TUES 6 AUG - SUN 1 SEPTCole Porter’s musical comedy has enchanted audiences for nearly 80 years and now comes to Kilworth House Theatre from August 6.

Winner of three Tony Awards in 2011 including Best Revival of a Musical, ‘Anything Goes’, is about the lovers, liars and pranksters on a transatlantic cruise.

Etiquette and convention head out the portholes as two unlikely pairs set off on the course to true love. Sailing from New York to England, the S.S. American carries a rather unusual group of passengers - American debutante Hope Harcourt accompanied by her fiancé wealthy Englishman Lord Evelyn Oakleigh and her mother Evangeline; nightclub

singer Reno Sweeney; Wall Street banker Elisha Witney and his stowaway assistant Billy Crocker and gangster Moonface Martin to name but a few! It turns out that Hope is Billy’s long-lost love and engaging the help of those on-board he pursues the girl of his dreams.

Peppering this hilariously bumpy journey to true love are some of musical theatre’s most memorable standards, including I Get a Kick out of You, It’s De-Lovely, You’re the Top, Friendship and of course, Anything Goes.

ANYTHING GOES is at Kilworth House Theatre from August 6 to Sept 1. Tickets available from the Box office 01858 881939 and online at www.kilworthhousetheatre.co.uk

FRI 06 SEP - SAT 28 SEPBased on an autobiographical novel, To Sir, With Love is an inspirational story of courage and hope. Ricky Braithwaite, a Cambridge graduate, arrives in London and soon learns what it is to be black in post-war Eng-land. As a teacher in a “failing” East End school, he must find a way into the hearts and minds of his unruly class to motivate and inspire the disillusioned and challenging teenagers. Teacher and pupils embark on a difficult journey as Ricky learns humil-ity and understanding and his pupils learn to trust, respect and love this highly unusual man.

Made into a major film in 1967, this new stage adapta-tion of the book is by Ayub Khan Din, author of the ac-

SATURDAY 31 AUGUSTIn 2007, Andi turned her hand (well her brain and her mouth) to stand up comedy winning a raft of awards, appearing on top stand up comedy shows, many of which involved having the name of the show in very bright lights behind her head. This did not distract her from the job at hand though and she turned in memorable performances on Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, Stand Up For The Week and Live At The Apollo (which not only included bright lights, but dry ice too).

SATURDAY 24 AUGUSTAs a fifteen-year-old Liver-pudlian schoolboy, Simon Bligh was told by his head-master that he would go to hell. His mum wanted him to be a priest; he wanted to be a plumber. His dad was a mad Catholic Communist; he was a Kung Fu mad Bud-dhist. Growing up in Toxteth, his childhood was odd, but full of strange passions. Philoso-phy and Zen, leather trousers and motorbikes. Japan, un-armed combat and stand up comedy. The young Simon loved comedy and, upon see-ing a Richard Pryor film in an empty Manchester cinema, he realised his true calling. He knew he should be a comedi-

SUNDAY 25 AUGUSTRunner-up in the Best New Show category at Dave’s Leicester Comedy Festival, Anthony’s devilishly droll, deadpan and frequently dark humour, masterful timing and delivery of a stream of one-liners combine to make him one of the most polished performers on the circuit. With TV appearances including ‘Granada’s Mad For It’, ‘Meridian’s House Of Fun’ and ‘UK Gold’s Live’ at Jongleurs. His act is a combination comedy, music and song, based on his own true-life experiences mixed in with a whole bunch of lies.

Live_Transmission: ‘Joy Division Reworked’ is an electro-or-chestral and visual reinterpre-tation of one of the UK’s most influential bands, Joy Division. A first of its kind; the produc-tion tours the UK this Autumn beginning at the Royal Festival Hall, London.

The show is a unique audio-visual collaboration between electronic music pioneer Scan-ner, Heritage Orchestra, and visual artist Matt Watkins.

