January 4th- At 11 am, the Armistice was signed bringing the war to an end.

July 28th -Austria declared war on Serbia.

August 3rd-Germany declared war on France.

June 28th - Francis Ferdinand assassinated at Sarajevo.

April 6th-USA declares war on Germany

August 5th-The Germans captured Warsaw from the Russians.

January 19th- The first Zeppelin raid on Britain took place

February 21stStart of the Battle of Verdun

April 29th-British forces surrender to Turkish forces .

29th April -Chemin des Dames Offensive ends losing 250,000 casualties.

1914 – How It Began• On June 28th,1914. Archduke Franz

Ferdinand, was assassinated in Sarajevo. He was shot by a Serbian terrorist Gavrilo Princip right after leaving the Town Hall.

1915 – The Great Zeppelin Raid• On January 19th, The very first Zeppelin raid took

place. 2 German zeppelins (L.3 and L.4) dropped bombs into England. 9 people were killed and some buildings were damaged.

The Battle of Verdun• The Battle of Verdun started on February 21st,

1916 and ended on December 16th, in 1916.The Battle of Verdun was the LONGEST single battle fought in World War I.

• Over 700,000 soldiers were wounded, dead, or missing during this time.

The Battle of the Somme• The Battle of the Somme started on July 1st, 1916

and lasted until November 1916. The French had lost many men during the Battle of Verdun, so, the Commander decided to attack Germany from the north of Verdun in order for the Germans to move their men away from the battlefield thus giving the French Army a break.

• The Germans nearly 500,000.• The British Army suffered 420,000 casualties,

and the French lost 200,000 men. • 1,738,000 shells were fired at the Germans
