WOW TAKES A LOOK AT SOME OF THE LATEST THEATRICAL HIGHLIGHTS

FRI 14 AND SAT 15 JANUARYAward-winning actress Patricia Routledge and international concert pianist Piers Lane take to the Royal stage on Friday 14 and Saturday 15 January to tell the extraordinary story of Myra Hess and her famous wartime concerts in the delightful Admission: One Shilling.

In this extraordinary musical and theatrical collaboration, Patricia Routledge and Piers Lane celebrate the life of Dame Myra Hess – a remarkable woman who initiated, directed and performed a number of legendary concerts at

Admission: One Shilling

the National Gallery during the Second World War. Her concerts provided a cultural oasis for thousands who remained in London during the war years.

In Dame Myra’s own words (compiled from letters, books and interviews by her great-nephew, composer Nigel Hess), interspersed with piano music by Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Schumann and Chopin, audiences hear how the ‘great adventure’ of these 1600 lunchtime concerts began, and how it continued while bombs rained down on London.

ADMISSION: ONE SHILLINGis at the Royal and Derngate, Guildhall Road, Northampton, NN1 1DP on Fri 14 and Sat 15 January. For tickets call the box office on 01604 624811 or go online at www.royalandderngate.co.uk

Perhaps best known for her role as Hyacinth Bucket in TV sitcom Keeping Up Appearnances, Patricia

Routledge has an undeniable chemistry with pianist Piers Lane, developed over many years of friendship, making their performance a true delight. This uplifting story about the healing power of music is directed by Christopher Luscombe.

MON 31 JAN TO TUES 1 FEBPrivate Peaceful relives the life of Private Tommo Peaceful, a young First World War soldier awaiting the firing squad at dawn. During the night he looks back at his short but joyful past growing up in rural Devon: his exciting first days at school; the accident in the forest that killed his father; his adventures with Molly, the love of his life; and the battles and injustices of war that brought him to the front line.

Based on the award-winning

Private Peaceful

novel by Michael Morpurgo, this fantastic production is adapted & directed by Simon Reade.

Winner of the Blue Peter

Book of the Year, Private Peaceful is by third Children’s Laureate, Michael Morpurgo. His inspiration came from a visit to Ypres where he was shocked to discover how many young soldiers were court-martialled and shot for cowardice during the First World War.

This production has received an abundance of critical acclaim, with The Scotsman stating “The horrors of war and the joyfulness of life are bound up together in this magnificent

WED 2 TO SUN 6 FEBRUARYA spectacular adaptation of JM Barrie’s magical story of the boy who never grew up comes to Royal & Derngate this spring, when the world-renowned Russian Ice Stars perform Peter Pan on Ice, from Wednesday 2 to Sun 6 February.

Mysterious lands filled with pirates, Indians and ticking crocodiles will transport audiences back in time to a wonderful world of make-believe as Wild Rose Ice Theatre brings to life the book which has inspired generation after generation.

Unique touches, such as penny farthings being ridden across the ice as the curtain opens on the skyline of a

London park, complete with chimney stacks and chimney sweeps, pave the way for a fast-moving production which promises to be both lavish and spectacular.

A fantastic cast of Russian skaters, many of whom are former competitors at National, European and World Championship level, are stunningly choreographed by Caverliere Giuseppe Arena, who was responsible for the choreography at the Opening Ceremony of Turin’s 2006 Winter Olympics.

The well-known characters of Peter Pan, Wendy, Tinkerbell and Captain Hook will spring to life against some stunning scenery, when the Derngate stage is

miraculously transformed into an ice rink from Wednesday 2 to Sunday 6 February, for a show that will thrill the whole family.

WEDNESDAY 5 JANUARYOddsock’s riotous, but family-friendly production of Hamlet – the Comedy finds the young student prince returning home for Christmas to discover there’s something rotten in the state of Denmark and it ’s not just his dirty washing! Mum’s married Uncle Claudius and his dead Dad only puts in a ghost appearance – it ’s enough to make a teenager mad. Things will never be the same again in the Hamlet household but as this is Oddsocks it will all be sorted out in raunchy, rebellious and rumbustious fashion!

Hamlet The comedy...

Just like their sell-out Romeo & Juliet, be prepared for Shakespeare with belly laughs, singing, dancing and some rocking music by Rob Harris, lead guitarist with Jamiroquai!

