PASTOR’SLETTER The Mysteries of the Rosary Chapter 55: The Third Luminous Mystery—The Proclama!on of the Kingdom of God and Call to Conversion, con!nued… “As for what was sown on good soil, this is he who hears the word and understands it; he indeed bears fruit,
and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty” (Ma#hew 13:23).
As we con!nue looking together at Jesus’s first parable about the Kingdom of Heaven (Kingdom of God) in Chapter 13 of the Gospel of Saint Ma#hew, let’s thank God for the many ways he makes it possible for people to “hear the word.” For two thousand years, the Gospel has been made known in innumerable ways.
One way is the witness of how Chris!ans live. True followers of Jesus Christ live in some ways like other people, but in other ways their lives are very different. This is explained eloquently in the anonymous “Le#er to Diognetus,” wri#en in the 2nd Century. It appears in the Office of Readings of the Liturgy of the Hours for Wednesday of the 5th Week of Easter.
Chris!ans are indis!nguishable from other men either by na!onality, language or customs. They do not inhabit separate ci!es of their own, or speak a strange dialect, or follow some outlandish way of life. Their teaching is not based upon reveries inspired by the curiosity of men. Unlike some other people, they champion no purely human doctrine. With regard to dress, food and manner of life in general, they follow the customs of whatever city they happen to be living in, whether it is Greek or foreign.
And yet there is something extraordinary about their lives. They live in their own countries as though they were only passing through. They play their full role as ci!zens, but labor under all the disabili!es of aliens. Any country can be their homeland, but for them their homeland, wherever it may be, is a foreign country. Like others, they marry and have children, but they do not expose them. They share their meals, but not their wives. They live in the flesh, but they are not governed by the desires of the flesh. They pass their days upon earth, but they are ci!zens of heaven. Obedient to the laws, they yet live on a level that transcends the law. Chris!ans love all men, but all men persecute them. Condemned because they are not understood, they are put to death, but raised to life again. They live in poverty, but enrich many; they are totally des!tute, but possess an abundance of everything. They suffer
dishonor, but that is their glory. They are defamed, but vindicated. A blessing is their answer to abuse, deference their response to insult. For the good they do they receive the punishment of malefactors, but even then they rejoice, as though receiving the gi' of life. They are a#acked by the Jews as aliens, they are persecuted by the Greeks, yet no one can explain the reason for this hatred.
To speak in general terms, we may say that the Chris!an is to the world what the soul is to the body. As the soul is present in every part of the body, while remaining dis!nct from it, so Chris!ans are found in all the ci!es of the world, but cannot be iden!fied with the world. As the visible body contains the invisible soul, so Chris!ans are seen living in the world, but their religious life remains unseen. The body hates the soul and wars against it, not because of any injury the soul has done it, but because of the restric!on the soul places on its pleasures. Similarly, the world hates the Chris!ans, not because they have done it any wrong, but because they are opposed to its enjoyments.
Chris!ans love those who hate them just as the soul loves the body and all its members despite the body’s hatred. It is by the soul, enclosed within the body, that the body is held together, and similarly, it is by the Chris!ans, detained in the world as in a prison, that the world is held together. The soul, though immortal, has a mortal dwelling place; and Chris!ans also live for a !me amidst perishable things, while awai!ng the freedom from change and decay that will be theirs in heaven. As the soul benefits from the depriva!on of food and drink, so Chris!ans flourish under persecu!on. Such is the Chris!an’s lo'y and divinely appointed func!on, from which he is not permi#ed to excuse himself.

