Introduction

The Zulus are a proud tribe of people from Southern Africa.They have lived there for centuries. None of the Zulutribes have died out because they are big tribes. Everytribe has a chief. The Zulu also have a King of all thetribes. They have their own part of Africa. Some of theZulus live in modern cities today.

Zulu Clothing

Zulu women wear different kinds of stuff. If they aresingle they wear short grass skirts. Babies wear onlyone string of beads. Men wear the same thing

everyday. They wear animal skins. Nowadays the Zuluonly wear this clothing on special occasions.

Zulu Shelter

The Zulu lived in beehive shaped huts. In Zulu languagethe huts are called iqukwane. The huts are made fromyoung branches, straw and mud. The mud is used forthe oor, and the straw and the branches are for the roof.The Zulu would not move from place to place. Theywould only stay in their small villages.

Zulu Religion and Traditions

Zulu believe that there is a creature that lives in thewater. It is called Tokobshe and it is an elf. The elf ismade of dead people. Before the Zulu can cross a riverthey must throw stones in the river to scare away the elf.The Zulu also have a traditional reed dance. Threeyoung girls dance for the Zulu King. The King can thenchoose a wife from one of the girls. This tradition is onlydone once a year.

Zulu Art

The Zulu did bead art, clay pots and wood and stonecarving. They believe that art carries secret messages.They use colours to write letters. White usually meanspurity, red means love and black means anger orsadness.

Zulu Food

Zulu usually eat porridge,but sometimes they would addcorn or meat from their farm to this. They also have avery precious dish that they only share with their family.They use the sour milk and curdle it until the liquidseparates from the curdled milk. They make a hole atthe base of the container for the liquid to go though. Thisstep is repeated until the curdled milk is as thick as jelly.

What happened when the Zuluencountered Europeans?

When Europeans and Dutch settlers called Boers cameto Africa they rst wanted to buy some land from theZulu King. But when they arrived they were killed.Then when the news of the killings reached the otherBoers, the Boers sent a whole army to kill the Zulu.They had a big battle called the Battle of Blood river.The Boers defeated the Zulu army in 1838. The Zulu

would give the Dutch food in exchange for beads.