And now magician and entertainer Paul Daniels, who has a reputation for taking on challenges, not least in his recent appearance in Strictly Come Dancing, will be adding another change of direction to his illustrious career, by taking on a dramatic Shakespearean role: Paul will be appearing, via hologram, as the ghost of Hamlet’s father!

‘One of the best bits about my job is designing and working on special effects for theatre. When Oddsocks came up with this idea I jumped at the chance of not only being in Shakespeare (a first for me), but also being a special effect myself. Iam really looking forward to being spooky.’

HAMLET THE cOMEDY Is at The Castle Theatre, Castle Way, Wellingborough, NN8 1XA on Wed 5 January. For tickets call the box office on 01933 270 007 or online at www.thecastle.org.uk.

FRI 4 TO SAT 26 FEBRoyal & Derngate opens its 2011 Made in Northampton season with a play by the well-loved novelist Daphne du Maurier. The Years Between takes to the Royal stage from Friday 4 to Saturday 26 February, and is the first of a whole season of works written or inspired by classic British writers.

Set in the 1940s it follows the fortunes of MP’s wife Diana Wentworth, and her young son, after her husband is lost in action in World War II. As a single woman, Diana finds unexpected independence; she assumes her husband’s

seat in parliament and begins a relationship with a local farmer. As the war draws to an end and peace returns to the country, a shock revelation threatens Diana’s new existence to the core.

A u t o b i o g r a p h i c a l l y -inspired, The Years Between is one of only two original plays written by Daphne du Maurier, better known as a novelist and particularly as the author of Rebecca and Jamaica Inn. An intriguing family drama, this powerful production directed by Kate Saxon (ETT’s Far From The Madding Crowd) breathes new life into this rarely-performed gem.”

Russell: a new comedy brand

Russell Kane’s new show is the finest of his career,” reckons Time Out magazine. “Extremely funny, poignant and fuelled by real intelligence and passion.”

Smokescreens & Castles is the show in question, deserved winner of the Fosters Edinburgh Comedy Award in 2010 on the occasion of his third successive nomination. It revolves around tales of Kane’s childhood home, the only council house in his street which had been privately bought – by his dad. When Dave Kane built an extension, the home was mockingly christened ‘The Castle’ by

incensed Enfield neighbours. During the show Kane reverts to his younger self in a revealing and hilarious exploration of his old house, his family and class relationships.

If the idea of being lectured to on Darwin, Aristotle or Pankhurst by a recently retired member of the SWP sounds less than hilarious, rest assured Mark Steel’s CV stretching back through Radio 4, BBC 2 and various best-selling books comes with an assurance of a certain lightness of touch.

Shot across the bows

It’s tricky doing a preview for a preview show when the bills and final details of who’s appearing in the actual Leicester Comedy Festival haven’t been sorted… and so, by definition, neither has the bill for this lipsmacking titillating peepshow hinting at the glories of what’s to come.

But hold on. Leicester is now the biggest and longest-running comedy festival anywhere in the universe, and there will be hundreds of tittersome big guns shooting from the hip (as well as millions of squeaky comedy water pistols) when the circus rolls into town from 4 to 20 February. And the best of the

fest will be at the preview. All this at the de Mont, and

a Welsh bloke who punched a shop-assistant over the duvet tog-rating system and went berserk over a mince pie, too.

Burn baby burn

Best described as indie pop meets carnival rock, the Burns Unit are an eight-piece Scottish-Canadian supergroup featuring award-winning folk singer Karine Polwart, alt-folk stalwart King Creosote, rapper MC Soom T and a cast of (seemingly) thousands. It ’s a rich reservoir of talent, and we recommend the exhilarating Side Show album which incorporates elements of cabaret, dub, synth-pop, folk and underground rock. We’re talking retro synths, accordion, shruti box and tamboura alongside guitars, piano, drums and bass…

Larry Miller, meanwhile, plays guitar. Bigly. ‘The

Guildford Cowboy’ is an exploding ball of heavy blues energy rocks. And if you dig Gallagher, Bonamassa, Moore, Hendrix or The Hamsters, you’ll love Larry.

Singles going steady

“So I look up to the sky / And I wonder what it’ll be like in days gone by / As I sit and bathe in the wave of nostalgia for an age yet to come…”

Was it really four years since we saw the Buzzcocks at Leicester University, reeling out reflective classics such as Nostalgia, 16 Again and Whatever Happened To? – the kind of heartfelt powerpop that always set the Mancs apart from the less elevated themes of common-or-garden punk.

