Lighting of the Advent Wreath: The Candle of Peace

Watch and wait for Christ’s coming!

Light candles of hope, peace, joy, and love,

remembering the promises of God with prayer.

We light this candle in hope. Light the first candle.

We light this candle for peace. Light the second candle.

Hear Zechariah’s song of hope for peace to the Christ child.

A reading from Luke 1:76-79:

“You, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people by the forgiveness of their sins. By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace."

Let us pray:

God of hope, Prince of Peace, You speak peace into the world in the Way of the Christ child. Help us embody your peace and live as peacemakers that we may called children of God.

God of hope, God of peace,

into our darkness come.

Gathering Song  O Come, O Come, EmmanuelELW 257

Verses 1, 5-8

1O come, O come, Emmanuel,

and ransom captive Israel,

that mourns in lonely exile here

until the Son of God appear.

Refrain

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel

shall come to you, O Israel.

5O come, O Key of David, come,

and open wide our heav'nly home;

make safe the way that leads on high,

and close the path to misery. Refrain

6O come, O Dayspring, come and cheer;

O Sun of justice, now draw near.

Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,

and death's dark shadow put to flight. Refrain

7O come, O King of nations, come,

O Cornerstone that binds in one:

refresh the hearts that long for you;

restore the broken, make us new. Refrain

8O come, O come, Emmanuel,

and ransom captive Israel,

that mourns in lonely exile here

until the Son of God appear. Refrain

Greeting

During this time, the presiding minister and the assembly greet each other.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,

and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

And also with you.

Kyrie

Prayer of the Day

Let us pray.

Stir up our hearts, Lord God, to prepare the way of your only Son. By his coming strengthen us to serve you with purified lives; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.

First Reading: Isaiah 40:1-11

1Comfort, O comfort my people,  says your God. 2Speak tenderly to Jerusalem,  and cry to her that she has served her term,  that her penalty is paid, that she has received from the Lord’s hand  double for all her sins. 3A voice cries out: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord,  make straight in the desert a highway for our God. 4Every valley shall be lifted up,  and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level,  and the rough places a plain. 5Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed,  and all people shall see it together,  for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” 6A voice says, “Cry out!”  And I said, “What shall I cry?” All people are grass,  their constancy is like the flower of the field. 7The grass withers, the flower fades,  when the breath of the Lord blows upon it;  surely the people are grass. 8The grass withers, the flower fades;  but the word of our God will stand forever. 9Get you up to a high mountain,  O Zion, herald of good tidings; lift up your voice with strength,  O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings,  lift it up, do not fear; say to the cities of Judah,  “Here is your God!” 10See, the Lord God comes with might,  and his arm rules for him; his reward is with him,  and his recompense before him. 11He will feed his flock like a shepherd;  he will gather the lambs in his arms, and carry them in his bosom,  and gently lead the mother sheep.

The word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Second Reading: 2 Peter 3:8-15a

8Do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day. 9The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance. 10But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed.  11Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness, 12waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire? 13But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home.

14Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish; 15aand regard the patience of our Lord as salvation.

The word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclamation

Gospel: Mark 1:1-8The holy gospel according to Mark 1st chapter

Glory to you, O Lord.

1The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.  2As it is written in the prophet Isaiah, “See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,  who will prepare your way; 3the voice of one crying out in the wilderness:  ‘Prepare the way of the Lord,  make his paths straight,’ ”4John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7He proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. 8I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

The gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, O Christ.

Offering

Anthem: A Cradle Carol Dan Forrest

Fiona Coughlin, soprano

Offering Prayer

God of abundance,

we bring before you the precious fruits of your creation, and with them our very lives. Teach us patience and hope as we care for all those in need until the coming of your Son, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Great Thanksgiving

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places

give thanks and praise to you,….And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Thanksgiving at the Table

Holy God, the Beginning and the End, our Salvation and our Hope, we praise you for creating a world of order and beauty.

When we brought on chaos, cruelty and despair, you sent the prophets to proclaim your justice and mercy. At this end of the ages your Son Jesus came to bring us your love and to heal all the suffering world.

In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Remembering, therefore, his life, death, and resurrection, we await his coming again in righteousness and peace.

Send your Spirit on us and on this bread and wine we share: strengthen our faith, increase our hope, and bring to birth the justice and joy of your Son.

Through him all glory and honor is yours, Almighty Father, with the Holy Spirit, in your holy Church, both now and forever. Amen

Lord’s Prayer

Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us.

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory,

forever and ever. Amen.

Sending Song  Fling Wide the Door ELW 259

The Creator of the stars bless your Advent waiting,

the long-expected Savior fill you with love,

the unexpected Spirit guide your journey,

☩ now and forever.

Amen.

Dismissal

Go in peace. Prepare the way of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Postlude: Praise Ye the Lord of Hosts from Christmas Oratorio Camille Saint-Saens

Arr. Diane Bish

Music Notes

Guest Musician: Lyric soprano Fiona Coughlin is a sophomore in Firestone High School’s Akron School for the Arts vocal program where she studies voice, music theory/history, and sings in Symphonic Choir, Women’s Chorus, and Madrigal Singers. She has studied voice with Susan Wallin and has appeared in countless Akron-area theater productions and concerts. Most recently, she was the featured soloist in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church’s (Akron) virtual Advent Procession concert. She is the vocal soprano soloist for Allenside Presbyterian Church in Akron, where she coordinates and leads the music program.

Offertory Anthem: Dan Forrest’s A Cradle Carol, an exquisite original work, ponders the miracle of God coming to earth in human form as a timid and innocent baby.  Looking beyond the Nativity to the plan of redemption, it takes the Christian from the crudity of the manger to the glorious song of the angles, and bids us to sing along.  "Though strangers see a babe in straw, Thy children see the Lord of all."  Elegant and deeply moving, Forrest’s musical painting masterfully captures the Christmas mystery and ultimate triumph as Christians prepare their hearts for the coming of Christ.
