8-4 in the other semi.

“It’s never easy playing someone like Lee whoI know so well,” agreed Potts.

“And I am really pleased for him.

“I know he was disappointed by his form atthe end of last year.

“He was losing to players he would normallyexpect to beat. I think it was either 'put in morepractice' or retire.

“Lee decided to put in the hours and it seemsto have paid off.

“As for me, I hope to continue playing well thisyear, win more titles and keep breakingrecords."

ENGLISH POOLREFEREES’ ASSOCIATION

REFEREES CORNER

We are "the men and women in the middle"who make sure the rules of the game areobserved by the players and spectators alike. We referee frames from local league pool tohigh profile events like the WorldChampionships.

We referee pool for a number of bodies:World Eightball Pool FederationEuropean 8Ball Pool FederationInt. Professional Pool Players AssociationEnglish Pool AssociationCIUClubs for Young People

A history of the EPRAIn the late summer/early autumn of 1980 theSecretary of the English Pool Association (EPA)made it known to its member leagues thatthey needed qualified referees.

The Secretary went on to say that they werelooking to run competitions with entry feesand prize money, so qualified Referees wouldbe essential. The Home Internationals weredue to be held in the November, and the EPAwas expected to supply the Referees. In orderto fulfil this need, the EPA decreed that anexamination was to be held at the Crest HotelCoventry on 4th October 1980. The top fourReferees would be invited to officiate at theHome Internationals. They, along with theothers passing the examination, would form anAssociation of Referees.

The examination took place with 33candidates, 13 of these were successful, andeach one received a letter of congratulationsand a certificate of merit. From these 13, theEnglish Pool Referees Association (EPRA) wasformed.

The first General Meeting of the EPRA washeld in November 1981. As the EPA expandedits influence, it formed a structure throughoutEngland which matches the EPA regionalstructure.

The EPRA decided to introduce a gradingstructure based upon experience and ability,

with annual membership fees set accordingly.

Joining the EPRAIn order to become a member of ourAssociation prospective candidates have tocomplete a written and practical exam set byour Association.

Why you might ask do we have an exam set sohard that only a handful of people ever pass. Our view is that we regard quality higher thanquantity. Our referees are without doubtamong the best in the refereeing world andthey are the envy of the rest of the World.

Our Association classes all referees in bandsaccording to experience and accumulatedknowledge both of the rules and events, thebands are S and A through to E. E gradereferees are the ones who have passed a shortmultiple choice exam. D grade referees are theones who have just passed the main exam andare learning the ropes or have sat the exam justto say "I am a qualified referee". The nextthree grades relate to varying levels of ability. The pinnacle of a referee’s ambition is to beclassed as an A grade referee. At this level youcould well find yourself being asked the refereeat the World Championships or a whole hostof other professional events.

All referees are constantly monitored to makesure they are at the top of the level to whichthey referee at, and to ensure that ourAssociation's standards as a whole do no dropfrom the exceptionally high level we have setourselves, be that level local league or theWorld Championships.

To find out more about the EPRA please seeout website www.epra8ball.org.uk

If you would like to ask any questions aboutthe EPRA or about the playing rules of theWorld Eight Ball Association, please [email protected]. A selection of yourquestions will be answered in the next issue ofthis magazine.

IPA qualifiers Carl Morris and Steve Thompsoncertainly made the most of their passage tothe European Championships in Malta. And the duo flew the flag superbly for the IPAin the face of some top class opposition.

Former world champion Carl Morris went allthe way to the final before losing by adeciding frame to local hero Clayton Attard.

The IPA’s other representat ive, SteveThompson, reached the last 16 only to lose toformer World Junior champion, Jordan Church- another prominent IPA player.

At one stage, both players suggested therewould be two qualifiers in the final whichwould have been some result.

However, congratulations to both our entries. They did us proud and also enjoyed a relaxingweek away from the table in the beautiful sur-rounds of St. Pauls Bay, staying at the 4-starDolmen Hotel.

Steve played against five different nationalitiesin his progress to the last 16, starting with a 6-5 win against Zach Taylor of Wales followedby a 6-2 defeat of Scotland’s Alan Scott. In thesecond round he faced a Tour opponent,Charly Verwaerde (France), but came out ontop 6-4.

Steve then enjoyed a great 6-3 win againstChris Tabone of Malta who had been one ofthe title favourites. With a bit more good for-tune he might have gone onto the quarters. However, Church (England), ranked 21 on theI.P.A. Tour, just took the deciding frame.

Our other contender, Carl Morris, started witha 6-2 win against Stuart Campbell (Scotland)and then defeated Arnaud Viard of France 6-3.

He removed Tony Kay (England) by 6-2- toearn a meeting with England skipper LeeKendall.

Carl came through 6-3 before taking out ClintAzzopardi of Malta in the quarters. As couldbe expected, the semi-finalists were top notchand Carl had no problems defeating AdamDavis by 7-2 before that thrilling defeat toClayton Attard in the deciding frame.

The atmosphere in the final was electric witha mass of home supporters giving greatsupport to Clayton who played the game ofhis life.

In a brilliant match either player could havetaken the title but on this occasion, Carl hadto accept second place.

COST-CUTTER!FRANKIE SAYS SUCCESS

CLUB OPEN 1 REPORT

38

Frank Costello claimed his first Club Open titleat Blackpool but you suspect it won't be hislast.

Indeed, you suspect a new pool star has arrivedon the baize in the shape of the 17-year-old Alevel student from London. And it may not belong before the talented teenager is winningMain Tour events.