Universally lovelorn, always as aware of horizons as endless possibilities, Buzzcocks music was cunningly built to last – so it really shouldn’t come as any surprise that the emotional hooks still tug and

lift as effectively as the three-note solos. Thirty-four years on, Diggle and Shelley’s old (and not so old) one-twos remain

Born in Rochdale to a Czech scientist and a German nurse, Barb Jungr was an underground cabaret star of the ‘70s, blossoming late in New York and Edinburgh over the past 15 years to become recognised as one of Britain’s great song stylists.

Nowadays she’s a giant of jazzy lounge – a chansonnier, if you will , or an interpreter of the classic, lyric-driven songs of French cabaret and Deep Southern Blues. Barb rethinks not only Brel, Piaf and Porter, but will also intimately strip bare the likes of Dylan, the Kinks, Elvis… always revealing new depths of meaning in their familiar classics.

Unknown pleasures

Lordie, it’s Roxy Music’s first UK tour in 10 years! Original members Bryan Ferry, Andy Mackay, Phil Manzanera and Paul Thompson will be to the forefront, as on the band’s first reunion tour in 2001. But once again, ambient megastar and genial sourpuss Brian Eno will somehow resist the temptation to get back into bed with Bryan and the boys.

As if to wind Eno up, the tour is named for their first LP of 1973, on which his angular,

Have you heard about Northampton’s fantastic new climbing centre?

12 WOW January 2011

t’s a hot new option for children’s parties, for corporate team-building outings and for families fed up with

spending these chilly weekends indoors. It’s a great day out for hard-core experts and beginners alike, with a sky-high thrill factor, state-of-art facilities and a friendly welcome. So how come you haven’t heard all about the Pinnacle Climbing Centre in Northampton?

Having thrown open its doors during the summer after a painstaking five-month build, it’s time to take full advantage of the hi-rise activities on offer in a towering purpose-built unit in Far Cotton. Right from the off, you can’t fail to be impressed by the

vertiginous, multicoloured climbing walls in the main rope room at the Pinnacle.

“They’re like climbing walls,” says our guinea-pig junior mountaineer, Jimmy, aged 10. “Except three times higher!”

Soon kitted out in special climbing shoes and safety helmets, our family group meets instructor Andy, who soon puts us at ease with his obvious expertise and friendly manner with the kids. Andy explains all about the “vertical arena of risk”, showing us how to put on our harnesses, how to tie in and even how to belay (act as a safe counterbalance, using ropes, carabiners and a belay plate!) one another up to the distant ceiling – and safely back down, too!

Before long, the kids are scurrying up walls, slabs and overhangs, all under Andy’s careful tutelage. The hand-holds all over the walls are set out in colour-coded routes for the experts (ranging from easy 1s to impossible 8s and 9s), and by the time we drop in to see the ‘rock stars’ making like Spiderman up the bouldering room overhangs, we’re all feeling like we could take on the 3s – but by now it’s time for coffee and homemade cake in the wonderfully equipped climbing shop.

The WOW verdict: great fun, perfect for wet weekends – “When can we go back?”

WOW’s favourite bit of winter is the need for hats. There are myriad to choose from and, like shoes, it doesn’t matter how much you ate over Christmas, they will still fit.

ats can be used to lift any outfit – try adding Internacionale’s pretty corsage-adorned trilby

or Littlewoods’s herringbone hat to an ordinary trouser suit, and suddenly you have a slightly cheeky, look-at-me outfit. We particularly love the retro cloche hat from ASOS.com, while Jane Norman’s faux fur hat is designed for women who like to sweep into places safe in the knowledge that everyone’s eyes are on them.

The love for knits is showing no sign of abating, as is evident in the hatwear department. There are girly ones, like A|Wear’s pale pink beanie complete with bow, Marks and Spencer’s soft grey hat and Republic’s light blue cable knit hat. Mint Velvet has a traditional cream beanie, while those looking for a bit more inyour-face colour should get themselves to River Island.

For those who prefer the more rugged approach, with a fashionable twist naturally, should shuffle along to Matalan for a tartan trapper’s hat or splash out on a sheepskin hat from Ruby & Ed at Shudoo.

MAKE SURE YOU’RE BEAUTY, NOT THE BEAST...

With another year past, and winter into full swing and trying not suffer with the Post Christmas/January Blues. Here is my Winter Survival Guide for Your Skin.

1. Always use plenty of moisturiser throughout the winter months, as our skin suffers greatly from central heating, lighting and the weather.