LIVE_TRANSMISSION ‘Joy Division Reworked’

This sonic and visual spec-tacle turns the tables on the conventional concert experi-ence. Rather than classical in-terpretations or cover versions, Live_Transmission is a fearless dismantling of Joy Division’s visual and musical motifs, cre-ating a hugely powerful immer-sive event that pays homage to the signature spirit that defined the group as one of the world’s most progressive bands.

The entire show pivots

around the virtuosic ferocity of drummer Adam Betts, guitar-ist Matt Calvert (both of instru-mental noise-rock band Three Trapped Tigers) and bassist John Calvert (Ghostpoet).

This unhinged nucleus is kept in check only by conductor Jules Buckley who battles with equal force using the incompa-rable strings, brass, voices, and percussion of the Heritage Or-chestra in conjunction with the unique sounds of Scanner.

The musicians are also sandwiched between two huge screens that capture the projected artwork of Matt Watkins, whose vast visuals complement the orchestra by switching between clarity and chaos.

Tell us, how did the project come about and why?

The orchestra has a history of unu-sual collaborations and inventive re-inter-pretive work, from projects with Aphex Twin, Antony, Bryce Dessner, Amon Tobin, UNKLE and DJ Yoda, and so Laura Ducce-schi (Creative Producer, Brighton Festival) approached us, the Heritage Orchestra, to create a new work based on the music of Joy Division.

How did you come up with the idea and concept?

From the initial idea of a Joy Division inspired show, the process was truly un-predictable and certainly wasn’t conceived in one sitting, but was more like Chinese whispers, where the idea grew and grew into something that nobody could have im-agined. First of all, Musical Director Scanner, deconstructed the classic Joy Division tunes into new electronic demos, these were then brought to life in the studio and developed by Matt Calvert (guitar) and Adam Betts (drums) - both members of instrumental noise-rock band Three Trapped Tigers, and

With the UK tour of Live_Transmission: ‘Joy Division Reworked’ coming to our region this September, WOW gets an exclusive opportunity to talk to Chris Wheeler, Creative Director of the Heritage Orchestra.

John Calvert (bass). After the music was well and truly dismantled, or-chestrator Tom Trapp transcribed these live sessions, creating a score with this core band, strings, two female voices, brass and percussion. We didn’t know what it would really sound like until the first ever gig, but thanks to Jules Buckley our es-teemed conductor, the whole show came together rather well. I can’t speak for how the visuals were conceived - suffice to say that Matt captured the essence of Joy Divi-sion and somehow manages to project it onto multiple screens that surround the or-chestra - it’s incredibly powerful to look at. The whole combination is most certainly progressive rather than nostalgic.

What does it mean to be touring the UK with this project?

There are really no

projects like this that get to tour in the UK.

It’s experimental yet accessible, it has the punk ethic and includes a young amplified orchestra, and there’s a massive visual installation. Venues are quite risk averse at the moment but there is still an appetite for the alternative and progres-sive, and the venues who have booked this show have the foresight to present exciting new-works. But it’s only because of the Arts Council that this tour could even be achieved, so they must see some impor-tance in this kind of production getting a wider audience.

Why Joy Division? What makes them so special and exciting to ‘rework’?

Why not?! It’s an unlikely marriage

really, and fraught with danger - messing with a cult bands music and slamming it with an electronic musician and orchestra... it should never work! But the problem is that everyone has a perceived notion that orchestras working with a band is just that, an orchestra with a band. We are not doing straight covers of Joy Division, we are re-interpreting and re-imagining some great music in way that respects it whilst taking it somewhere else.

Is this the first time you have worked with visual artists as well as musicians? What do you think it brings to the project?

We’ve worked with several visual art-ists and tend always to have a strong visual element to our performances - which is not the norm for an orchestra at all. But then we don’t play any classical repertoire and will more likely be found recording a session with The XX or performing with Aphex Twin at the Barbican than playing Beethoven or

Brahms. Other or-chestras can do that.

