W3C: Guiding Principles and Domains of work

• Web technologies should be interoperable– large palette of Web technologies exists– no single technology cover all needs– ...thus interoperability is required

• The Web is universal and is for everybody– regardless of language, user capabilities, devices, or

geographical location

• Four domains of work: Architecture, Interaction,Technology and Society and Web Accessibility– currently some 40 active working groups

Current Status of Web Standardization

• W3C continues to develop well-established Webtechnologies, expanding to new areas when needed

• Some well-known and established work areas:– Browser Web (URI, HTTP, XHTML etc., Styles, Graphics ...)– Data Management (XML, XML Schema, XSL, ...)– Accessible Web for All (WAI, WCAG, ...)

• Some new or forthcoming work areas:– Voice-enabled Web (VoiceXML, ...)– Web Services (SOAP, WSDL, WS Choreography)– Semantic Web (RDF, OWL) best practices– Printing, Usability, ...

• To date, W3C has produced some 80recommendations – there is more to be done