2. Your night cream is essential as that will repair your skin whilst you sleep,

Beauty ManOr is above Browns Hairdressing, Manor House, High Street, Market Harborough, LE16 7NL. To book an appointment telephone 0844 999 4365www.thebeautymanor.co.uk

If you have any beauty questions you would like to ask our expert, please write to: Kara @ Beauty Manor, C/O WOW, 50 St. Mary’s Road, Market Harborough, LE16 7DU.

Happy new year everyone

your skin will function better when your relaxed so your night cream has a lot of work to compensate for damage caused by the day time.

3. Hands always get forgotten until their so sore and causes you discomfort. Try to keep your Hand Cream & Nail Oil by your bed so it reminds you to use before you go to sleep, that way the cream or oil can absorb the skin properly.

4. Wear gloves all the time when your outside, even if it is

just popping to the shops, by keeping your hands warm will prevent the joints from aching with the cold, and keeps them hydrated!

5. Lips are more prone to chap and split in the winter, keep your lip balm in your handbag or pocket so then it is easy to apply when it is at hand.

6. Your Five a day of Fruit and Vegetable are more vital now, especially with all the bugs going around. By trying to eat five portions of fruit and vegetables on a daily basis, you just ensure you are getting all the vitamins and nutrients your body needs to fight.

7. Drinking plenty of water is a big YES for the winter, I know its nicer to switch the kettle on

and make a cup of tea but a class of water before or after would be gratefully appreciated by your body and skin. Remember your daily water intake has a big impact on the hydration of your skin.

8. Lastly remember to Smile, it might be Winter but we are one step close to Summer!

Hope this helps through the next few months.

WOW ‘s Tracy and Elaine decide to look clearly into the New Year!

f reading your Christmas cards proved to be a little difficult, maybe it’s time to

book yourself an eye test just like we did!

With glasses counting as a fashionable accessory we can’t think of a better way to spend our chilly morning other than trying on one pair of gorgeous specs after another! Although firstly, we need the eye test!

Armed with donuts we arrived at Vision Express, Market Harborough and receive a complimentary coffee courtesy of Luana, Jade and boss Elan. The donuts weren’t essential but what a great way to start the new year diets!!

Jade tested us first on a machine that puffs air into your eyes, (for you technical buffs its called a non-contact tonometer!). Making us jump with each puff, Jade promised us this wasn’t for her own entertainment but did genuinely test the pressure of our eyes. This of course is important whether you need glasses or not as it can detect many problems and the earlier something is detected the better!

Elan showed us into the ‘testing room’. We took it in turns to sit on the big black ‘mastermind’ chair, lights turned down and then tested

WOW_28_pp20_21_Ladies that do.in20 20 23/12/10 22:36:20

WOW January 2011 21

Elan told us that the majority of glasses are made in the lab upstairs, we were lucky enough to have a look around - very scientific and efficient.

Look out for the Vision Express offer of recycling old glasses (by passing them on to third world countries). Very worthwhile.

Tag branded frames are now available from Vision Express. They also have exclusivity on Oakley, and sell many other known brands.

We found the staff here exceptional. The experience was completely fascinating with the added bonus is we can both see clearly now with our stylish and most valuable accessory!

Happy New Year x.

on various images on the board. He also took a look behind our eyes, again checking for any underlying problems.

For a £10 additional cost, at Vision Express they can take a picture of inside your eyes. The picture is a detailed image of your retina - the back of your eye - allowing you to see what they see; as well as keeping a permanent photographic reference of your eye health so it can be reviewed on future visits. It looked very much to us like a planet - Mars maybe!

Given a clean bill of health, a correct prescription, we are ready to shop! Luana and Jade helped us pick the most suitable and flattering frames. It was great fun to try on a few that perhaps weren’t so flattering too - including the swimming and ski-ing goggles. Fantastic that poor eyesight is no excuse not to enjoy many sports although, Elaine, being very short sighted had thought that was one of the bonuses!

WOW LOOKS AT WHAT’S GOING ON...

THURSDAY 20 JANUARYFrom 7 to 9pm the show will include a presentation and exhibitions from some of the leading and well known top cruise lines.

Organised by Tracey Holt, the local independent cruise expert from ‘GoCruise’, this show is designed to be a one stop shop to meet all your cruising needs. From those who are considering their very first cruise adventure, to those who are cruise ‘addicts’ there will be something for everyone

GoCruise

and with Tracey on hand to offer independent, impartial advice.