Before he reached his 17th birthday earlier thismonth (April), Costello had won the World andEuropean Junior titles, reached his first ClubOpen final (losing to Craig Marsh) and then de-feated former snooker professional, RichardKing, 6-2 to claim a first ever Club success.

Not bad going for the youngster from Ken-nington who is also studying history, maths, bi-ology and religious studies.

"I lost to Craig Waddingham on the Main Tourand had to go straight back on to play my Clubmatch," Costello told World Pool.

"It wasn't easy and I nearly lost my head.

"I played Ian Duffy in the last 32 and could eas-ily have lost. The match went to a decider andfortunately I got through.

"After that I just tried to do my best and endedup winning.

"It was a good feeling because I lost to Craigin the final at Blackpool last year. So, to goback and win was pleasing."

Costello was born to play pool. Dad Jerry Tick-ell is chairman of the Greater London CountyPool Association and a more than capableplayer.

Young Frank has played the game most of hislife but began to take it seriously about fiveyears ago. It wasn't long before he was win-ning competitions and in the last two years hasreally started to blossom.

"I practice at JFK's Pool club near to where Ilive," he explained."And really when that opened I was able topractice on the way home from school."

Costello is clearly a bright prospect on and offthe table. He is studying for his A/S levels withthe probability of going to university to readhistory. He's certainly making history in thepool world.

The 19th World 8-Ball Championships atBlackpool in June will see him defend his worldjunior crown.

And eligible until 2012, he could emulate Dar-ren Matthew who won it three times in a row.

"Winning the world title is probably mybiggest achievement so far. I lost the previousyear so I knew in the Club that I could go backand do the same thing rather than fall at thefinal hurdle again."

For the moment, Costello's goals are moremodest. "I think I'm provisionally ranked insidethe top 64 on the Tour," he says.

"I just want to try and stay there now for therest of the season and make sure I am seedednext year."

And it will be a major surprise, you feel, if hedoesn't achieve thattarget.

HILL TOURING AGAINAS 2011 SET TO BE BUMPER YEAR FOR POOL

WELCOME TO THE TOUR 2

It doesn't seem he's ever been away but 2011 marks the return of the 'Machine' to the StrachanIPA Tour.

Mick Hill, world champion and one of eight ball's all-time greats, is back in action. And he's keen to make up for lost time.

Hill's comeback is a major shot in the arm to the IPA set-up as he only competed sparingly lastseason, despite his stunning world victory over Gareth Potts.

It may take him some time to catch up with the Tour's ranking leaders but Hill's return willensure it's even tougher to win a Tour than it's been for the past 12 months. There's still no Tour comeback in sight for Chris Melling but a number of other cuemen are backfor 2011.

Aberdeen based Richard Cradduck had to suspend his dues after a serious accident but happilyleast number of professionals leaving the Tour since it started.

THE PROFESSIONAL EVENTS

FIRST COUSINS REMOVEDAND CUP OF WOE TOO FOR POTTS

There will be new winners of two of thisseason's IPA professional events after surprisedefeats for two defending champions.

Certainly, Tom Cousins will regret not beingable to mount a stiffer challenge in theProfessional Cup. The Hereford based star wasdelighted by last year's success over AdamDavis in the final.

However, he failed to get beyond the last 32stage of this year's competition; the earlyrounds played during Tour One at Blackpool.

Cousins went down 8-0 to former Europeanchampion Oly Bale who is one of five playersguaranteed their place in the quarter-finals tobe played at Tour Four at the end of August.

Bale followed up by beating fellow WelshmenBen Davies 8-5 and next meets 1998 worldchampion Carl Morris.

Morris has certainly found his form in 2011having reached the European Championshipfinal in Malta. And here he enjoyed excellentwins over Warren Hodgson and MarcFarnsworth. Both matches ended 8-6.

Bristol's Ben Flack, like Cousins, is another oflast season's champions. However, thereigning European Professional title holdercrashed out 8-6 against Steven Kane.

The last 32 also brought defeat for reigningworld champion Mick Hill. His demise to AdamDavis wasn't a major shock but the Stoke star'smargin of victory-8-3-was a surprise.Davis next plays Lee Kendall or James Croxtonwhile Gareth Potts takes on Ian Hubbard in thelast 32.

Those latter two games will be concluded thisweekend and so too will be another meetingbetween Kevin Barton and Rob Chilton. Theyclashed in the last 16 of the Vauxhall GrandPrix where Barton edged through 8-7.

Potts will be looking for a longer stay in theProfessional Cup than he managed in theVauxhall Grand Prix.

The former world champion opened up withan impressive 8-4 win over Marc Farnsworthbut then came unstuck against Cousins, losing8-5. Flack didn't fare any better in the GrandPrix than he had done in the Professional Cup,losing 8-7 to Adam Davis who has designs onthe professional number one spot this year.

Davis now plays Cousins in a repeat of lastseason's Professional Cup final. Indeed, theduo enjoyed several intriguing matches in2010 and their VGP quarter-final should be nodifferent.

Former world champion Phil Harrison is alsothrough to the last eight. Knocked out of theProfessional Cup by Clint I'Anson, he defeatedJez Graham 8-6 to earn a match-up againstBarton.

Such is the competitive nature of theprofessional ranks that no player so far isguaranteed to be in both quarters. And that'swhy prolific Professional winner RonanMcCarthy is pleased to still be in contention.

McCarthy defeated Steven Kane 8-6 and AndyJones 8-4. But he's now waiting for a log jamof matches to be completed before he knowswhether he'll face Morray Dolan, Neil Toms orLee Clough in the quarter-finals at the GoldenCue weekend in May.
