Here are our top takeaways from day two of the conference: Premium department store retailers are investing in regionally tailored, boutique- like stores. Inditex implemented radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to digitally track its products and, so, improve business operations and the customer experience. Investments in technology can be “peanuts” compared with the return they provide for retailers. The Coresight Research team is attending World Retail Congress 2018, which is taking place in Madrid April 17–19. Here, we feature our takeaways from the second day of the conference. Reinventing Department Stores On day two of World Retail Congress, we heard from two executives at premium- positioned department store retailers that have been overhauling their proposition in order to increase their relevance. Juan Carlos Escribano, CEO of Mexican department store chain El Palacio de Hierro, outlined his company’s strategy of curating stores for specific cities and communities. The company seeks to create distinct, quality stores under a model that contrasts with the conventional flagship-and-branch model most department stores use. El Palacio de Hierro’s regional stores have various themes—such as wellness, design and gastronomy, and the ocean—that align with their respective locations and the demands of local

shoppers.Thecompany’sSantaFestore,forexample,hasawellnessthemeandfeaturesa17,500-square-metergympluscomplementaryservicessuchasorganicfood.

StaceyCartwright,DeputyChairmanofHarveyNichols,saidthathercompanydoesnotconsideritselfadepartmentstore,butalargeboutique.Thedifferenceismarkedbyheightenedlevelsofpersonalizedservice,greateraffinityfortheretailerbycustomersandcustomers’expectationthattheywillfindauniqueofferingatHarveyNichols.

FourbrandvaluesunderpinnedHarveyNichols’physicalanddigitaloverhaul:beingobsessedwithstyle,playfulinattitude,daringindeliveryanddevotedtothecustomer.Theretailer’sphysicaltransformationincludedadoptingnewstoreformatsthatabandonedtraditionaldepartmentstorewalkwaysinfavorofallowingshopperstofindtheirownpaththroughthestore.Thecompanyalsoincorporatedmodernandindustrialmaterialsalongwithtraditionalmaterialsinstores.

HarveyNichols’newerdigitaltoolsincludeitsRewardsapp,whichhasdrivenstrongengagementbyofferingshoppershigh-valueexperiencesasincentives.Recently,ithasalsomadein-storestylistsavailablethroughmobiledevices,includingthroughlivestreamedvideothatshopperscanwatch.

DiversityUnderDiscussionBoardroomdiversity,andparticularlygenderdiversity,wasthesubjectofapaneldiscussiononthemorningofdaytwoatWorldRetailCongress.

• VeronikaPountcheva,GlobalDirectorofCorporateResponsibilityatMetroGroup,notedthatinvestorsareincreasinglyquestioningfirmsaboutthediversityoftheirworkforces.Indiscussinggenderquotasforcompanyboards,Pountchevagaveananalogytogolf:ingolf,ifyouwanttoimproveyourhandicap,youpractice,andquotasgivefirmsachancetoundertakepractice—tolookoutsidethecompanywhenhiring,reviewtheirrecruitmentpracticesandlookathowdiversityisrecognizedintheirdailywork.

• WendySiu,FounderandPresidentofhomeinteriorsfirmHeather&March,arguedthattorecruitwomentoboards,firmshavetoensurethattheyhaveenoughwomeninmiddleandseniormanagement.InAsia,Siusaid,itisdifficultforfirmstofindtherightwomenforboardmembershipsnotbecauseofdiscrimination,butbecausetraditionalAsianvalueskeepmanywomenfromseekingsuchchoices.

• Siurecognizedthat,withoutquotas,progressongenderrepresentationmaybeslow,butshesuggestedthatquotasshouldbeadjustedinconsiderationoflocalfactorsandthattheycouldcausefrictioninsomecountries.

DigitalizingProductsIvánEscuderoRial,HeadofRFIDatInditex,discussedhowhisfirmhasimplementedRFIDtechnologytodigitallytrackitsproductsand,so,improvebusinessoperationsandthecustomerexperience.RialnotedthatInditexfacessomechallengesinmanagingitsstock.Thecompanyhaslowvolumesofeachsizeofproductineachstore,butmatchingleaninventorywithhighprofitscanbetough.Meanwhile,thedemandsofstoreoperationsincludemanaginginventoriesacrosssalesandreturns,fittingroomsandreplenishments.

InditexdecidedtodeployRFIDtechnologywithinthesecuritytagsthatareappliedtoproductsbysuppliers(otheroptionsincludedembeddingRFIDtagsinclothinglabelsoronpricetags).TheretailerdevelopedaproprietarytagwithsecuritytaggingfirmTyco.TheRFIDtagsareencodedenmasseinInditex’sdistributioncenters,andareremovedatthepointofpurchase,meaningtheycanbereturnedtosuppliersandthenattachedtonewgarments.

Inditex’sstorestrackwhethergarmentsareinthestockroomorontheshopfloor,andfloorstaffcommunicatewithstockroomstafftocheckavailabilityusingWhatsApp.ThetechnologyenablesInditextoreplenishstoresfasterandcollectmoreinformationonshrinkage.

Rialsummarizedthein-storebenefitsofRFIDasimprovingworkforstaffandprovidingbettershoppingexperiencesforcustomers.

CheapTechTechcanbe“cheapashell,”arguedEugeneRoman,EVPofDigitalExcellenceatCanadianTire,citingbotsthatcanbedevelopedforaslittleas$15,000.Retailisaslim-margin,nonrecurring-businesssector,andretailersshouldbuildmachinestohelpwithit,hesaid.Thoseinvestmentscanbe“peanuts”comparedwiththereturntheyprovide,Romansaid,notingthatretailersshouldaskthemselves,“Canwedothiscosteffectively?”

Anumberofyearsago,CanadianTiredecidedalgorithmicretailwasthefuture.Now,thefirmusesmorethan200activebotstohelprunthecompany.ItclaimsoneofthebestpatternanalysisteamsinCanadaandemploysacognitivescienceteam.