Done properly visuals transform a performance, we

had great success with our cover version

of the Blade Runner soundtrack at the Syd-

ney Opera House recently - this didn’t show the film but

included suggestive and remi-niscent imagery that was simply

mind blowing. For this Joy Division show Matt Watkins visuals provide the icing on the cake, without it we would lose a visual con-nection, and the visuals definitely help im-merse the audience in a super -scope world of Joy Division.

Why should people come and see the show? Any highlights they should ex-pect or anything in particular to look out for?

I should probably tell them what not to expect! It’s not a covers concert - the mu-sic has been transformed and reworked into an aggressive, very loud, electro-or-chestral odyssey, with massive Joy Division inspired visuals of course. However, there’s plenty of recognizable material for fans to raise a cheeky eyebrow to, it just won’t be what they expect.

What made you consider collaborat-ing with the artists involved in particular? Why? Had you worked with any of them before?

Laura Ducceschi at Brighton Festival suggested both Matt and Scanner as col-laborators, and after properly checking them out we thought, yeah they’re pretty cool. I was keen to have an electronic artist as our sounding board and main musical cohort. For us, working with people from different artistic backgrounds is crucial to an exciting and effective collaboration.

This is the Heritage Orchestra’s 10 year anniversary this year isn’t it? How have things changed since you began? What is next?

Well, we started playing in a small club called Cargo in East London ten years ago, with about 40 of us packed on stage, and

since then we’ve supported major artists on arena tours, produced our own new shows, recorded with all sorts of people, and rocked two different shows at the Sydney Opera House in one week. The only thing that’s changed with us is that we’ve got better at what we do, and strongly believe in pushing the orchestral format into new territory. It’s just annoying that a lot of managers and art-ists don’t realize how good their orchestral shows ‘could’ be if they took us on, with our approach to orchestral sound reinforce-ment, orchestration, and general ability to merge with any artist at a world class level.

Any other bands you would like to ‘rework’ similarly?

If Beck hadn’t done that really cool thing with Dav-id Bowie recently, I’d say Mr B o w i e . And also Port ishead , but they’ve been down the orchestra road be-fore. It would also be good to mess around with other bands like The Horrors, The Irrepresibles, or an electronic artist like Burial or Caribou, or something ri-diculous like Red Hot Chili Peppers, even if it was only Flea, the bassist!

What is next for the project? It was premiered at Brighton Festival, has been to Sydney and is about to tour the UK, any plans for other performances?

No more plans yet! Keep your eyes peeled though! Right now we are just looking forward to sharing this project with all of our UK audiences on this upcoming tour.

The Museum of London celebrates the arrival of a new royal with a small display that draws on its collection. Baby memorabilia worn by former royal babies include a delicately embroidered skullcap worn by an infant Charles I, and a tiny linen vest embroidered with a crown and a small lace mitten belonging to George III, tracking more than 400 years of UK cultural, design and and fashion history in babywares.

ART AND CULTURE NEAR YOU...

UNTIL SUNDAY 29 SEPTA new exhibition focusing on one of the most influential subcultures to emerge since the Second World War is on display at Northampton Mu-seum & Art Gallery.

‘Mods’ explores the stories of the original 1960s mods, the mod revival in the late 70s and the re-emergence in the last 10 years. It will display the key elements of the subcul-

ture, including music, fashion and style, and even their pre-ferred mode of transport, the iconic scooter.

The exhibition, which is cu-rated by Paul Lander and free-lance archivist, Tory Turk will feature five scooters, photo-graphs by Jamie Garbutt from his “Mods and Sods” portfolio, costumes donated by lead gui-tarist and singer from leading revival band, Secret Affair and

local stories from Northamp-ton people who have recorded their memories on film and loaned, clothing, artefacts and photographs.

In addition to the exhibi-tion, a lively programme of events has also been organ-ised, including a mod disco featuring local DJs, live music by tribute band Mod Revue and a special viewing of the exhibition for local scooter enthusiasts. There will be a screening of Quadrophenia at the Errol Flynn Filmhouse, adjacent to Royal & Derngate and Secret Affair will play live in the Guildhall on 13 Septem-ber as part of their 2013 na-tional tour.

