ESL Course Offerings

• 28-30 Sections each Fall and Spring

• Three distinct levels (Beginning, Low-Intermediate, High-Intermediate)

• Four subject areas (Conversation, Vocabulary, Reading, Composition)

Foreign Language OfferingsJCTC Typically Offers:

• 14 Sections of Spanish each Fall & Spring at four different levels

• 4-5 Sections German at two levels

• 4-5 Sections of French at three levels

• 4-5 sections of Sign Language

• Have offered Russian and Arabic once!

• Hope to offer Chinese in near future

Impetus for New Initiatives

• Part of efforts to internationalize/globalize the curriculum and the college

• Large private gift of $1.3 million for improving the delivery of foreign language and ESL

• These funds will allow the creation of a new Center for Language and ESL Studies

• All current and new second language projects will flow through this Center

ESL Initiatives

• Implementation of nationally standardized entrance and exit exam for the ESL sequence

• Developing a three-track approach to ESL instruction (Industry Training track, College Credential track, Workforce Development Training track)

• Exploring possibility of an Intensive ESL Program (IESL) at JCTC

ESL Initiatives cont.

• Creation of a dedicated computer lab in the new Center with a small resource center (reference books, textbooks, word games etc.)

• Development of Summer American Studies Program (partnering with Sister Cities of Louisville)

Foreign Language InitiativesOn-Line Language Instruction

• Using a blended approach with both synchronous and asynchronous coursework

• Used eLluminate but are making transition to Wimba

• Wimba uses VOIP technology for multi-person voice conferencing (live, real-time)

• Students and instructor can record on Voiceboard or write or type text which all students can see

On-Line Foreign Language cont.

• Ancillary textbook sites are also used

• Will be looking to do a dual-credit on-line Spanish course through Kentucky Virtual High School

Foreign Language ITV Initiatives

• Creation of dedicated ITV Lab in new Center for delivering language classes to multiple sites

• Will allow college to deliver language instruction to our rural campuses

• Concentrating on French and German • Hopefully will allow for English and Chinese

classes between JCTC and Jiu Jiang Technical University

Foreign Language cont.

• Developing French Study Abroad to Montpellier, France (a Louisville Sister City) for Summer 2008

• Down the road may create an ASL connection with Montpellier as well

ESL Student Service

• Developing a program where advisors from One-Stop Centers including Career counseling will have presence in new Center

• Will create a referral system for immigrant, refugee, and asylee students dealing with adjustment and mental health issues