Whilst cruising is in fact now the fastest growing sector in the travel industry, with over 1.5 million people who chose to cruise in 2009. However, lots of people still have a pre-conceived view of cruising, the idea of the show is so people can see for themselves what a cruise involves, and have their questions answered by the experts.

Listed are some of the

major cruise lines who will be exhibiting including: Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Azamara, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines, Voyages of Discovery, Cunard, Princess and P&O. As well as more niche cruise lines including AMAWATERWAYS, Star Clippers and Hurtigruten (The Northern lights Specialists recently seen on the BBC with Joanna Lumley). Visitors will have the opportunity to find out about a range of ships, destinations and facilities on board so they can find the

cruise that is right for them.Tracey understands that

choosing a cruise for the first time can be a daunting experience. This is why Tracey is on hand to help guide you through the process and as ‘Go Cruise’ is fully ABTA and ATOL bonded, you know your booking is in safe hands.

WOW HAS A LOOK AT REGIONAL BUSINESS EVENTS

What goes round, comes around...

Depending on which bestseller you’ve read most recently, you might be convinced that the best way to build your business is to write a catchy marketing slogan, to gather client feedback from your interactive website, to think positive, or to undercut your competition.

However, in the real world, many of these theoretical

methods of Winning Friends and Influencing People just don’t seem to apply to your business: they’re primarily geared to building profit for publishers and celebrity writers.

A far more effective, tried-and-trusted method of growing any small- to medium-size business is via the oldest marketing method of all – word

of mouth – geared up to the 21st century by a strategic network of like-minded individuals running similar-sized businesses.

BNI (Business Network International) is the world’s largest and most successful business referral network. And the first law of business at BNI is ‘what goes round, comes around’…

BNI members meet weekly to pass each other opportunities for new business, the most cost-effective form of advertising possible. Membership of BNI is like having sales people working for you every day, marketing your product or services. In return, you might recommend the group’s plumber, IT consultant or business copywriter – all committed to a high standard of quality and a strict code of ethics.

In the Welland (Market Harborough) Chapter of BNI, members are already referring hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of business. You can benefit from the services offered by fellow members, while attracting new business to your company as well as theirs..

Eurolanguages

Many people make New Year resolutions, some are kept, but lots of us give up, and soon the resolve at the start of the year is forgotten. Learning a foreign language is a popular resolution, but whilst evening classes is a solution for some, others find the class sizes, inflexible times and the lack of individual attention, a problem. Northampton based Eurolanguages provides language training solutions for both private and corporate learners.

Lessons are available for small groups or on a one-to-one basis and can be arranged on days and at times convenient to you. The high level of individual attention

means that tuition takes place at a rate that suits your abilities and requirements. Lessons can also be tailored to cover specific aspects of a language. Some people only require conversational ability, whilst for others, writing the language is important. At Eurolanguages you can learn French, German, Italian or Spanish. English tuition is also available for foreigners.

Let Eurolanguages help you keep your 2011 New Year resolution!

WOW TAKES A LOOK AT THE LATEST DEALS ON WHEELS

Cool Redefined!

The Honda CR-Z is a low-slung coupé with a healthy respect for the environment. Its Japanese manufacturer has designed and engineered the car for modern, urban living and as the world’s

first sporty hybrid, its stylish looks stand-out from other ‘green’ cars on the market.

Amazingly it also offers true driving thrills thanks to an agile chassis, direct steering,

a low driving position and useful boosts of torque from the petrol-electric drivetrain. You see, it is equipped with Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) which means that the engine

acts like a turbo with the electric motor boosting the 1.5 litre petrol engine, resulting in a combined output of 122bhp.

Behind the wheel, the cockpit looks ultra-modern with

attractive dials and switchgear. Accommodation-wise, the CR-Z has a 2+2 layout, which means that as well as the driver and a front seat passenger, it can carry two short adults or children in the back. There is also 225 litres of luggage space, but without anyone in the back the rear seats can be flattened to increase load-space at the touch of a button.

On the move, it’s definitely most at home in urban environments, burning through the backstreets and nipping in and out of traffic. And because it’s a hybrid it has low exhaust emissions, benefits from cheaper road tax, and – for Londoners – is exempt from the Congestion Charge. When you

drive the CR-Z outside of built-up areas, the drive is comfortable, positive and sprightly. There are three different driving settings; Sport, Normal and Econ. In Sport you can boost the car’s steering weight and responsiveness, while Econ has a gentler acceleration and steering; with Normal the car is, well, normal, like a regular hatchback.

