2. Literature Review – Individual (10%) Report Due: Softcopy Wednesday Week 5 (20th August) AND Hardcopy Week 5 tutorial Length: 1500 Words Task You are required to conduct a systematic literature review on online educational environments and a comparative analysis of different online educational environments. Method Carry out an extensive research on online educational environments, providing detailed background studies and discussion (i.e. current trends, supporting technologies benefits, issues, challenges, etc). You will also need to identify at least 3 different online educational environments, providing details (purposes, features, functionalities, etc.) and compare them in an analytical manner. You should support your analysis with related literature. Suggested questions to attempt when comparing the online educational environments: - What makes the system effective? - What types of information are provided? Why? - What are the benefits to the users? Use the marking criteria of the assessment to ensure that you cover the requirements of this task. Suggested Readings:

1. Craig, E.M. 2007, ‘Changing paradigms: managed learning environments and Web 2.0’, Campus - Wide Information Systems, vol. 24 no. 3, pp. 152-161 (Subject Electronic Readings).

2. Appana, S. 2008, ‘A Review of Benefits and Limitations of Online Learning in the Context of the Student, the Instructor, and the Tenured Faculty’, International Journal on ELearning, vol.7, no.1, pp. 5-22 (Proquest5000 database).

3. Web Design Project – Group work (40%) Instructions: • 4 or 5 in a group - Your tutor will use their discretion if class sizes are uneven. - Students are not permitted to do this work “alone”. Learn to utilise one another’s strengths. Division of labour, delegation, and team work is essential in industry. • The assessment is divided into 3 parts. Main Question You are required to develop a NEW educational website for academic/training staff to conduct and students to participate in learning activities in an online environment. Your website may be for any educational context (e.g. high school, university, industry training). Method Please include all of the submitted files (including design consideration report) in a folder named as: “group_name”

The web application will be tested under the path: http://localhost/ group_name /default.htm Please compress the program components using winzip/winrar software. The compressed file should be named as:

group_name.zip/rar Additional Notes Marks are awarded equally to each member in the same group regardless of work distribution. In the event of any grievance, students should highlight the problem to their respective tutors at least 1 week before the assignment due date. Marks will then be awarded accordingly. *Teamwork and cooperation is important in any group project. Any internal problem should be effectively dealt with within the group and the above mentioned should be avoided.

a. Project Design Consideration (15%) Report Due: Softcopy Wednesday Week 11 (8th October) AND Hardcopy Week 11 tutorial Length: 2000-3000 Words Task The intention of this assignment is to build upon your previous literature review to produce a detailed document describing the construction and maintenance of a proposed online educational environment. Method You are required to write a report on the design considerations of your proposed website. Based on your previous individual literature review, you are also required to conduct a further comparative analysis on current online educational environments with the website which your group will be designing. Your report will include the proposal (i.e. identify target audience), related literature research on why your educational website is needed and why it is important. Your report will also include the information architecture, content management plan, screenshots, and how information is presented on your website. You are also required to attach a “task distribution list” with the report. Use the marking criteria of the assessment to ensure that you cover the requirements of this task. Refer to the lecture notes and additional readings for discussions on the design considerations of a website.
