1) Brief account of your experience in addiction and in recovery (1 page only):For most of my life I was at a normal weight, but I've always suffered from the mental part of this disease. As a child I hadoverwhelming fear and anxiety. I had very poor social skills and preferred being by myself over being with others. I easedsome of the discomfort of my anxiety by leaning heavily on my mom and then eventually leaning heavily on my spouse. Idivorced when I was 33, in 2003, and my disease really took off at that point. I went from normal weight to morbidlyobese within in a year. I suffered from severe depression and was placed on psych medications and hospitalized severaltimes for suicidal ideations. I was diagnosed with diabetes when I was about 35 years old but I could not adhere to adiabetic diet so I chose to ignore the fact that I had diabetes. In November of 2008 I was having problems with my vision. My doctor informed me that I was losing my vision because my diabetes was out of control. She sent me to a diabeticnurse where I weighed in at 264 pounds. That nurse restricted my carbohydrate intake and I began to lose weight but Ialso lost any will to live. In December of 2008 I made two very serious suicide attempts back to back. In March 2009, mytherapist who I had been seeing for over 5 years asked me to find a group therapist. I googled group therapists and pickedone who had groups on Thursday nights. After my second session with him he asked me to go check out a 12 step meetingbecause he thought there may have been some addiction issues in my family of origin. He gave me a trifold for FA. I wentto a meeting and had hope for the first time in years that my life could be better. I was deathly afraid to get a sponsor so Ijust went to meetings for several weeks. In that time period I lost my job in a fit of rage and was finally ready to try to FA.I started with my sponsor on April S, 2009 and by the grace of God have been abstinent ever since.

That first year of abstinence was very difficult. I had to learn to sit through many things including bone crushing cravingsto eat when I was uncomfortable, extreme fatigue, shakes, headaches, panic attacks, and the awakening of my emotionsthat I had deadened with food for years. Fortunately I did not have to do this alone. I did every tool every day. I wasbolstered by conversations with fellows who had experienced what I was going through. They told me it would get better. They shared with me how they prayed. They helped me to practice gratitude. They told me that the only thing I had to dowas not eat and God would take care of everything else. They were right. Life got better. I got off my psych meds with the help of my psychiatrist. I got a full time job. I began to repair damaged relationships with my friends and families. Ibecame part of a fellowship. I began to work the steps in an AWOL. After my first 5th step I used the help of a therapist todiscover my hidden self and began my transition into a male body. It was around this time in my recovery that I hadmentioned to my sponsor that I didn't feel like one among many in FA. She suggested I join intergroup. At that time Ilived about 5 hours away from Boston. I reached out to committee chairs as how to get involved from a distance and Goddid take care of the rest. Long distance call in to committee meetings was established and circumstances aligned just rightin February 2011, so I was able to move just 100 miles from Boston. I've been attending intergroup since. I now not onlyhave the support of my local fellowship but I have a strong community of fellows through intergroup. My support systemhas also expanded outside of FA to include a church community and a hiking group. My emotions have evened out and my

Page 15: World Service Board Applications – 2016 Business Convention... · Full Name: Ebony F. Date continuous FA abstinence began: Address: 660 Canyon Oaks Drive, #E City, State/Province:

anxiety has decreased significantly. I'm able to tolerate discomfoft by quietly asking god for help. Ite also found that themore I give in service, the more I get back and the happier my life is.

2) Seruice positions held at the group and intergroup level (tl2 page only):I am currently the chair of the EAI Service Group Suppoft Committee. I have held that position since June 2015. Ourcommittee is responsible for hosting the Service Suppoft Weekend held in November. In 2015 we had approximately 190members aftend our two day event at the Holiday Inn in Dedham, MA. In 2015 we introduced a new format to the SlrviceSuppoft Weekend that was well received. In addition to several general sessions we offered multiple breakout sessionsthroughout the day' allowing members to choose which interactive session they would like to attend. We added seruicepositions called "Shepherds" and "Room Marshalls" to help direct members to the appropriate rooms and to ensure oursessions stafted on time. We tried to make our event as user friendly and as fun as possible because often these types ofevents can be stressful to food addicts.

I serued as chair of the EAI connection Committee from November 2013 to May 2015. During that time our committeecontinued to assist areas in conducting connection writing sessions. Our committee also assisted the WSI connectionCommittee in conducting a sun ey to determine interest in a digital version of the connection,

I serued as a member of the EAI Seruice Group Suppoft Committee from February 2011 to May 2013.

At my local group level I have held these various positions at various times: meeting secretaly, meeting scribe, treasurer, literature, EAI contact, WSI contact, connection Representative, meeting contact, and greeter.

Education, business, professional or other experiences and skills that would be useful as officer or chair (1/2 page). pleasedo not send your r6sum6.I have my Bachelo/s Degree in broadcast communications and my Master's Degree in marriage and family counseling. Ihave worked for over 20 years'in the medical finance industry. I'm currently a Lead Claims Rlsolution Specialist for i6epatient accounting department of a hospital. My current position requires me to have an exacting attention to detail, to behighly organized, and to be able to efficiently multi-task. I have several years of superuisory experience. I have workedseveral years in the budget and finance depaftment of a hospital where I acquired excellent planning experience andextensive knowledge of Microsoft Excel. As Chair of the EAI Seruice Support Committee I helped our committee plan theEAI Seruice Suppoft Weekend in November of 2015.