The lithe little Honda has a combined economy of 56.5mpg and CO2 emissions of 117g/km – just behind the Toyota Prius which manages 72.4mpg and 89g/km. That said, the CR-Z will appeal to the style conscious because it is a good looking car with chic technology and a cool ‘green’ image. And if safety

Pure Techno

The all-new S60 is a four-door coupé; sportier and more dis-tinct than any previous Volvo.

But it is not just about looks. The car also delivers real driving enjoyment because the chassis team at the Swedish car maker have fine-tuned the S60 to offer the most dynamic driving char-acteristics ever seen before on one of their cars.

The S60 has crisp steering, decent cornering ability, a well controlled body and excellent brakes. The twin-turbo D5 pow-er-plant, on test here, mated with a six speed manual trans-mission, is punchy - delivering brisk acceleration from low revs, no matter where you are in the gear range. It accelerates from 0-60mph in 7.4 seconds and returns a brilliant average

fuel consumption of 53.3mpg. The new model certainly

manages to combine composure, performance and economy with comfort as well, because inside the Volvo there are first-rate ma-terials and, in SE Lux Premium trim, luxurious leather seats. The car also benefits from standard features including electronic cli-mate control, cruise control, an information centre, remote audio controls, and a leather steering wheel and gear stick. The S60 is practical too, with bags of room in the front and the back, and a boot big enough to gobble up all you could expect to load into a saloon.

Of course, safety is well-woven into Volvo’s DNA and the all-new S60 features the Scan-dinavian company’s ground-

breaking Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake system. The technology consists of a radar unit integrated into the car’s grille, a camera fitted in front of the interior rear-view mirror, and a central control unit. The radar’s task is to de-tect any object in front of the car and to determine the distance to it. The camera’s role is to determine what type of object it is. The full auto brake part of the equipment also responds to vehicles in front of the S60 that are at a standstill or moving in the same direction. In an emer-gency situation, you first receive an audible warning combined with a flashing light in the wind-screen’s head-up display. In or-der to generate an immediate, intuitive reaction, this warning

resembles a brake light. At the same time, the car’s brakes are pre-charged. If you don’t react to the warning and an accident is imminent, full braking power is automatically applied. Pedes-trian Detection with Full Auto Brake can avoid a collision with a pedestrian at speeds of up to 21mph. At higher vehicle speeds, the system’s focus is on reduc-ing the car’s speed as much as possible prior to the impact, with the speed falling by up to 21mph. Awesome technology, or what?

Overall the new Volvo S60 is a well designed, comfortable, classy and good to drive car. The range certainly offers some-thing different from the major German executive saloons and its list prices are a lot lower than those cars too!

Derek Hammond finds traces of a once-huge, disappeared abbey

ere’s a couple of facts you probably didn’t know about Pipewell,

which is now no more than a hamlet a couple of miles off the main Corby-Market Harborough road. For starters, it isn’t pronounced ‘Pipewell’, as you may have had good reason to suspect, but instead ‘Pipwell’. And, up until the 16th century, it was the site of the third largest abbey in England.

The tiny village is set out in a strange pattern, the main road turning at angles around three empty central field adjacent to Pipewell Hall. You can park the car and take a walk on the footpath across the fields, where you’ll find an impressive set of earthwork foundations, a steep-sided pond and a stone pillar with no inscription. From 1143 up until the dissolution of the monasteries in 1539, here stood Pipewell Abbey, run by self-sufficient Cistercian monks for the greater glory of God. There was an infirmary where the monks tended

the local sick, a brewhouse, bakery and granary, kitchens, a warming house, gardens and fishponds.

The monks created watermills on Harper’s Brook, which runs right through the old abbey land – and, even more incredibly, built one of England’s first windmills. You can see the ancient Mill Mound marked on an Ordnance Survey map of the area, together with a mysterious Pond Bay feature.

History books will tell you that nothing above ground has been left of the abbey since 1720, though there are surviving fragments in Great Oakley and Brigstock churches, and a keyhole window in the old manor house at Great Oakley.

However, by approaching the site from the south, it’s actually possible to find the Monk’s Dam, a curving wall structure over 20 feet high, built across the path of the brook. All you need to do first

is pay your family into West Lodge Rural Centre, have your fill of farmyard and pet cuddles, tractor rides, early-year lambing and feeding the

animals, and set off on one of the walks into the woods. Best leave the tearooms until last, for your return from the 13th century…
