Worm geared motors feature Lenze standard IECframe 3 phase a.c. motors. These are described indetail on pages 4 to 5. Mounting is B14 face up toframe size 100, then B5 flange on frames 112 and 132.

Helical worm geared motors feature 3 phase a.c.motors with an integral gearbox flange on the frontface of the motor. This is known as B9 mounting andresults in a shorter build length. Three thermalswitches also known as thermostats or klixons, arefitted as standard in the motor windings.

Motor nominal currents for helical worm gearedmotors at 50 Hz supply are given below:

Selection1. From a knowledge of the application, derive the

nominal power P(kW) and gearbox output torque M(Nm) required. These two parameters are connected by the formula:

where n is the geared motor output speed in r/min.If the motor is to be run at ambient temperaturesabove 40°C or heights above 1000 m, apply aderating factor as shown on the previous page. Inpractice efficiency losses result in the motor powersignificantly exceeding the nominal power.

2. Estimate the required service factor Co based on:a. the type of application as described in

Table 1 on the facing page.

then

b. the running time and starting frequency as described in Table 2 on the facing page.

3. Estimate the service factor Kt based on ambient temperature and running time from table 3.For the next stage of selection, use the greater of the two factors Co or Kt, neglecting the other.

4. Now turn to the selection tables following and start with the next motor power above your derived power P(kW). Due to gearbox efficiency itmay be necessary to go higher in power to achieve the required torque.

Apply the rule:

Sometimes making a small change to output speed will allow an improvement in service factor and a valid selection.

5. Check radial load capacity of the chosen gearbox against actual loads as described on page 91. Note an additional factor is required if the load is not in the middle of the shaft.

6. Choose the Stockline number for the mounting you required, free shaft or hollow shaft output. Items shaded blue are normally available from our Bedford stock. Allow time for our workshop to assembly. Other deliveries and prices can be obtained from our Sales Department. Specify the mounting configuration and terminal box position from page 100.

ExampleA geared motor with free shaft output is required todrive a conveyor that has a load of 480 Nm at aspeed of 18 r/min. The duty is 8 hours/day with 12starts/hour, 80% running time in an ambient of 40°C.A 250 mm pitch chain sprocket is to be fitted to theoutput shaft.

M = 480 Nm

Nominal power P = 480 x 140 = 0.90 kW9550

A conveyor is load class B. The service factor Co for8 hours/day and 12 starts/hour is 1.4.

The service factor Kt for 40°C and 80% running timeis 1.25.

Therefore the dominant service factor is Co = 1.4.

Checking the 1.1 kW selections, models at 17 r/mindo not permit 480 Nm output torque. Therefore go upto 1.5 kW.

At 18 r/min we select the model 52.120.10-90L/4.This has a service factor of 1.9, more than adequatefor the application.

For a 250 mm chain sprocket fitted to the middle ofthe shaft, the radial force is:

Fr = 2000 x 480 x 1.4 = 5376 N250

This is well within the gearbox capacity of 10.8 kN.

70 Hz inverter technologyThe Lenze series 8200 inverter allows

optimised selections of geared motors at70 Hz with major advantages

● Wider speed range – extra speed rangeavailable even without blowers

● Increased ventilation – from self ventilated motors for cooler running andlonger life

Stockline selections of geared motor units are givenat both 50 & 70 Hz. When inverters are to be used forvariable speed drives choose the 70 Hz values.

50 Hz – standard mains frequency results in a 4 polemotor running at 1500 r/min synchronous speed,actual speed 1410 – 1450 r/min.70 Hz – optimised frequency available using theLenze 8200 inverters.Speed range – for self ventilated motors the speedrange is 20 – 70 Hz. Intermittent running at lowerspeeds is possible or a blower can be supplied forcontinuous running down to very low speeds.

70 Hz inverter technology

At 50 Hz the maximum torque available over arange 0 – 50 Hz is two times motor torquemultiplied by the gear ratio of 10. This gives atorque of 214 Nm.

At 70 Hz with a gear ratio of 14, a higher nominaltorque of 153 Nm is available 0 – 50 Hz. Themaximum torque is two times this figure at 306 Nm. Torque reserve reduces above 50 Hz.

Stockline selectionsGeared motor selection pages give performancevalues at both 50 and 70 Hz. For fixed speedapplications use the data in the 50 Hz column.

For variable speed applications using the Lenze 8200inverters select from the 70 Hz columns. This willgive the advantages of increased torque capacity andwider speed range.

ExampleConsider the selection of a geared with power 0.75 kWand output speed 900 r/min. The fixed speed selectionat 50 Hz is model 12.621.08, Stockline no. G5-452 393.For variable speed applications using the Lenze series8200 inverter the optimum selection is a 70 Hz, G5-200

271. Note that both selections give the same speed,same torque and use the same size of gearbox.However the 70 Hz selection can run from 257 – 901r/min without a blower. The torque reserve and startingtorque rise from 15.6 to 22 Nm.