One of our favourite water-ing holes can be found in deep-est Hallaton... we found ample parking at this delightful coun-try pub overlooking the pictur-esque village pond. The Fox Inn has a large well tended beer

garden offering lodgings to large number of ducks who appeared to be sunning themselves on the lawn when we arrived. The menu was tantalisingly varied with something for everyone at reasonable prices. We shared a combo from the bar snacks menu which got the thumbs up from everyone. We’re sure to be coming back soon.

Something else worth a punt is a trip along the Grand Union Canal. If you head down to North

Kilworth Wharf, you and up to 9 friends can hire a self steer day-boat from as little as £120 and spend the whole day messing about on the canal. The Leicester section of the Grand Union Ca-nal has 20 miles of open water for you to take a relaxing cruise along. Open seven days a week during the summer, you can stock up your groceries and liquid refreshments at the shop before you cast off. Right chaps, who’s turn is it to be captain...?

The Red Lion, Great Bowden

t’s no coincidence that all-new Red Lion in Great Bow-den, just outside Market

Harborough, has scooped Pub of the Month plaudits for August. As soon as the summer descended in spectacular fashion, it became impossible not to notice the in-creased traffic in High Street, the bold new look to the exterior of the Red Lion, and the huge upturn in business at the previ-ously quiet pub. Clearly, some-

thing was afoot, worth further investigation...

As soon as you walk in the door of the all-new bar and restaurant, the hard work that’s been put into the transformation of the place, the expertise of Kieran and

his team and their warm welcome are all immediately apparent. With its magnificent new beechwood bar and fittings and a luxurious refit and rethink throughout, could this be the per-fect cross between a dynamic, sophisticated bar and a friendly, traditional village hostelry?

Yes, it could. And what’s more, there’s a beautiful garden space that’s ideal for these summer evenings, coupled with classy all-weather decking that was buzz-ing with clientele on the warm

FANCY TRYING SOMEWHERE NEW TO DRINK? LET WOW HELP YOU DECIDE!

Friday night we dropped by to put the place to the test.

With the ambience, beer and wine list in the bar duly rated as hits, we were initially tempted by the sandwich menu and the sight of some spectacular sub-six-quid gourmet delights (home-made cod fish fingers with home-made tartare sauce and cole slaw: sold) being served up to our next-table neighbours. And so we were tempted to test the menu put together by Kieran with chef James Ray (headhunted from the award winning Hunters res-taurant in Bath).

Having lived and worked in Thailand, James adds a mouth-watering fusion twist to several speciality dishes, including the fragrant chicken broth starter, with coriander, lime, pickled gin-

ger and crispy noodles (£7.50). An insistence on fresh, seasonal, local ingredients is immediately apparent in the menu. Likewise in the sensational flavours of both my companion’s mini-toad-in-the-hole fashioned from a trio of locally sourced sausages, with mustard mash and cassoulet (£13.95) – and my trio of burgers, a veritable global trek in a swirl of marinades, mooli and salsa, with onion rings and rosemary chips on the side (£12.95). We’ll definitely be back for pud.

WOW TAKES A LOOK AT THE LATEST DEALS ON WHEELS

MINI Convertible and MINI Roadster

Soft top season is here and with both the MINI Convertible and the MINI Roadster to choose from, it’s a tough decision - but the search for wind-in-your-hair driving fun ends here. Both models combine the irresistible charm of the pre-mium British brand and thrilling go-kart feeling with made-to-measure open-top enjoyment.

The classic Mini didn’t officially get its first open top until it was 34 years old. The convertible version of the revolutionary car joined the model range exactly 20 years ago, with a limited run of just 1,000. In 2004 open top

enthusiasts welcomed arrival of the MINI Convertible with its hallmark proportions and design features, and an electro-hydrau-lically powered roof mechanism. The MINI Convertible swiftly established itself as a market leader and retains pole postion in its segment. Hot on its wheels is the sixth unique model in the MINI line-up, the Roadster.

