PASTOR’S LETTER The Mysteries of the Rosary, Chapter 48: The Second Luminous Mystery—The Self-Manifesta!on of Jesus at the Wedding of Cana, con!nued…

“Every man serves the good wine first; and when men have drunk freely, then the poor wine; but you have kept the good wine un!l now.” (John 2:10)

The steward of the wedding feast said these words to the bridegroom because he assumed that the bridegroom was responsible for this good wine. We know that Jesus was the real provider of this miraculous wine, which a few moments before had been water. What might the Holy Spirit be telling us through this comment?

Keeping the good wine un!l now means that Jesus wants the best for us. Do we really believe that? Or do we think he’s holding out on us or doesn’t care about us? Some people get disappointed with Our Blessed Lord because he doesn’t do what they want when they want it. They may be forge#ng that God knows be$er than we do. We might be asking for something good, but it wouldn’t be good for us to have it, at least not at this !me. Or we may be forge#ng that the answer to our prayer—in the case of praying for others—depends not just on God but on the free will of the people who are being prayed for. Do we believe that God will answer our prayers just the way they should be answered?

Keeping the good wine un!l now means that God’s !ming is be#er than ours. We may have an idea of an “ideal life” and develop strategies to pursue it, along with a goal of when “it” should happen. But circumstances can blow all of our plans out of the water. Do we believe that whatever happens, God will s!ll have a good life for us?

Keeping the good wine un!l now means that the past is never be#er than the present. Sure, it may seem like life was easier or happier in another century, or when we were

younger, but we can’t live in the past. The present is all we have. In that present, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8) He has promised to be with us always, un!l the end of this age (and a%er that in heaven, for those who follow him there.) Do we believe that there is no be#er !me to be alive than right now?

Keeping the good wine un!l now means that everything God does is top-notch. Just look at the beauty of nature! No human ar!st can create anything as beau!ful, with as great a variety of colors, forms, sounds and smells. Leaves of many shades of green, yellow, orange, red and pink. The songs of loons, robins and warblers. The sound of children laughing and choirs singing. Forests and deserts, prairies and mountains, hills and valleys. And the most beau!ful of God’s crea!on—again, in splendid variety—human beings, made in his image. Do we believe that everything in crea!on is beau!ful?

Keeping the good wine un!l now means that God wants us to experience joy with him. In Sacred Scripture, wine is used a number of !mes in connec!on with joy and the life of God. For example, the psalmist refers to God providing human beings with plants to cul!vate, so that he may have, among other things, “wine to gladden the heart of man.” (Psalm 104:15) The prophet Joel men!ons wine poe!cally in connec!on with the !me of God’s victory over evil: “In that day the mountains shall drip sweet wine and the hills shall flow with milk.” (Joel 3:18) These images of wine in both the Old and New Testaments point to the Blood of Christ, the cup of salva!on, which washes away the sins of the world. In this life, the greatest joy and victory over evil are brought to earth through the Most Holy Eucharist. Do we believe that the best place on earth to find joy is at Mass?

Your fellow pilgrim through the Rosary, Father Rudolph

SAINT OF THE DAY - BLESSED CONTARDO FERRINI Contardo was born in Milan, Italy on April 4, 1859. As a child, he had a deep love of learning along with a strong religious devo!on. Beginning at the age of fourteen, he started going to Mass and receiving Holy Communion every day. As a teenager, he experienced some of the usual emo!onal challenges of adolescence, but was helped through them by a wise priest, Don Adalberto Catena. In 1876, Contardo won a scholarship to study law at the Borromeo College in Pavia. While there, he established a society for students that was kind of a combina!on of deba!ng society, social club and religious confraternity. He went on to do graduate work in Berlin and other European ci!es and became one of the leading experts on the history of Roman law, which he ended up teaching at the college in Pavia that he himself had a$ended. In the process, he came to know a number of languages well, including German, French, English, Spanish, Dutch, La!n, Greek, Hebrew and Syriac. But academics weren’t Contardo’s only interest. He also developed a love for poetry—especially nature poetry—and hiking in the Alps. In addi!on, he became ac!ve in Catholic social and poli!cal movements. In 1881, Contardo made a private life-long vow of celibacy. He used to tell his friends that his work was his wife and that he made it a “hymn of praise to the Lord of all learning.” His spiritual life was centered on devo!on to the Blessed Sacrament, prayer and medita!on. He joined the Third Order of Saint Francis (today called the “Secular Franciscan Order.”) Despite his academic bent, he did not believe that study was necessary to become holy. In his book, A Touch of the Infinite, Contardo wrote, “If any of our great men have known and felt God, ask yourself whether this came to them in the hard study of difficult problems, or not rather in the morning before the altar, or when they watched the last rays of the sun !n!ng the hills, or as the moon in its rising let its light fall on the Virgin Mother and a man knelt in sweet and pure prayer.” In 1895, Contardo was elected to the city council of Milan. He spoke out against the evils of socialism, strongly defended the Chris!an religion at a !me when it was under a$ack and spoke out for the indissolubility of marriage and in support of religious educa!on in the government-run elementary schools. Contardo died of typhoid fever on October 17, 1902, at the age of forty-three. Blessed Contardo Ferrini, pray for us!