The Eucharis!c Adora!on Chapel is now available to commi#ed adorers only at this !me. The Adora!on Chapel Door will be locked, and may only be entered by using the keypad code.
Capacity is set at two non-related people OR one family in the Adora!on Chapel per scheduled hour. Adorers need to adhere to their scheduled hour(s) only.
As we currently have open hours with no commi#ed adorer, Adora!on will be in front of the Tabernacle where the Blessed Sacrament will be reposed. Every hour must be covered with at least one, and preferably two commi#ed adorers before the Blessed Sacrament can be exposed.
If you have ques!ons regarding Adora!on please contact Sharon Hedman at 763-315-0202. If you are interested in commi-ng to a specific hour, please call Char Vecellio at 651-336-6630 to commit to an hour of prayer each week in the Adora!on Chapel.
When leaving the chapel, Adorers will be required to disinfect the area in which they sat as well as any door handles.
We are so grateful to Be#y Kreuter who has generously served as the Eucharis!c
Adora!on Chapel Coordinator for many years! Thank you, Be#y - we appreciate your faithful dedica!on and your servant heart! God bless and reward you!
Thank you to Sharon Hedman and Char Vecellio who have very graciously volunteered to take over as coordinators, assisted by Teresa Tawil.

UPCOMING EVENTS Consecra!on to St. Joseph
“I did not understand him well enough, but that will change.” In the 16th century, St. John of the Cross, one of the greatest mys!cs of the Church, humbly acknowledged that he lacked a proper understanding of the greatness of St. Joseph. Inspired by the tremendous love that his friend, St. Teresa of Avila, had for St. Joseph, St. John of the Cross made a firm resolu!on to get to know and love St. Joseph be#er.
What about you? How well do you know St. Joseph? Would you like to have a deeper friendship, or understanding of this Saint, so quiet in speech but so powerful in purity, charity, faith, courage and prayer, that one of his !tles is “Terror of Demons”?
This event is primarily aimed at individuals’ considera!on of a personal consecra!on to Saint Joseph. For others it will be a great 6 session book club. An informa!onal mee!ng will be held on Monday July 13th, 7 pm, Marian Hall, at The Church of St. Raphael.
If you have any ques!ons, call Phil Rief at 612-280-4565 or email him at: [email protected]
MASS / SAINT OF THE DAY

SAINT OF THE DAY – SAINT IRENAEUS OF LYONS Irenaeus was born about the year 125 in Asia Minor, now part of Turkey, then part of the Roman Empire. When he was a boy he got to know Saint Polycarp, the bishop of Smyrna, who had known Saint John the Apostle. From Polycarp he heard stories of what John and the other apostles did and taught. From this, Irenaeus passed on the apostolic tradi!on to a new genera!on, as has happened in the Catholic Church in every century ever since Our Lord Jesus Christ walked the earth. Irenaeus received an excellent educa!on in Rome, where he studied the Bible and Greek philosophy and literature. He then became one of the first missionaries to Gaul, now called France. There he was made the second bishop of the diocese of Lyons. Irenaeus was also known as a peacemaker. (In fact, his name comes from the Greek word for “peace.”) He travelled to Rome to urge Pope Eleutherius to be forgiving of members of the Montanist heresy, which was ac!ve in Irenaeus’ na!ve land. Irenaeus was also asked to mediate in a dispute between the Pope and a group of Chris!ans in Asia Minor called the “Quartodecimans” who were celebra!ng Easter on a different day than was done in Rome and elsewhere. The Pope had threatened to excommunicate the Quartodecimans if they didn’t adopt the Roman date of Easter. Irenaeus convinced the Pope to let them keep their Easter custom. (They eventually adopted the Roman date of Easter anyway, without any pressure from the Pope, at the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD.) Irenaeus also wrote books about the faith of the apostles, and refu!ng Gnos!cism, a religious system that was a#rac!ng many people at the !me. The Gnos!cs claimed that the visible world was created and governed by angels, and that God (whom they called the “Demiurge”) stayed aloof from crea!on. Irenaeus’ most famous and influen!al book—which you can s!ll read today in an English transla!on—is a five-volume work called Against Heresies. A'er he wrote it and it spread throughout the Church, Gnos!cism stopped being a serious challenge to the Chris!an faith. Irenaeus is considered the first systema!c Chris!an theologian. He died about the year 202 and was buried under the altar of what was then called the Church of Saint John in Lyons. It was later renamed Saint Irenaeus Church and was a shrine to him un!l 1562, when it was destroyed by Protestant Calvinists. Saint Irenaeus of Lyons, pray for us!