With the Roadster MINI con-tinues to rewrite the rulebook; this is the first open-topped two-seater in the company’s history. The cutting-edge design is typi-cally MINI – an authentic re-in-

terpretation of a classic motoring concept. This latest model offers the fun of driving a taut-handling roadster, with all the character of MINI. And being built at Plant Oxford means it can justifiably claim to be a spiritual successor to the traditional British road-sters of old.

Which of the two sun-seek-ers offers the more appealing open-top driving experience is entirely a matter for the individ-ual to decide. The driver of a MINI Convertible can share the joys of summer travel with up to three passengers while in the MINI

Roadster, the suntan and wind-swept hair are strictly for two. In terms of speedy access to the open fresh air the MINI Convert-ible can be partially opened - up to 40 centimetres - at the press of a button and fully opened in just 15 seconds. Only the MINI Roadster has the faster alterna-tive here, activated manually. The soft top is unfolded and locked into place behind the seats in a single operation. There is also an optional semi-automatic open and close mechanism which simply requires the roof to be re-leased and secured at the wind-

screen frame. There are no compromises

in either model when it comes to safety. Two rollover bars made of polished stainless steel behind the seats along with an extreme-ly rigid windscreen frame form a stable passenger cell in the MINI Roadster. Accident protection is based on the same principle in the MINI Convertible, too, though here the single-section rollover bar springs up automatically behind the headrests at the rear from idle position.

This also enables the use of a large through-load opening

between the luggage and pas-senger section, giving the MINI Convertible additional versatil-ity. With all seats in use, it has a storage volume of 125 litres with the top open and 170 litres when it is closed. Here the MINI Roadster wins hands-down with a transport capacity of 240 li-tres - impressively generous for this category of vehicle. However, things are a little different when the split rear seatback in the MINI Convertible is folded down. This increases its maximum load vol-

ume to 660 litres. In both models, a light soft top

and additional body reinforce-ments ensure a high degree of torsional stiffness and a low centre of gravity, making for in-creased agility when cornering at speed. The MINI Roadster is a tad more radical when it comes to combating the airstream. Its A-columns have a greater tilt angle, and from a speed of 80 km/h the active rear spoiler au-tomatically extends to optimise aerodynamic balance.

Meanwhile the 4-seater has more variety to offer in terms of its engine portfolio. The spec-trum ranges from the MINI One Convertible with 72 kW/98 bhp to the MINI Cooper D Convert-ible with 82 kW/112 bhp, the MINI Cooper Convertible with 90 kW/122 bhp and the MINI Cooper SD Convertible with 105 kW/143 bhp through to the MINI Cooper S Convertible with 135 kW/184 bhp. All MINI Roadster versions bear the name of the legendary

sports car designer John Cooper in their model designation. Here the program comprises the MINI Cooper Roadster, the MINI Cooper D Roadster, the MINI Cooper SD Roadster and the MINI Cooper S Roadster. All engines are combined as standard with a six-speed manual transmis-sion, with a six-speed automatic transmission available as an op-tional extra.

What is more, both body types also come in an extremely sporty version. In both the MINI John Cooper Works Convertible and the MINI John Cooper Works Roadster a 155 kW/211 bhp turbo engine will help whip up a storm of enthusiasm on any open-top trip. !

It may come as some surprise to the uninitiated – which is to say those unused to travelling on two wheels on track at 120mph – to discover that one of the UK’s two dedicated Ducati service and performance centres is based in Stoke Albany, near Market Harborough.

Ducati motorcycles are synonymous with prestige, performance and Italian flair for design and innovation – and they’ve been GTEC Performance proprietor Jeff Green’s passion for the past 30 years, first working for an importer of the Italian bikes, then for the company itself as sales manager and after-sales tech support.

Now that’s what we call performance!

“I’ve run Ducati training courses and supported dealer technicians with updates, bulletins and answers to every conceivable enquiry,” says Jeff. “I’ve looked after the Ducati press and demonstrator fleet, and race bikes from club to WSB level.”

In all, Jeff has a unique insight into Ducati – and a level of service, performance and race preparation that is of the highest standard, all at a sensible cost.