Your thoughts on the following: aspects of the committee's current work you would emphasize; to the best of your ability, adescription of your vision for the committee's work.

I think the committee has done an excellent job in organizing the business conventions I have attended. The sub-commiftee chairs are key in overseeing each individual aspect to the conventions. I look forward to developingrelationships with each of the sub-committee chairs and to help them to be able to continue their excellent work.

As an addict I find the conventions to be stressful and overwhelming. I would like the committee to continue to work tomake these gatherings as stress free as possible so we can protect our most valuable asset, our abstinence. I would likethe committee to consider some of the following ideas: explore a possible change in the format of the rides and lodging listto make it more user friendly; explore opportunities for newer members to hear more qualifications; explore offeringliterature for sale so members don't have to incur the cost of shipping; explore the possibility of a quiet room for memberswho do not have a hotel room to relax and get quiet; explore expanding the use of greeters throughout the hotel to helpmembers find their way more easily; explore using "shepherds" to help members move from one event to the other and tohelp events staft on time; explore possibility of allow members to opt to receive the information folder in a pdf file to viewon their phone to use less paper.

Reference for Gabe Enz, candidate for WSI Convention Committee Chair

I have known Gabe since his earliest days of abstinence, and have had the opportunity to work with him

at Eastern Area Intergroup since he moved to Northampton and came within driving distance of EAl. lt

has been an honor and a pleasure to watch him grow from a desperate and willing newcomer into a

generous, competent, accountable, and highly effective FA servant (and, still, a willing recovering food

addict!). Gabe's successes as the Chair of the Service Group Support Committee are highly visible and

irrefutable. The outstanding November Service Weekend is reflection not only of his strong

organizational skills, but of his ability to collaborate with a large and diverse team of FA members. One

thing I particularly appreciated was how many individuals he involved in that program. He had

volunteers from alloverthe EAlgeography, and he allowed each of them to have ownership of their job

or project. Anyone who attended the event couldn't fail to notice that each person staffing a table,

guiding foot traffic, keeping time, or leading a meeting knew the purpose of their work and felt good

about doing it. He was thoughtful about the goals of the weekend and wholeheartedly pursued an

innovative strategy to make the weekend one of active engagement, rather than passive listening, for

our attendees. Gabe is entrepreneurial and willing to try new things. He and a fellow were given the job,

some years back, of managing the literature table at Chapter Support/Service Support Weekend.

Somehow, they made picking up literature not just a chore, but a pleasure -- with accurate accounting to

boot. Their enthusiasticembrace of their roles led to them launching the literature table at EAI

(something we have not previously had). Needless to say, it has been a great boon for EAI and I could

not be more grateful for Gabe's part in that. I believe that Gabe would be an outstanding Convention

Committee Chair. lt's a big job, and one that requires humility, maturity, collaboration, and diplomacy,

along with creativity, passion, and accountability, allof which Gabe has displayed at EAl. I highly

recommend him for the role and would be glad to provide additional perspective if it would be helpful.

Sincerely,

Courtney G.

My name is Cindy Parker. I have been an abstinent FA member for nearly L5 years and have participatedin service at EAlfor allof that time. lwas privileged to meet Gabe about seven years ago. We servedtogether on what was then called the Chapter Support Committee. While the committee had multipleways to serye, a primary task was to organize and deliver an annual business /support weekend. Gabewas always willing to roll up his sleeves in any way necessary and always with his trademark sense ofhumor. He went on to serve as Connection Chair when called upon, and to my delight returned to SGSC

as chair. Gabe was at the helm and navigated our committee through a tremendously successful

weekend that was attended by over two hundred people. His eye for detail and ability to value eachcommittee member made our monthly planning meetings productive, inclusive, and very enjoyable.Gabe has true leadership ability. He is tireless, creative and calming under pressure. I know he wouldbring these qualities to the WSO Conference Committee and am excited to think of the wonderfulweekend FA would experience under Gabe's leadership

Most Sincerely,

Cindy Parker

Reference for Gabe - WSB Convention Chair

I am very pleased and grateful to be writing this reference for Gabe to serve as Convention Chair for FA's

WSB. over the past fewyears I have known Gabe to have a solid foundation of abstinence and recoveryin FA, and I have experienced working with him in at the Intergroup level while Gabe chaired the EAI

Support Weekend.

I have known Gabe. to be a dependable and vital person in every way. He is always willing to be ofservice and to go to any length to give back the recovery he has received in this program. He is one thatis open to listening and yet strong in his own convictions. He is someone that is experienced in workingwith others at his work and I believe that is very important quality for the job of Convention CommitteeChair. I believe Gabe would be perfect for the job and I would highly recommend him.
